I have watched many climbing videos, and have seen many climbers at crags, gyms etc. Many of them (mostly men - obviously) seem to like to take their shirt off while climbing.
Myself personally, I do not like to do this. Most think that this could be some kind of macho deal or something, while others (the one's who do in fact take their shirt off) say that wearing a shirt is a hindrance to mobility while climbing. I do not agree that wearing a shirt could be in any shape or form a "hindrance to mobility" nor anything of the sort.
What's the deal with taking your shirt off?

Seriously, I agree with munchkin...it hinders you about as much as wearing socks does. Besides, I would scare everybody off if I took my shirt off.

yeah you dont see to many pics with me and no shirt. I lofe wearing a shirt cause then I can say "yeah that pusher shirt I was wearing was a new shirt design they are trying out and they are only available to the people sponsored people right now" To make people think I am sponsored and to spray alot about yourself. That is my reason for wearing a shirt.

When I climb, my arms and back get too big for my shirt...So I take it off.
And after I get through with a great send, my head gets too big to fit back into it.... (Cuz those 5.6 TR's can be mighty intimidating and to send one...very liberating...LOL)
I almost always climb with my shirt on as the rough texture of Josh rock tends to tweak my nipples...That, and I don't want people asking to make rugs out of my back hair....GROSS!!!
Climb with whatever choice of clothing you prefer...just CLIMB!...

I take mine off every chance I get- not to look cool, but because I like the way Sun and wind feel- I just do NOT dig on the shirt scene. I feel more "free" without one. I was NOT born at Woodstock

Well, for me, I dont take my shirt totally off. Usually when i get hot ill take it off but i have a "wife beater" on. You get to show off your guns and stay cool at the same time

I generally don't wear much clothes in the first place, so I usually don't have a shirt on. But when I am climbing, like Robert said, I like to keep my pert nipples protected. So I generally wear a shirt unless I am climbing clean cracks with no squeeze chimneys or o.w.'s, then I may just take it off. Besides, I am dead sexy and have a large tattoo on my back (Henry Rollins' sun but 3/4 size of his) so I like to show off my body.
But seriously, climbing videos are about glorifying the climbers in them. You can just see more when they don't wear shirts. Now if only the ladies would go topless!!

Taking your shirt off on a long climb, especially a wall, dehydrates you unnecessarily. It should rate right up there with taking a down bag. On a short route, when you are trying to get a tan, taking your shirt off is fine. Otherwise, you're just fatiguing yourself faster. A full day naked in the sun, doing NOTHING, will wipe you out pretty good.
I used to get alot of grief from partners because I prefered long-sleeved cotton shirts and baggy cotton pants. I even sewed a bandana around the back of a hat, so that they could crank it up a notch, and call me The Sheik.

Actually, leaving a t-shirt on when you start to overheat is better. It keeps the moisture from your sweat close to your body and acts like an air conditioner. By taking off your shirt, the moisture evaporates faster and leaves the surface dryer-therefore adding to the overheating problem.

I take off my shirt when it gets so hot that it starts sticking to me, also I try not to get the "truck driver's tan" in summer so I take it off to get a more uniform tan. The times I'll leave the shirt on is when I don't want my skin coming off on the rock such as scrapping nipples when jumping for a hold (I've had this happen, ouch) or when one needs to wedge into a corner like the one above me in this pic.

it's not about showing off (ok so I've done that one or two times) but more about necesity. if it's cold I'll leave the shirt on for sure!
shirts don't hinder mobility, they get caught on rock sometimes as shorts may do as well.

As soon as a little more testosterone starts flowing through your young male body you will FULLY understand, well understand may not be the right word, no, you will participate in the "Rock Monkey Mating Dance" that you are inquiring about.
We do it hoping that someone will notice "how cut I am", or "how fine I am" (not that I am), because we put alot of effort into keeping our bodies fit, and climbing is a great showplace for that beautiful machine we call the human body.
I think they do it in videos to show the level of fitness required to be a top climber.

I think people are too used to being clothed, really what's the big deal with why you take your shirt off? Personally (when I'm in shape and not flabby ) I take my shirt off all the time. I just don't like having it on. Same reason I hardly wear socks. I'll wear my sandals barefoot in the snow because I hate the feeling of wearing socks.
Take your shirts off dammit!! It's comfortable, it's natural and it's oh so sexy!
*Edit: There's a climb in the Owens River Gorge, I believe, called Show us your tits. Rumor has it that several girls do oblige when climbing it.

come climb in australian summer at mt arapiles, temps of like 45 degress celcius, u will want to climb with no shirt at well.....
plus, when u have a body like me, why not show it off.....

I myself: love seeing the poise and the bodies of climbing...
I've stated so, thorough out my stay here at Rockclimbing.com: that to watch a person climbing, male or female is poetic, and beautiful.
Shirtless, I can only say. I do enjoy it. I am only human. I see bodies so differently now that I climb. I see the human body as a wonder.
I love the back muscles, I've never noticed them before climbing. I have a new found appreciation.
I myself, tend to wear as little on the upperbody, as possible.
I do not like wearing shirts, nor sweatshirts...ect.
sportsbras,and at most, "wife-beaters" are all I can handle. I don't like feeling hindered by my clothing.
Cold weather: sweatshirt is what I'll wear. But, only cuz, I have to.

I keep my shirt on... but snug...loose clothing can be a hindrance, especially when it gets in the way of harness loops or belay devices!

i dont wear shirt while climbing as i would like to get a complete sun-tan! it also feel better to have the wind to keep me cool as it brushes across my sweaty body! A T-shirt tends to hinders my upper arm movement and irritates me badly!

It really depends.
The girls love to see the ripped muscels of climbers.
I'll take my shirt off on shorter routes, mainly because I get hot while climbing.
I may put it back on as soon as I get to the ground, it really depends on the weather.
There is no machoism related to climbing shirtless.

Far more important that people wearing or not wearing shirts, why can't anyone seem to understand that you don't form the plural of a word by adding an apostrophe? The subject of this line we are now following makes the plural of "climber" into "climber's" instead of the correct "climbers." Also included is the word "one's" instead of "ones" in the complaint. I know this is informal writing and some spelling goofs should be tolerated (I am not proofing this reply before I submit it), but this is truly maddening. I see it everywhere. The only mistakes more infuriating have to do with "to," "too" and "two" and "their" "there" and "they're."
Having said that, the obvious reason for taking a shirt off while climbing is to not get a farmer's tan, which is why I take mine off when the sun is out.
