Treat with great suspicion, the advice of people who have 'never been there.'

Agreed for any destination. There seemed to be some confusion regarding the actual YNP regulations. That's easy enough to clarify, and all I have to offer.

I'd add that a public forum is not the location where you're going to see many broadcasts for creative solutions, and rightly so.

Go to supertopo.com................ from the sounds of it you wont last more than a week. ya know if every climber who wanted to stay there for a summer did............. the valley would be even more miserably f-ing crowded and all the respectable climbers would not come off the walls to join the masses. The valley is CROWDED. Great F-ing crowded. So many tourons, of course rangers have to regulate camping, and it would not make sense not to discriminate against dirtbag climbers. If your going to be 18 get a job at DNC the concessionair if not, then maybe sometime in the future.

be low key, the rangers are not impressed by loud and obnoxious crag rats.....

climb in the shade as much as possible in the summer, too hot on the slabs around noon...visit the meadows here and there.....hit the east side when you're bored

learn self rescue from books or john dill of YOSAR

be safe

If you are planning on a long stay, try to keep a low profile. If you have to deal with any park employees, be respectful and polite.

I don't know, Ian! I was just poking fun at you. You could be rich!

I have never been to the valley (someday?) so i consider you lucky! With that said, I heard that if you are on route you can stay for a while (hopefully someone will confirm). I also heard that you can't camp at the base of a climb, but I think the loophole is if you have a ledge you can put it on the wall 5 feet off the ground and get around the rule.

Best of luck!

Brent

don't listen to this douche bag, it's a good way to get your shit destroyed, along with your name. if your on a wall, you are exempt from the camping limitations. as soon as you get off a wall, your back on the limitations. the limit is 14 days per year in the valley, these must be split between two different camp sites (i.e. you cant spend all 14 days in camp 4). i wouldnt stay any longer, the consequences are grim if you get caught.

also, 2 sets of cams is enough, i climbed there for an entire summer with a set of nuts, c4's (.4-4) and a set of aliens blue-yellow. no problems at all, just run it out a bit. oh yeah, and working for the park fucking sucks. if you wanna climb there DONT work there, they work you like a dog and you get shit for it.

First off I spent three of the last four summers in Yosemite and here is my advice. It is not all legal, but it has worked for many in the past.

1. Take turns putting up one tent with a few other climbers. You guys will pay five dollars each day and you all have a place to keep your stuff, plus a bear box. Big tents are best. When your week is up have one of the others register it and so on. Ocassionally switch tents if you have two.

2. Keep a LOW profile. Never party at your campsite. Don't hang around camp4 during the day. Don't camp out of bounds around camp four.

3. Meet DNC emploees. Some of them climb and you might want to party in employee housing, plus they will maybe let you use the showers.

4. Showers (Curry Village) are free to cabin guests, just walk into the shower house and they won't ever ask you to pay, they assume you are a guest.

5. Free ice at curry village on the deck of big wooden cabins, near curry boulders.

6. Elephant rock has a great beach and good swimming.

ps- One set of cams is fine, your partner should have one too. If you try a wall do south face of Washington's column first and sleep on dinner ledge.

feel free to pm me if you need more help.

Oh boy, too true...

Yes, definately keep a low profile. Not looking like a 'dirtbag' really helps.

If you're a "gal," a stun gun ain't gona get it. Better bring a blunderbus or a mini-gun. Or just bring your dad, in which case you won't last a day once pops sees who is prowling around those boulders . . .

Try to get a job in the valley as a lifeguard (you need to be certified by redcross I think) cause it gets super hot from the end of June to the mid of August. Make friends with employees if your not going to work there, they let me sleep on their floors for two months last summer, and gave me free pizza and burgers. try to get a fake ID from someone you know so you can buy beer (sell cans for beer money). Keep a very clean cut look Rangers really do hate the climbers. You can easily live out of the bear boxes adjacent to BoysTown (my friend and I had a full block of em, which is Eight boxes).

two Sets of cams and two sets of nuts will do you fine, just make sure you have up to #4 Camalots.

I am proud to say that last summer i made $400 off recycling. It was hard not too when you know the recycling people and the guests where i work kept giving me their empties.

Meet the right Dnc employees and theyll hook you up amap, provided you are not a mooch who steals peoples showers and beer (like iltripp)

i don't claim to have ever been to the valley but i've heard a bike is mighty useful for getting around the park. i was also told the story by a guy I went on a bouldering trip with about how he an his buddies were chased by the cops for riding drunk at night without lights, i think one of them got caught

WOW. I can't believe I forgot to mention a bike. It really is a must. Don't bring a ccar if possible get a ride, new parking regulations make it really hard. The bus works pretty good, but the fasted way around is a bike. Any bike will work, but bring a long chain lock, not a U stem lock. You will be locking up to trees quite often. A bike is as important as a rack.
