I have a question about Horseshoe Canyon Ranch. I have a buddy that goes to school in Springfield, Missouri. I plan on going to visit him in mid May and we are going HCR for 4 or 5 days. I was wondering what to expect weather wise for this time of year and how crowded it usually is? Thanks

Check the weather online for Jasper Arkansas. Bouldering conditions will probably suck, Arkansas getting more humid everyday. However Horseshoe has a ton of really awsome bolted routes and trad climbs in the 5.8 to 5.12 range. There will probably be a lot of locals there, myself included most likely. Check out the North Forty, lots of established routes. During the week it won't have more than 20 climbers there, Weekends up to 50. But no camping. You have to camp somewhere else during the horseback season. You can rent a cabin there, but it will run you. Don't despair. Great camping can be found almost every fifty feet in Newton County.

I am thinking about going up there for awhile after I graduate on May 15 and how much does a cabin run.

I was there about a week ago and the North 40 was a little crowded (to be expected). There's so much climbing it is easy to avoid the crowds/groups if you want to. The weather was awesome - sunny days high 70s. Mid-May there's a good chance for rain but I wouldn't worry too much about that. Don't miss the routes on the north end of the canyon: Cliffs of Insanity and Far East - really good stuff there. And just over the fence is Buzzbee...wow. Camping: expect VERY crowded conditions at any of the camp areas along the Buffalo River - it is prime canoe/kayak season. The weekend we were there it was absolutely packed! Still - we set up a tent and camped there. Unfortunately, this time of year you can't camp at Horseshoe - but there are plenty of other places in the area.

Camping? Several places - the closest probably being Steel Creek. Turn left out of HCR dirt road onto highway 74 and go a few miles (3? 4?) it will be on your right. I think camping there is $10 a night - but you've got bathrooms, etc. On past Steel Creek is another camp area called Lost Valley, also on the right. If you turn right out of HCR and head towards Jasper there is camp area called Kyle's Landing. It will be on your left. You don't need to call ahead - though I would recommend getting there early to set up camp before all the spots are taken. Even if all areas are completely full - which following a good rain they could be because of the great kayaking/canoing - you can still squeeze in somewhere.

I know this is a littel late but the on season rates are ~$100/night and the off season rates are ~$50/night. On season is approx March-September (and that makes off season approx Sept-March). http://www.climbhcr.com has some of these details.
