Hi everyone!
I'm Rachel from Kentucky. I'm a college student in engineering and soon to be a barista at Starbucks (hopefully). I have a husband and two dogs - a great dane and an english mastiff.
I've done a lot of camping in Red River Gorge, and I always see signs about rock climbing and all the gear for sale at Miguel's. I've had an itch to climb for years, and this year I'm gonna do it! I'm starting out at a gym here in town, and then I'll need a partner... I'll figure out the details as I go.
I'm excited to be here! :D

Never do ANYTHING that ANYONE tells you to do on this website. Always do the opposite. Majid, I can't believe you didn't repost her pictures with green and red arrows all over them.

Hey! You guys are both from Cali. I reeeaaallly want to move out there. I've had this dream since I was about 10 that I would move out there and learn to surf. Is it as awesome as I've always imagined?
I'll say, I love love love Colorado and Utah (Moab and Arches <3), so if it's as amazing as either of those, you have to tell me.
And please don't tell me it's expensive. I know. I don't care. I'll live in a shack if I can just have a palm tree in my yard :D

Do not waist your time in Sothern CA. Climbers over there got nothing more 200 feet ( assuming the biggest boulder in JT is 200 feet tall).

You need to come up north where everything starts big.

That's cool. I was actually thinking more seriously about northern cali anyway, as far as settling down with a home. I've got plenty of time before I finish school, though, unless I go out there to get my master's. I don't see how I would get into any of the schools you guys have out there, tho. They're tough, huh?

So there are some pretty amazing climbs in northern CA?

yaa, come up north where all the real climber live and hang out. Down in south, all you get is bunch of ex-surfers and ex- skateboarders who got tired of dealing their sports and ended up becoming climbing rats.

Northern CA is where the heavy duty climbers live and climb. I am glade that lord (whatever) did not created Yosemite next to Santa Monica. So Rachel, remember; Sothern CA is for surfing and Northern CA is for climbing.

Yeah, I was kinda starting to wonder... the only other board I ever use is the-brights.net, which is philisophical and strict, so I guess I kinda came across as a little niave at first.
I'm serious about the rock climbing, though, and I'm still really excited. I'll just have to watch out for the crazy guys here it looks like... Cool

I don't think "barista" and "starbucks" can be used in the same sentence.

When you push a button and coffee comes out the other side, that is a vending machine and you should have to pay $5 for a Large.

If you grind 7gm for a single, 13 gm for a double, tamp, pull a drippy 25 sec shot and mix with 160 degree micro foam; you can be a barista, but I have never seen this at Starbucks.

Starbucks is like McDonalds, SUCKS! (oh, you don't work at McDonalds do you?)

Good grief. Someone's uber defensive about their job. Got your ego all tied up in your work, jermanimal? Wink Why are you on this site anyway? It says you've run your mouth -er, posted- 107 times, but I don't see a single thing on your profile showing you've climbed so much as a pebble. What's the deal? lol

Pot, this is Kettle. Play nice.

What you may or may not put into your profile has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you do or do not climb.

What I find entertaining about you thus far, is that within your profile you state that you are an Engineering student, yet are super excited to make me coffee in the morning. Sounds like you have strong goals and aspirations. Why not strive to land an internship and get some experience in your chosen field of work instead of being an aspiring coffee brewer. Barista - a fancy word for "I work here."

This is an interesting statement, completely inaccurate, but interesting none the less.

I have to do three internships as a required part of my degree, where the average student here makes $12,000 a semester (~4 months). I'm planning one for next summer, the semester when I get the least amount of financial aid. So I'm not worried about that, smarty pants. The coffee shop is for some pocket change so I can do more travelling. Student loans pay the bills, but it doesn't leave much else. I haven't been out west in two years. Frown Plus Starbucks is really close -one mile from my house, 1/2 mi from campus - so I can walk there and not waste gas.

What do you do for a living?

Rachel,

Dont concern yourself to heavily with the West Coast. If you're living next to the Red River Gorge, that'll keep you busy for a long time.
That is, if you're really interested in climbing.

Yeah, I'm just bored with Kentucky. I feel like I've seen it all. You're right, climbing will keep me busy for a while, and yes, I am serious. I've just been having trouble getting started. I can't seem to talk anyone I know into climbing with me. Everyone's afraid of heights! wtf? lol. That's the fun of it.

I tried researching different ways to go solo, but it just doesn't sound safe or wise at this point. I know you guys make fun of people who do the indoor gym thing, but hopefully that way I can meet some people who do outdoors, too, and I can team up with some new friends. I don't know how else to get rolling with this.

Anyway, yeah RRG is cool, I just love the landscape of the west and the west coast more. They're just two totally different things.
