So I'm going to Europe in July/August and I really really want to climb but I'm very afraid of the heat destroying my dreams. Is Calanques too hot? Where's a popular destination this time of year where I might be able to find a partner? I'm just backpacking around so willing to travel anywhere within Spain/France/Italy/Switzerland/Germany etc etc.
I would greatly appreciate any beta. Thanks.

JUst going down from a 3-day hike in Belledonne, above Grenoble. The weather was not nice but I was lucky enough to be rained 3 x 5 minutes in 3 days. All the other showers occured when I was in a hut!
And still a lot of snow above 1900 m, with very large and powerful streams everywhere. I had to put my shoes off to cross one, the water was collllld!
NO climbing here, showers and storms everyday for 15 days or so now...

Chrish, July August is usually HOT, Callanques in particular. Mountains are the best destination during that period - Alps in France, Italy or Switzerland, Dolomites in Italy, Pyrenees or Picos de Europa in Spain...More precision on type of climbing you want to do would help, as would having a car...

Flower, unfortunately living in Florida has prepared me to climb absolutely nothing in the way of multi-pitch or trad. The only thing I'm currently able to do safely would be sport. I suppose I could hold out for the chance of finding a partner while there who's willing to show me the ropes (I wonder how many times that pun has been used in climbing...) but I feel like finding that person is really unlikely. Do you know of any particular sport areas which may be popular near Geneva so I might find a partner? I really appreciate the help.

Hi chrish22,
I'm frequently in Geneva, so if you happen to be there when I am, then possibly we could climb. However, I've not done any climbing in the immediate vicinity of Geneva... so I wouldn't be a very good guide. PM when you know more details.
The best gear shop in Geneva is called Cactus Sport in Carouge. They have a large selection of guide books, and the staff are helpful and friendly, even when you can only speak english.
Also, you could make your way to Frankenjura in Germany for sport climbing, but that place s much better if you have a car. Quite muggy at that time of year too.

This is awesome  'clinch the wine bottle and turn in on the left edge of the vertigo - stop, skip the frame, go for the lamp on the left....' Nice idea, I'd love it.
Actually climbing is a little tricky 'cause hay fever kicked in brutally this year making it almost impossible to stay outside right now. I will go down to Leipzig this weekend though - Gabe (sbaclimber) is here and we're going to spend the weekend at the crags - either around Leipzig or we'll head for the Elbsandstein.

'sup all? it seems I'll be heading over to the land of the eurofreak fairly soon and will be hitch-hiking in more or less a straight line from the UK to chamonix. anyone along the way want to chill a bit or hook up for some routes? (along the way or in the chambles)
It would be radge bizzle (my friends word) to meet some of the freaks of this board. first round is on me, too.
also, will have scotch with me.

Dear Folks,
Anybody could give an advice on good rock climbs aroung Grenoble for this time of the year (in two weeks)? I know about Presles, but it would be nice to do smthg higher up in the mountains. 5c trad / 6b bolted, the longer the better.

Hey folks!
My holidays come closer and I will have the opportunity to spend a day or two at Setesdal/Norway. Unfortunately I won't be able to bring the whole clang-clong for clean climbing (the two days are not worth the over baggage), so I have to stick to the bolted not the bolt.
Anyone been there to recommend a route or two? Something in the 5.8-5.10ish range?

Actually, we're not on a climbing trip (I know, big waste), so this is a compromise I could come up with the rest of the family. Maybe I can get something done about this though when we're there, I'm thinking about getting the old man and my middle brother on some nice and easy granite slab...  My dad used to climb back in the days when the Swiss seat was considered a technical overkill but hasn't touched rock since then. The middl'un even owns climbing shoes.
Further journey isn't planned by now. Maybe a roundtrip via Bergen, up north and then back to Germany via Sweden. We'll be pretty independent since we're gonna camp.
I just came back from Stockholm right now. Scandinavia is a gas for sure. Can't wait to climb there

as you might know ua and ren are mountain hopping in peru.
we all know about numerous near misses of ua, but this time its for real.
I got a text message from ua calling for help from the top shoulder of chopicalqui at about 6200m.
help is on the way, mainly directed by our friend ösi in huaraz.
a team of mountain guides had set out to find them on the normal route- without success.
now we would need a helicopter to scan the mountain for their trace.
to start this we need to call her or renauds parents to make sure the heli gets paid (peruvian buerocracy...).
does anyone has more beta about ua's mother or renauds parents (adress or phone number).
please send me a pm in case you come up with anything that would help!

news from peru: our friend ösi has hired an airplane and started the search by air. the belgian climbing federation has assured to cover the cost of the search.
