hi, guys: I come from the east, have never been on a climbing trip to CA. I am so excited to go to LA next week. any suggestion for sport climbing in CA, I am wondering if there are many choices of sport climbing in Yosemite. since the weather is so hot, where do you guys think I should go --some local crags around LA or those world famous national parks. I do need some advices for my very expensive vacation --only a week :( thanks Robert

Head up towards Big Bear Lake, in the San Bernardino Nat. Forest. You have Keller Peak and Holcomb Valley and many other smaller crags. Nice apline settings, if they haven't been scorched by fires. CLoser to LA you could boulder at Horse Flats, also up in the mountains.

It's been pretty darn hot here. Near LA, Holcomb Valley/Big Bear area is probably your best bet for sport. Locally- I've been climbing at Malibu Creek in the late afternoons, and it's bearable in the shade. Cooler weather in the Sierras. Mammoth has plenty of sport climbing. Less than 5 hrs from LA. You will definitely need some trad gear if you want to climb at Yosemite or Tuolumne.

Courtwright Reservoir in the Western Sierras is pretty nice right now. Hasn't topped low 80's, even through this crazy heat wave. It rains a little in the late afternoons, but you can get tons of climbing in before that. There are tons of bolted routes all over the reservoir.

Unfortunately, you picked the absolute worst time of year to come here for sport climbing. I would say Tuolumne, but even Tuolumne at 9000-10000 feet is too hot in the sun - I played that game for many summers in the Meadows. Tahoe area is limited for sport, but WAY better than Holcomb/Big Bear/Keller Peak (except it's 10 hours north of LA - Cali is pretty big), and is pretty much guaranteed not to be too hot to climb. Donner Summit is super good because it's always cool and you can set up top ropes on just about everything, so you can climb tons with no trad gear. I'd head up 395 for Tahoe if I was you.

unfortunately, everyone is right that it is really hot. But I am an LA native so I do climb out here in the summer. It's definately doable so don't worry too much, just bring lots of water and a hat. My recommendations for good spots in LA area are echo cliffs (once you get down to the crag there's lots of shade to be found, but the approach is sort of unpleasant), rivershide rock quarry, or if you can go up to big bear and do pinnacles/ holcomb valley. It's a higher elevation so it should be a little cooler and there's a lake to take a dip in. Taquitz and Suicide are also good this time of year, but it's all trad. When are you comming out? Hope you have a good trip!
