I have retired a locking biner that i used with my atc. On the small end of the biner there is about a 7 mm crack that is about 1mm deep does anyone have any idea on how this happends ive used the biner climbing less than 10 times? It is on the inside on the biner not on anything that would have been exposed to hitting rock

Crack or gouge? If it's a crack, contact the maker, they'll want to know about it. If it's a gouge, you're on your own.

sounds like a manufacturing defect, as the biner was in the machine being formed.

That sounds pretty interesting. I would send it back to the manufacturer and get their theory on how or why. Maby they will give you a new biner? What brand was it?

Sounds like something from the manufacturing process. Have someone look at it.

is it a crack or a dent? If it's a dent see if there is a corresponding one at the other end of the biner. Some manufacturers pull-test their biners to half their rated strength, which sometimes leaves dents on the inside surfaces. Take a look at a Petzl Attache for an example (only one i can remeber seeing this on, off the top of my head - I think Omega Pacific does this too) If it's a crack, send it back to the manufacturer

well, I had a buddy buy a brand new petzl locker (not sure which one) and when he went out to use it fir the first time we found there was a chunk that had been somehow cut/broken/something off the screwgate that kept if from locking. I kid you not and I have no idea what happened, and the missing section was very clean edged ie: no burrs, or abrasive parts, just a clean cut "U" shape. Hmmm. Verry peculiar...

perhaps he measured it with, oh I don't know, a ruler or maybe he just guesstimated. what does it matter how he measured the depth of the crack. he asked a question and rather than contributing to the discussion you gave a smart ass remark. perhaps he did not respond because he got the answer he was looking for and did not feel the need to respond to your smart ass remark.

In reply to: Must be BS, as he has not replied to this post yet. So if someone dosen't respond to there own post, does that make it bs? I could see that maybe since he's getting flamed he dosen't want to waste his time. Why don't you stop the bsing?? Wait, I'm sorry, I meant the bitching!

Wait, I'm sorry, I meant the bitching! well, if it was a gouge, he could possibly measure the depth. Then he may have just called it a crack, because he figured thats what it was. Or maybe it was part of some diabolical plan to watch rrradam raise the bullsh!t flag...

If you send the afflicted locker to the company with a letter telling them about your history with it, they should send you a new one. They maintain their implicit guarantee on the product, but more importantly get feedback from the field on their gear. The real value to the company is that no high $$$ lieyers get involved in the situation. Manufacturing defects in climbing gear are rare. Well, at least for the reputable companies.
