Bring it on aid boy.

Step out of those slings and start quaking on 5.7.....

The festival was a farce.

The clinics were silly.
The "star" atheletes were either drunk or self absorbed.

The large companies use these things to undermine smaller retailers. Wonder why Desert Rock Sports was not there?

Because they dont like being f_ck ed the ass by the people that are their distrubutors, I bet.

Were you even there, aid boy?

Were you there?

i spent the weekend free climbing in little cottonwood captain blowhard, and harder than 5.7. i don't much care for big events like the rendezvous either, but instead of acting like an internet superhero out saving the world from commercialism i go climb where others are not. try it sometime - you might like it.

if other people want to have fun at an event like this, just let them without being a dick in yet another thread.

Um, back to RRR, here...

I spent most of the weekend in an epic fog, due to the 19-hour overnight drive to get down there. Highlights I can actually remember:

Getting to meet multitudinous way cool rc.com people -- got to put a lot of faces to names, and got to meet some folks from the site whom I didn't know from online.

Belaying Kelly, who set topropes for Tiffany Campbell's clinic -- Kelly is a looovely climber, and Tiffany is an incredibly cool human being (and her baby is ADORABLE)! This was as close to climbing as I got this weekend, as my knee is still fairly messed up.

Talking to the Petzl rep, who gave me some great ice tool suggestions and also told Ben where he could get custom aiders made in Portland.

Listening to Jim Bridwell's very loud, obscenity-laced tirade aimed at some dude who had bolted a crack. Oh, for a video camera.

NOT getting bitten by The Fury.

Overall -- hanging out with a bunch of climbers from all over the place, and having a damn good time.

k.

Damn, damn, damn! I miss all the fun. Sounds like it was a blast and I really regret missing out on meeting some of you; and of course miss hanging out with the regulars who I've hooked up with elsewhere.

Damn, Alex! You and Hil really know how to have an epic. :P I'll let you borrow my license plate some time.

I had a blast at RRR.

Katydid and I arrived around noon on Friday, was hoping to get some climbing in but my mind was a bit fried from the riddicullus drive we thougth was a great idea. Got to hang with some dot commers for a while.

Kellys folks were great, thank them for there hospitaliy Kell, nothing like letting a gaggle of climbers into your house.

I did the clinic thing on Saturday and had a great time. Met loads of great people from all over the place.

Peter Crofts crack climbing clinic was pretty good, I learned a few things and just generally had a good time. We pretty much just climbed and hung out.

Then the afternoon clinic was upon me. I had signed up for the Advanced Aid clinic with Bryan Mcrae, but to my delight I was the only one who signed up for it, so Bryan and Bridwell were doing there clinics together and to top it off R.C. coms own Ammon was a specail guest instructor!.

Wahat a blast , chain smoking with Bridwell and Bryan and listening to Bridwell go off on random rants abot everything from cordalettes to wire gate biners. There were only 4 people in the clinic, the others signed up for the basic aid clinic. So Bryan looks at me and say's "you're the only one who signed up for the advanced class, what do you want to know." that was pretty cool, I wanted to just say Teach me everything!.

needless to say I learned alot. and had a great time to boot.

the rest of the weekend was spent hanging out and drinking, which is what climbers do when they're not climbing.

I enjoyed meeting everbody and can't wait to meet again.

Art we definitely have a date for J tree.

Here's the directions copied directly from mapquest. With as many turns as they had us making I'm amazed we got there at all!

In reply to:
Merge onto I-10 W via the ramp- on the left- toward PHOENIX. 108.8 miles Map

5: Merge onto I-17 N via exit number 150A toward FLAGSTAFF. 7.7 miles Map

6: Take the exit- exit number 201- toward US-60/THOMAS RD/GRAND AVE. 0.1 miles Map

7: Stay straight to go onto N BLACK CANYON HWY. 0.1 miles Map

8: Turn LEFT onto W THOMAS RD. 0.2 miles Map

9: Turn RIGHT onto N 27TH AVE. 0.2 miles Map

10: Merge onto US-60 W via the ramp- on the left. 49.9 miles Map

11: Turn RIGHT onto N TEGNER ST/US-93/US-89. Continue to follow US-93 N. 129.5 miles Map

12: Take the US-93/BEALE ST exit- exit number 48- toward AZ-66/LAS VEGAS/AZ-68. 0.3 miles Map

13: Turn RIGHT onto W BEALE ST/US-93 N. Continue to follow US-93 N. 103.2 miles Map

14: Take the LAS VEGAS BLVD exit- exit number 75- toward DOWNTOWN LV. 0.3 miles Map

15: Turn RIGHT onto N LAS VEGAS BLVD/NV-604. <0.1 miles Map

16: Turn RIGHT onto E BONANZA RD. <0.1 miles Map

17: End at Las Vegas NV Map

Getting to Vegas from Tucson is really not that complicated. There's about 10 extra streets that mapquest threw in there for god only knows why.

