I’ve been working on spinning a 180. The only thing I’ve been able to accomplished trying has been canning myself, landing on my head, and spanking myself.

Do any of you have tricks that you can do or are working on?

After you learn to walk with confidence..... then you graduate to tricks (although I've seen people doing amazing tricks that couldn't walk a 20 foot line).

I recommend learning to be solid first. That way you have a good background experience and will reduce the chances of injury.

I've stuck the 180. I was close to the 360, but got injured early this season. I like the stepping-bounce-jump that Dean taught me this year. You can get into a rythom and bounce down the entire line, catching air.

Swinging, bouncing, turning in the apex of a huge bounce. There's this trick called the hill-billy. You swing the line back and forth so far your body almost gets horizontal.

I saw Cedar do a summersault once. There's Noah Kaufman's amazing dismount. A back flip to the ground. Done most affectively off a higher (eight feet from the ground) line.

I saw a ranger come blasting up to a line once. Dean P. was walking... I don't think the horse could see the line. Just some crazy guy floating in the path. The horse got up on his hind legs. It was kinda like the Lone Ranger does it. Except the horses feet were inches from Dean's face. He kept it together and stayed on the line. I don't know why I told that story.....It was really wierd, though.

Tricks are great fun.... but remember your totally opening yourself up to a brutal lesson, if you don't stick it.

While not nearly as impressive, there are always the old standards to try as well:

I've -
Slacklined Blindfolded
Juggled on the line
Played guitar while swing walking
Performed running mounts - set your line up closer to the ground and jump on, hands free.

I've been trying to nail a backwards summersault, no go.

I've attempted a two man pass. Two people on the same line walk from opposite ends. Join hands. Counterbalance and pass eachother. Walk away backwards. I've gotten close, but I don't have a hotshot slackline buddy since my friend Scott Balcom left town. (I have done this on a stationary railing, however).

I've been spotted in a handstand. But never found the groove.

I can walk and turn till I get boared... Starting to walk backwards, about 30%-50% succesfull, and I can pull up and mount the line from laying down underneath but not touching the ground once I lift off, I can pull this off about 50% of the time and start to walk it.

No running or jump mounts for me... I have a bad knee, and don't want to go through the "leaning curve".

I bounce on the line, but not looking for air, or a 180... Again, don't want my knee to experience the "learning curve".


I have walked the line while playing Bop-It though. Hee hee... Twist it, flick it, walk it.

Hi Ammon,

Thanks for the kind greeting! I've been reading over your posts the last few days, and I gotta say, Bro... the slackline community is in good hands. You've been giving some rock solid advice. It's totally cool of RC.com to host the catagory. I dig Matt's enthusiam for the sport as well.

Yes, I'm looking forward to cruising to the Outdoor Retailer Trade Show. It will be fun meeting you in person. I know too that Slackline Bros. is making a big push with their booth and slackline kit. I hope it goes big for them. Ric has really poured his heart and finances into it.

P.S. Being that I'm supposed to be talkin' tricks here. This is subtle, but when riding the line (drawing ovals with your feet), a cool dismount is a 360 degree perpendicular spin - Spring off of the opposite side that you want to dismount from. Begin twisting as you begin to bounce up and over the top of the oval. As your feet reach the outer boundry on the opposite side, keep your head out of the centerline and spin like a ballerina (without the tu tu of course, and no your hands don't need to be over your head).

Try some of those adiddas jogging pants with the snaps up the side. That should do the trick.

OK... At J-Tree over New Year's I perfected staying on the line while playing Bop-It... Can't walk, but can just stand there with one foot and play.

i have a few new tricks from the winter...

"perpetual spin"-simply a 180, but don't stop after success, but continue to spin. I have successfully completed 7 entire rotations without pausing.

"sit and spin"-while riding the line "surf" style, with feet perpindicular to the line; sit down on your butt, then kick one foot out and turn, now prepared for one legged stand mount.

"jump kick mount"-simply run and kick off the tree yur anchor is attached to and land on the line. Different variations can be explored including a 180 after kicking off the tree, and turning midair to land on the line backwards. I have succeeded at all the variations I have tried except for the 180.

Sounds like that "work at home" thing is paying off....or at least "slacking off".

Glad to hear about all of the above adding creativity to slackline!

My new thing (new for me anyhoooo).....
First I set up my line soooo loose...that you can simply unclip it when its not weighted ( no tensioning system at all). Then I just go for time and style...not really any specific hard new tricks, but as many variations and types of moves as I can do before I take a whipper. Super fun and feels like riding powder or the big waves!

yoga poses: The Tree and the Triangle are two I find very challenging to hold for any length of time and are very committing. I do Bikram's version of the tree, which is harder than most.

I saw a buddy of mine do that trick. He started off hanging from the slackline and prest-o, change-o he was standing on it

Wow! i didn't even know this thing had taken off in the states. I'm in Korea at the moment and this place seems to be pretty much where it all began. Traditional art from 1300 years ago or something.... these guys are amazing and can do it all. To date I've seen mantle mounts, running (formards and backwards), walking, summersaults, high jumps, spinning, kicking and fighting. They use a bit of a different line though, it seems to flex a lot more so you can get launched off it if you want. One of the funky things they do is sort of walk, jump, land on their ass on the line and then spring back up and land on their feet. Picture it as all happening in one smooth motion like on a rubber band. Walking on knees and on ankles are popular too. I'm not much for doin tricks. I just started two days ago. But about 20% of the time I can walk 10 feet and then turn around and start walking back before I fall. It's tons of fun and costs less then climbing.

well i heard of this one trick were you arewalking and you go down on your feet but put one knee below the line its called a "drop knee" r somethin but what i cant figure out is how do you keep from making the line steady, it is always wobly when i try. i can walk 40 feet on a line with no problem so i know i can do. must be doin something wrong
