Dickies work pants, sawed off about 6" below the knee. Very punk rock, and very abrasion resistant... They hold up better than anything else I've worn climbing weekly out at the cheese grater rock of JTree.

When I used to work in retail, my manager told me that the old school Dickies were used heavily by car/shop mechanics; being in a shop environment, pants and overalls got dirty really fast, and often had batter acid, oil, etc... spilled on them, so the Dickies clothing line added a thin layer of somethin-or-other to prevent the chemicals and whatnot from eating through as fast.

Good stuff

I'd have to say Arcteryx is definately the best. They have really great clothes, but they are expensive. The North Face seems overrated.

I'll definitely have to say Arc'teryx at the top, closely followed by Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, and Marmot. I guess I'll give TNF an honorable mention, as they do make some really good technical gear, but they have too much of the trendy, "look at me I'm an outdoor enthusiast" image. Of course, for the more casual wear, there's great stuff from Royal Robbins, Alf, Prana, etc.

To the original poster.... West Beach is a store, all they make are hoodies and T-shirts... well, companies like Fruit of the Loom and Gildan make them then West Beach prints on them.

My top picks:

Arcteryx > kickass soft and hard shells.
Prana > climbing
Icebreaker > the only merino worth buying
Dickies > the only pants I buy these days (thanks adam ;) )
Es > skate shoes
Blundstone > kickass leather slip on boots

nothing holds up like Carhartts, baby! I swear, thos things will almost stop bullets. The only downside, is that they are a tad heavier than those flimsy butt-hut shorts some people like to wear.

chalk another one up here for carhartts. fricking rooooool!!!!

Well, my favorite climbing pants are these cheap cords I got in the little boys dept at Wal-Mart- down with the frothing at the mouth yuppie-sorostitues trying to look trendy!!!!1 like, yeah, Prana's for total posers! yeah! totally!

And my North Face fleece has genuine b.o., cactus thorns, and lint fuzz pills all about it.

See, I'm not a poser. I'm hardkore. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to disparage people who carry Nalgenes with stickers on them and dumpster-dive for my next dirtbag meal.

Yeah, my favorite fleece pullover I own I got at Target for $10. The day I spend $500 for a Goretex jacket is the day I have $500 to burn. Jackets wear out way too fast to plunk down that kind of dough on them.

The North Face.... if you are highschool kid(no offense to you highschoolers) or a sorority girl trying to look cool. Let's face it something is wrong with your company when it is owned by Vanity Fair and when walking around on a college campus you see some Frat boys wearing a Denali Jacket with their frat letters in place of "The North Face" on the logo.

what he said not; not enough quality for the main stream/cool look price

i don't know about the idea of debating the best clothing companies, but i do have to say that my Chinese knockoff North Face clothing has been great so far. my dad got me a down jacket and a XCR Goretex shell for $32 each. if you don't figure the plane ticket into the cost i would say far and away this is at least the best value. but honestly, i despise the rest of The North Face clothing, over priced. anyhow, just in case ur heading through bejing soon and have time to waste, go and buy some "South" Face

Good stuff

Another good thing about Dickie pants is that they have this secret waist extension in them, when they start pinching you in two after too much beer and barbeque, you can cut these threads in waist and bam...got another couple of inches in the waist. I like dickie shirts too.

Most of my foo foo stuff for the past few years has been Mountain Hardware.

Arc'Teryx
Mammut
IBEX
Mtn Hardwear
Marmot
Patagonia
and Lowe Alpine top my list, but these are some other good ones that don't get much play (or, much distribution) in the US:
HAGLÖFS
GRIFONE
DIAMIR

I am a teacher, I cant' afford to be a slave to brand names, so I buy whatever is on sale at REI and EMS. I do like patagonia, though.

Ditto Arcteryx. Great shells, warm, practical, but very pricey. Not sure if they are really worth it (do you climb better if you did the approach in a $250 pullover?) But they sure are comfortable.

I love Gramicci pants, esp. the Mountain Jeans.

Cloudveil for quality

ArcTeryx for innovation

We're talking strictly clothing here... are we?

NO such thing as best clothing brand. What do I buy the cheapest I can find, buy what mfg.? Matters not! Don't believe the hype. Why be a walking billboard for some money soaked power hungry company.