That's not the record on Olive Oil but awesome job anyway. I actually don't know what the record is but I've done it faster, though I was soloing. And while I was jogging I wasn't urgently trying to climb fast. Bill's site is missing, umm, quite a bit to say the least. I know of a bunch of faster ascents than he's claiming over the last couple of weeks alone, and I'm not even in the loop anymore.

Hmmm,
Why not update Bill's site then?
Bill's site may be lacking in exact info...but that's because people don't report stuff.
Which I have no problem with. UNLESS!! They post something like this, Reason? Make a decision, say something or don't!!

A solo record is different from a team record.
It's much easier to move fast without a rope.
So what is the team record on Olive Oil?
And truthfully I don't care if we set the record or not, cause it sure was fun!

Thanks for the kind words though!

josh

I just saw this post, that's AWESOME!! I had emailed Bill with our slow Olive Oil time (4 hr CTC) because I was wondering what sorts of FAST times he had heard of. Because he didn't know, he posted our time. Yuko and I walked the approach and descent, and hung out on the top for a while. It was our first time ever simul-climbing and we were just shocked at how fun and easy--and, in my opinion, safe--it could be (we were using tiblocs to protect a second fall). I'm really psyched that having a time posted helped motivate someone else to fly up the route!

I was in Red Rocks last week but unfortunately I left on Friday right before the rendezvous (doh!) However I did get in another fun simul-climb ascent of Johnny Vegas/Solar Slab with my friend Merrick, and climbed the Cloud Tower route with Loren who I met during the week.

Cloud Tower is amazing, although it requires a lot of gear--we brought basically 3 sets of cams through #3.5 camalot, and we used almost all of it during the climb!

i was hiking to the parking lot of the 2nd pullout when the helicopter was taking off from the loop road for the last time and got a couple of details.

somebody got dropped on lead by his belayer on 'fear and loathing.' rumors involved the words 'gri-gri' and 'operator error,' though i wasn't able to get anything more than that, and those at the scene didn't give out much, but seemed to think that the climber was going to be ok, eventually.
he did get helicoptered out from the WoC area (those search and rescue helicopter pilots are UNBELIEVABLE to land something in there) and was in the hospital that evening at least.

We saw the astonishing pilot work up close -- my partner was leading A Day in the Life when the first flight came in, not much more than 100 feet to our left, with rotors barely clearing the sandstone walls all around. Until that moment, the Gallery crowd didn't know there was an emergency going on next door. Rescue personnel were shuttled up to the fallen leader, whose rope was still clipped through the first 9 draws (but not the anchor) of Fear and Loathing.

I saw nothing about it in the papers next day, and just hope that he is indeed going to be OK.

From what I understand the guy got to the top of fear and loathing and he thought it would be cool to pull up a bunch of slack and jump off backwards instead of lowering down. He then hit the rock behind him and broke his back or something. My friends had been in the area all day and this guy had worked Fear and Loathing on my friends quickdraws earlier in the day but said he would come back later to try it again.

I want to say "hi" to all I met at the RRR. I hope you all got back to your homes OK. Some of you drove a long way just to be there for the event. I thought the event was OK but didn't really live up to what I "thought"(big mistake right there) it was going to be. At 7:30pm on Fri. everyone was already gone and the food had already run out. Sat night was a better showing but a friend of mine, looking forward to the boulder comp, said it was lame. I did get to toss you a donation($) and grabbed some stickers. I guess the highlight was meeting you all and seeing some of you finaly meet Dr Kodos. I even heard one person say he missed his calling as a stand-up comedian. He was an entertaining socialite at the RC.com table for at least a few hours on Sat night. I didn't see anyone wanting to get away. The talk was of climbing, the trips people take, and more climbing in the future. Partners were met and plans were made. I didn't stay for the slide show but heard it was good. I have seen some of his slides in the past and have always enjoied them. I was more into getting out at 5am to climb.
Again it was really kool to meet some of you.

Flamer.....great job on all the climbing you did.....including the fast stuff.

Tracy's dog was cute and very well behaved.....good things in a dog.

Lets all get out and climb next time!
