as you might know ua and ren are mountain hopping in peru.
we all know about numerous near misses of ua, but this time its for real.
I got a text message from ua calling for help from the top shoulder of chopicalqui at about 6200m.
help is on the way, mainly directed by our friend ösi in huaraz.
a team of mountain guides had set out to find them on the normal route- without success.
now we would need a helicopter to scan the mountain for their trace.
to start this we need to call her or renauds parents to make sure the heli gets paid (peruvian buerocracy...).
does anyone has more beta about ua's mother or renauds parents (adress or phone number).
please send me a pm in case you come up with anything that would help!

That's bad news!

I have an address of her in Buissenal, Belgium, I don't even now if it's still valid...

F.U.C.K.

I'll drop Taz & Paolo a line, they know her a little longer, maybe they picked up something.

Gosh, I so hope to be able to read her trip report...

Just talked to stone. Her parents could be found and all is set for the search. They're waiting on better weather now so they can use the plane for searching.

fingers crossed

Hello to you all
Saturday I saw the post from stone on the Belgian forum and sent him a message because I know Julia and Renaud from the indoor climbing here.
Stone asked me to inform the Belgian Alpine Federation and the Belgian embassy in Lima, so I did saturdaynight.
The Belgian embassy informed me some minutes ago that their tent has been spotted by the plane and a rescue team is on his way. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
Greetings,
Kurt

Sorry - in case you don't speak French here is the free web translation (I don't have time for anything more- maybe another french speaker can better?)

In reply to:
Two Belgian mountaineers disappeared(12/08/2008) © D.R. Native of the region of Turnai, they are reported missing since Friday

Renaud Ginion and Julia Snihur are two native experienced mountaineers of the region of Turn. Since some time, the tandem left for the Peru to live their passion on the summits of the mountain range of the Andess. Unfortunately, their families no longer have of new ones of them since Friday.

Renaud Ginion is 35 years old and is native Turn, Julia Snihur comes from Buissenal and 25 years old. "The two young people sent a distress SMS in the day of Friday to ask counsels in order descend the mountain", explains François Delhaye, spokesperson of the ministry of the Foreign Affairs.

The two mountaineers were located at that very moment not far from the summit of the Chopicalqui that is situated in near of 6,400 meters in the massive one Huascaran that dominates Peru. The massive one Huascaran does not be located far of Filed, the capital of Peru. "Since this Friday, we no longer let us have contact. For the moment, three teams of salvage already intervened to rediscover tracks of duet but unsuccessfully. A helicopter equally flew across the mountains in order to notice them but in vain. It is necessary to say that the conditions forecast are very bad. Of more, to that altitude, it is difficult to find a vehicle able to fly across the mountains."

On the spot, authorities questioned other mountaineers that frequented normally them same ways that the two Belgians. None of them seems to have noticed them. "The position is clearly disturbing. The bad climatic conditions do not arrange the data especially to more than 6,000 meters of altitude. Of more, they arrived it seems at the end of their food reserves."

Since Friday, the ministry manages the contacts with the Peru for the families. "Our embassy uses relay with local authorities. We do our better for than the families them more better are informed and benefit from the best possible assistance in their research." While hoping that the next research be fructueuses. "In this moment (editor's Note, yesterday), an airplane flies across again the zone to rediscover the disappeared ones."

Hello,

the article seems to be old news (from before the planesearch). In the last frase they only tell that a plane started searching yesterday.
This morning I received a new message from the embassy that the rescueteam had to stop because of the darkness and the difficult terrain, 90m below the place where the tent has been seen. They will go on in the morning (at this moment it's 6 a.m. in Peru I think).
I hope I have more (good) news by this evening.

Greetings, Kurt

In reply to:
Bonjour,
Nous (famille de Renaud) venons d'avoir un coup de téléphone de Renaud et Julia. Ils sont vivants et redescendus par leur propres moyens. Nous pouvons enfin respirer.

Yves Dieulesaint
(Beau frère de Renaud)

Hello,
Us (Renaud's family) just got a phone call from Renaud and Julia. THey are alive and downclimbed on their own. We are eventually relieved.

Yves Dieulesaint
(Renaud's brother in law).
