Anyone up for Chuting on Berthoud Pass for Saturday. Vince, those second creek chutes will be looking pretty ripe. We should go get 'em! 8^)

Sounds good, some pretty decent looking lines through there. I'll check back with Sharpie and see if he wants to go.

Gary, you still out there? I wasn't able to get in contact with you Fri. so I made alt plans and soloed/skied Mt. Democrat on the East face above Kite lake. :D

Are you still planing on skiing Shavano this weekend? Interest seems to be dwindling.

Sorry Vince, My pods came into town earlier than expected and I ended up entertaining them on Saturday. Shavano is still a plan. Partly cloudy and 61 degrees forecasted for Saturday in Salida. Do you know what Campground we want to stay at? I was thinking of going down in the early afternoon on Friday and setting up camp etc. I would also like to go nab that chute behind Peck at Monarch on Sunday. I could do it Friday if someone has that day off.

Ok the new job got me tied up for awhile, but I finally got some pics downloaded and ready to go.
Shavano was quite a day on the 23rd. Since we drove in at night we didn't know what the Angel currently looked like. We thought this was it.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_001.jpg
So making our way up we tried to climb the right ridge. It turned out to be a nightmare. Lots of trees to grab your boards, loose rocks etc. No skinning which really sucked cause my skins are heavy and I boot packed them all the way up with everything else. Didn't need the things all day. Here I am suffering on the way up.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_006.jpg
Then we came to a bench where we took a break and saw the real angel.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_011.jpg
Then again the weather was perfect hardly a breeze and nice and warm. We took in some lunch and enjoyed the view from 2000 ft higher than where we started.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_012.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_014.jpg
Our cars are down here somewhere.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_015.jpg
Here is another look at the Angel, you can also see the"Grinch" of Shavano, and our friend Billy that Bucky tried to catch a little later.

Vince and John topping a ridge
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_024.jpg
Steve catching his breath.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_020.jpg
Since we took the long way we missed our opportunity to summit, so we had to settle for doing the Angel Couloir. Here is a look from the top of the right arm of the Angel.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_026.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/...avano4-23-05_028.jpg
The snow was perfectly corned so down we went.

and Myself

At the bottom everything turned to mush and it was a pain in the ass getting out of there. Still after 4000 feet of climbing and just under 3000 feet on the descent, it was more than worth the effort.
8^)

Again, nice job with the pics. We would have had more if I would have pressed the right button. ...The weather was beautiful and the skiing was really good. I can reccomend this trip as long as you find the right trail head, like Gary said the hike in was tough! Should be the right conditions soon to do another one.

WOW, I can't get enough of this stuff. :D :D :D

Make sure you get the right trail to the Couloir for one. I would say plan on 6 hours to make the summit. It should take a lot less, somewhere in the 4-5 hour range, but it is really easy to get off route on this one. It would've really helped if one of us had done this before. There was another group of skiers doing the Angel also. They left before us and got just as lost. We actually topped out on the Couloir ahead of them as they ended up climbing the same ridge we did but not as directly.

Well this past weekend April30-May1 was one of the worst of the season. At least for those who want sunshine and dry weather to climb. For us backcountry addicts it was arguably the best two days of the year.
Wannabe and I got started around 9am on Berthoud pass. We decided to do the choke. There was a lot of fresh snow, a foot plus, but not well bonded to the icy bed underneath. I did the choke going as fast as I could on my arse, Wannabe lost his ski. You can see from the sluffs we knocked off that we should have waited till later in the day or better yet for another day.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...thoudApril30_003.jpg
So after Wannabe found his ski (30+ minutes of searching) we put our tails between our legs and decided to head up the West side up to Russell hoping that the wide chutes up there had better consolidated snow. On the way up we ran into Pdiddy, Brian, and his dog Lucy. So we teamed up and started hiking up Russell. The snow really started to set in at this time.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...thoudApril30_006.jpg
Then we got into the sickness. It would have been much easier to breathe if we had snorkels.

Pdiddy

Brian and Lucy

We then went for the Second Creek Chute and we got to do it, but the snow really started pounding so it all pretty much looked like this.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...thoudApril30_030.jpg
Yes there is a chute in there somewhere.
Pdiddy was quite happy after that run.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...thoudApril30_039.jpg
The next day the clouds lifted a bit and visibility was much better. We did the same circuit since it was so good the day before.
Cody was focused on top of Russell.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...April30-May1_040.jpg
Steve had fun
http://i2.photobucket.com/...April30-May1_042.jpg
John and Bella loved it.
http://i2.photobucket.com/...April30-May1_045.jpg
and then we went over to Second creek to do the chute again. At least this time we could see. I thought it was pretty good.

Mid winter conditions in May. Excellent! 8^)

With all this talk of ice going on, I just started thinking about how I can't wait for some of the fluffy stuff to fall. I am sure the usual suspects are in for this season. For anyone who like to ski/ride BC and looking for partners in the Front Range. This is a good place to start. All the ski sales hit next weekend. I am ready for some POW!

Theres been a bit of talk about mentoring newbees. Well here I am. Looking for a partner to get out on the upcoming snow but my experience is mostly WA ski areas with a little back country. I'm knowledgable of snow travel and avalance rescue but need someone who knows the local terrain and risks. In colorado springs but am up for a drive for a good weekend in the alpine.

blakej, just watch the thread as more snow comes down. You can jump in with the crew, you will need the basic beacon, shovel, probe and sumptin to put it in.

And if you need to get the basics you'll probaby find the best deals at Patroller Supply for beacons and other snow safety equipment.
The BC season is just around the corner. I am feeling it. Get your crap sticks ready, cause the best mud and rock riding of the year is coming up.
