In reply to:
Rule 1) If its moving and its not supposed to, use duct tape.
Rule 2) If it ain't moving and its supposed to, use WD-40.

or on that same note
Engineers need 3 things:
Duct tape to make things stick
WD-40 to make things go
and a hammer for the all the fine adjustments

Duct tape is used for this, of course!

I got new white shoes for Pennsylvania American Legion State Police Youth Week a few summers ago. We marched around everywhere at that camp and ran for at least 20 minutes every other morning. The bad part about the new shoes (which I had to get 'cause white was the dress code) was that they wore the skin right off of the back of my heel. They were tight, like any marching shoe should be, but had an unecessarily high rise on the heel. I'm never buying Adidas again.

I woke up every morning before we ran just long enough to place a nice coat of duct tape over the hot spot so my skin didn't wear away to the bone. Thanks duct tape!

IN climbing, duct tape is great for protecting static cordage from abrasion. I use silver, black and camoflage as the terrain requires. Duct tape is also useful to secure a better rope protector when rope is moving over an abrasive surface or edge

I live in alaska....need I say more   . Time to go find the picture of the bush plane that was duct taped together... Not having any luck. If anybody has this picture lying around its actually quite funny... That stuff is strong! Doubled over duct tape can pull cars out of ditches! Thats probably 10kn of strenght in something so small! The climbing companies need to look into what makes this so strong!

Duct tape can be bad. The glue comes off. It degrades.

When you're ready to step up, upgrade to Gaffer tape.

True duct tape atrisans don't just stick things together and patch stuff with duct tape. They create things that previously didn't exist. With duct tape and a bit of creativity anything is possible.

Though, I will echo glowering's remark. Gaffer tape is even better than duct tape. It's true. No, really. It's true. Tuna, surely you know this.

from a long-lost signature line:

Duct tape is like the force. Is has a dark side and a light side, and it holds the universe together.

Ripped a hole in my pants while post-holeing (sp?) in waist deep snow, should have brought the snowshoes. Fixed it up real nice with duct tape to keep the snow of my boys. Sucked cleaning of the residue to sew em up though.

I tell my patients that duct tape is good for warts...the girls don't like it too much though. Not a life saving usage, but interesting none the less. I once taped the walls of my tent together when they ripped apart in the middle of the night during a hurricane one fall on a fishing trip. That was more of a lilfe saving feature of duct tape I guess.

Believe it or not, Euroford, cloth "duct" tape is no good for air ducts. Foil tape or a brush on sealant should be used. This is a common misconception, and in a lot of places, a code violation.

FOR TAPING DUCKS, OF COURSE

Back when I used to skateboard I would routinely duct tape my pants back together. It even lasts through a few washes, and protects you from road rash better than the pants.

sorry no pics

I went against the naysayers and duct taped one of my gear loops. It's holding up just fine.

btw: that foil tape is almost just as usefull, and freekin WAY sticky. especially combined with the also very cool Dow 777 spray adhesive.

Sorry, man, I had to jump on that know-it-all moment. Nashua is the shit, but spendy. I actually put two big strips of 3 inch on the bottom of my shovel blade to use as an emergency signal reflector. How dork is that!?

Right now, I'm really liking how it's getting rid of the wart on my thumb....seriously.

Worked better than getting it frozen off (tried that and the damn thing came back).

When I was in college, in an acappella group, I was in a skit where I was a 'music repairman'. The group sang a chord, and one person intentionally sang off-key, resulting in a nasty sound. I was 'called in', and proceeded to locate the singer who was off-key. I whipped out some duct tape, and slapped it on his face. The next chord sounded great, and everyone laughed at the skit.

But then the singer who had the duct tape on his mouth had to get it off. In making the big motions necessary for a big laugh, I had actually slapped the duct tape quite firmly on his face. When he peeled it off, it hurt quite a bit, and he let out an involuntary, loud 'OW!'. The audience found that funnier than the skit.

-aB

ps: he forgave me, eventually.
