I'm heading to North Conway in a couple of days. Can you all recommend your preferred campgrounds in town? Preferably in/close to town and stumbling distance from some bars. Speaking of which, what are your favorite bars in town?

I am also looking for beta on where to stay in North Conway.

Did a quick search on this site and people mentioned Lafayette campground - which is right next to Cannon. Pretty step at 24 bucks a night though.

here is the reservation site: http://nhparks.state.nh.us/...afayette-campground/

Anyone got any other beta? Better place to stay? Small cabin rental?

Thanks.

Yea, stealth camping around cathedral is a terrible idea.

there are no national forests around north conway, and certainly no forest service roads

the only people i know who've been able to camp and climb in north conway were those who put a lot of research time on the internet and didn't waste their time driving around, looking at maps, or asking locals.

The camping in N. Conway sucks, unless you drive an RV. You can stay on a campground on the Kancamagus Highway for cheap.

There's also the Conway Hostel:
http://www.conwayhostel.com/

or the Maple Leaf Motel:
http://www.mapleleafinnconway.com/

Or the Cranmore Mountain Lodge bunkroom that will feed you breakfast:

Lafayette is a long way from NoCo. See Wonderwoman's notes for places to stay. There is federal land around Cathedral, but you've gotta know where it is to successfully crash there, and it's tough to give those directions accurately over the internet (that and I don't want the rangers to start looking there just in case I'm wrong. Cool).

Gears have shifted a little and i"m probably going to focus my energy at Cannon Cliff. Any beta on places to stay other than Layfette? for Cannon Cliff?

Also, looks like Saturday may rain. Does North Conway offer better shelter from the rain? Spent a rainy day at Cannon and hoping not to repeat it.

Thanks.

Sundown Ledge off the Kanc is the best place to stay out of the rain. It's hard, all trad, and dry.

The last time I was in North Conway, I could have sworn I saw people camping (tents) at the base of Cathedral Ledge. Were they doing so illegally?

Also, Flatbread Co has amazing pizza and a decent beer selection.

oh that looks good.... might have to check that out.

So where can I get a guide? Is there a gearshop close to North Conway? Is there an online guide somewhere? I didn't seen any topos on the RC database.

Thanks.

I remember there being both EMS and IME (across the street from each other) in North Conway on the main road out towards Whitehorse/Cathedral. They both carried large selections in gear. Probably a good place to look for a guide.

This is the best guide and you can pick it up at the N. Conway IME or EMS.

EMS Moved to strip mall land. It's on route 16 on the way into N. Conway in the 'putters green' strip mall.

Best food in town, and possibly all of new england is Chef's Market. the moat and flatbread are good too. But if you havent tried it, check out CM...chef Brian is an amazing cook and almost everything is made from scratch. SUPER GOOD.

EMS is on the southern part of town, on your left after the McDs...IME is across from the big white Eastern Slope Inn at the end of town. Dont forget Wild Things.

Easier stuff on White Horse dry pretty quick after a shower too.

If you're looking to hit Cannon and North Conway, camp on the Kanc. There are at least 6 campsites to choose from, the best being Covered Bridge because it is on the approach to Sundown if things get wet. It's like $8 pp/per night. From there, you'll be 45 min from Cannon and 30 from N. Conway. Shannon Door in Jackson is a good pub. Definitely do not camp at Cathedral. If you have to be right there, camp off the Moat Mountain Trail that leads away from and behind the ledges. It's National Forest land, so it's legal to camp there provided you're outside of Echo Lake State Park and 200 feet off the trail. Not recommended though.

Russell Pond Campground is south of Franconia Parkway (the section of I-93 that runs through the Notch) (maybe exit 27)? I think it's first-come-first-serve, but I'm not sure. I also think it is about $10 per night and has showers. I've also heard it is fairly large.

There is free camping north of the Parkway, but I forget what exit that is. Also, those sites go very quickly, as they are free.

As for Cannon and weather: be aware! Cannon is east facing and is known for bad weather epics. You simply can't see the bad weather coming until it is on top of you, and descents often require leaving gear or rapping off spires / chockstones. It also has some exposed sections that could attract lightning. Still, it has very good climbing.

If you're looking for some more info (particularly two weather related posts): my Cannon posts are here.
