This from the 'Vertical Times'... Quote: e. Study on climber abilities to assess the difficulty of novel routes, MN. $1,200 to Hamline University to survey climbers' abilities to estimate route difficulty. Photographs will be shown to climbers who will then determine the grade of the routes shown. Supplementary data on age, sex, and experience levels will also be gathered. The resulting data will help land managers and climbing advocacy groups more accurately determine the ecological impacts of climbers on cliff systems based on predictions of route choice. Researcher and climber, Dr Mike Farris, who has previously published in science journals on climbing and vegetation issues, will carry out the project. The total project budget is $4,000. For the whole edition... http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=3732&forum=23&1 As stated, "The resulting data will help land managers and climbing advocacy groups more accurately determine the ecological impacts of climbers on cliff systems based on predictions of route choice." I don't feel it's a waste of my money, I donate. Is it a waste of your money 'push'??? Do you donate anything like money, time, or work ??? Or do you just take ??? rrrADAM [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2001-10-29 18:13 ]

Do you think it's still a waste of money ??? This is what happens when people jump to conclusions without all the information. rrrADAM

Thanks for the full info, Adam. "Nunya" (push): would it be better to have no advocacy group at all? If you disagree with how funds are spent, first: get all the facts straight. Second: exercise your voice and vote within the Access Fund, inasmuch as one would hope that you are genuinely concerned enough to be a member. It doesn't do anyone any good to get only part of the story out there. That's kind of like today's media mentality: "get it first" instead of "get it right".

I think that the money is well spent. The data that will be gathered will help the land managera a lot, in my opinion anyway. One other thing that I must add is that if I ever saw a report that the access fund was using funds in an unresponsible way I would first have to disbelieve it. Because of all that they have done I think that we should give them the benifit of the doubt if there is ever a question. Michael

We just had a clean-up at some local boulders in allentown. The accass fund guy was supposed to be there and didnt show up. There was not a call not anything just a no show. Iv seen several cases where access fund intervention has resulted in less access/quality for climbers and im beginning to think the access fund is really a scam for some climbing lawyers to have a climbing related job. I wish I had something better to say about them but I dont see it.
