has anyone here ever experimented with making their own nuts and chocks from supplies that one can find at a hardware store?

OK now im not sure if you are serious or not but this probably isnt the bes of ideas. A set of nuts is pretty damn cheap, if you look around you can get a set for less than 50 bucks and if you jsut get the most used sizes 20-30 dollars gets you started. This stuff is going to be saving your life, and you arent even going to save much money.
Its easy enough to hurt yourself in this sport without trying to make your own sketchy pro.

yeah, i wasnt really thinking about making my own, i had just read about how some guys had used slung machine nuts as the first form of passive pro, and wondered if anyone had tried it since, and if so, had they used a foolproof technique, etc...

ahhhh, yeah back in the day i.e before i was born, there were no manufactured nuts and they used slung machine nuts and hardware store nuts, from the books i have read, if you fell on these and they caught you it was lucky. They were by no means bomber. The guys back then just had cantelope sized balls and were more bold then i can imagine. I mean i guess a slung machine nut is better then nothing, but not by much.

I've considered making pipe chocks (like a big bro except it doesn't adjust) from 2x4s or pipe steel. To say home made pro will always be dangerous is a poor line of logic. Do you know what the difference between Alien Cams and home made cams are? One has a printed tag.
The best cams on the market are manufactured essentially in a garage in North Laramie.
Now, to be sure, machinists nuts are pretty shady quality wise, but home made gear in general is not. Take the Krustyledege for example. Or heads. Or anything of that nature.

The point is, I will trust shady gear because it is better than no gear, but being homemade does not necessarily imply shadiness.

I'm gonna go with petsfed on this one. Shady gear is alway better then no gear. But at the same time, I'd trust something I designed and built, but I'd really have to inspect someone elses. I looked at the giant vally cams, and I like those. I'm actually designing a new style of cam right now. Once I finish it, I know I'll use it.

Another about "the guys back then" is that the alternative was to use pebbles wedged in cracks and features, with webbing or rope slung around them, for protection. There wasn't a commercially made and tested product available.
If someone has the know-how and resources to make their own gear, so be it, but it would take a huge amount of trust on my part to feel safe with somebody else's homemade" gear.
So, yeah, homemade is better than nothing. I'll agree with that.

Ok lets review, i never said all homemade gaer was sketchy or dagerous and i never said that making big broor valley giants was dangerous, i alos didnt say anyhing about ledges or other gear. There was a VERY specific question. It was about homemade nuts. In the current market there is NO reason to make your own nuts unless you are making a new design which isnt happeneing if you are going to a hardware store to make them. I have a bunch of homemade stuff i made my own bouldering pad and it catches better then any other pad ive ever fallen on.
I said making homemade nuts from the hardware store is shady and YES if you go to a hardware store and sling nuts that IS shady, i don't care what you have to say. I would glady fall on a valley giant because it isnt some slung hardware store nut, its a well desined and thought out product. There is a huge difference.
