Thanks so much for dropping this large biopic into this thread. Fills an awful lot of gaps for many of us. Glad to hear the insight that the climbing community has such a tight knit about itself such that word of a climber going missing can spread so quickly. All the best for your future.

Jane, Thank you for taking the time to type up that post. Your quote about "a good end to a sad story or a sad end to a good story" really caught me. I think it contains a little of both most likely. My condolences to you, your family, his friends, and all who knew him. d.

Thanks for letting us know. I met John when I was climbing full-time. He's the only professional gambler I ever met and he was a wonderful person to climb with. Prayers are with you, Eman

THERE IS A CHANGE FROM THE "DISAPPEARANCE THOUGHTS" I SENT YOU: JOHN DID NOT TAKE A MOUNTAINEERING CLASS FROM DICK POWNALL, INSTEAD HE WAS SPENDING TIME WITH HIM IN THE PRINCIPALS OFFICE WITH, MR. POWNALL, WHEN HE WAS IN TROUBLE IN HIGH SCHOOL!! I called Richard Pownall (73), our Lakewood High School teacher/counselor who climbed the American Expedition of Mt Everest in 1963. He said that thinks he remembers me and John. I told him he probably he did not remember me as I did not get in any trouble in school, but he would remember John. Mr. Pownall was the Lakewood High School Boys Counselor. As we talked, I realized that their connection was not afterschool mountaineering class but during school counseling sessions as John had a tendency to skip school to go climbing. John often felt the need to take a personal outing to the mountains on school days, usually going to Eldorado Canyon to do some climbing. He would tell me that Mr. Pownall would talk to him about rock climbing and he very much enjoyed their talks. He told me that Mr. Pownall's discussions were based on one detail to remember: safety, safety, safety. John was very methodical and most always had a Plan B. Mr. Pownall was my PE teacher at Creighton Junior High School and I just recall we ran all the time, as he thought we should be in good shape and so he could stay in good shape for his next climb. Mr. Pownall is very interested in reading about John. He did recall visits with John in his office to discuss his personal outings from school rather than attending classes. (I did do a quick previous google search on Richard Pownall and saw that he did many climbs in the Tetons over 50 years ago.... very interesting). We had a nice chat from his home in Vail yesterday. Mr. Pownall had a huge impact on John.

Jane, Thanks for posting. I suppose there will always be a few unanswered questions surrounding John's death but I am very glad that, after five years, there is also some closure for you. Curt

Just a very minor comment about Dick Pownall. I suspect he is closer to 83 than to 73 (my age) - I remember him from the Tetons in the 1950s, and I believe he served in the mountain division in WWII.

In reply to: John N Rosholt, Jr (father with a few of his abstracts) http://gsabulletin.gsapubs.org/content/97/12/1422.abstract http://www.sciencemag.org/content/167/3918/463.abstract http://www.sciencemag.org/content/167/3918/461.abstract http://bulletin.geoscienceworld.org/cgi/content/abstract/77/9/987 http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lsc1971/pdf/1038.pdf Entirely by chance, I came across this article in Wired about a wonderful little back-and-forth in the Journal of Geology, with first author being one John N. Rosholt. Thought it might be worth sharing here.

jane my deepest condolenses. i knew john when he lived in gunnison in the early 80's. we were roommates above the deli on main street. i can remember john fleecing us at poker even then. john and i also did a road trip to joshua tree. we hitched from gunnison to jtree. had a great time climbing together. it was many years later i ran into john again. this time in red rocks. he led me up prince of darkness and a few other routes which were way too hard for me. i have often thought of john over the years and wondered how he was getting along. i had not heard he had gone missing. it was with great sadness i read that he had been found. i feel your loss. les lloyd |
