Saw these photos on Gunks.com today. They seem to fit with this thread, but I'm posting it here so as not to get in the way of the "on subject and respectful" "polite discussion of specific accidents" going on in there.

You guys are mistaken. Clearly, that is a fetus at the base of the cliff. The line is simply the umbilical cord. This is just another instance of a climber giving birth while soloing Handy Andy.

Between those cords and shiny things that make funny noises it's a wonder anyone makes it out alive.

How much do those baby seats weigh? You know, the ones you can clip into the car seat...

Gold. Almost as good as the picture of the TR anchor on the dead, fallen tree (also at the Gunks).

Saw this going on a few minutes earlier, leader was about 15ft off the deck when I came through. He was very much on lead, no anchor from above or anythihng. And to set the record straight she was not texting or playing with a nut tool.... She was in the middle of an intense battle of Cats Cradle (for real). This moron dad is going to bust up his kids face. She was anchored in with one nut... could have at least added the dog into the system with a nice sliding X.

I just really really want to see the leader take a good fall above pro, & see how the belayer gets slammed into the rock face first as her hands will be holding her phone or what ever it is & wont be able to take the fall in time.

I wouldn't, if her anchor is a single nut, she's gonna get slammed into the wall and ripped up the climb, likely colliding with the climber along the way. If the climber is really unlucky, that dog may suffer the same fate as pepper.

I think even the dog looks spooked about the whole situation. Is it just me, or does the gunks draw more of these types of climbers than any other area? I've never felt as much in danger at any other crag as I do when I'm at the gunks. Could it be it's proximity to NYC?

Not to be completely heartless, but that girl would probably be better off with the fatal lesson than with walking around with the scars from the hard lesson for the rest of her life. After she gets slammed into the wall and then pulled through the first carabiner she would probably look like that woman who got attached by the chimp.

I'm still voting for just the dad seeing the repurcussions of this...It's like hoping that a child in a carseat gets a hard lesson for her father's driving habits. What lesson would the girl learn? Edit: To be fair to j_ung, he said that he'd rather see two people receive a hard lesson than a fatal lesson, and I agree with that. However, I disagree with the first text that I quoted above...j_ung's response is addressing a different point.

It is not staged. I came up the stairmaster and ran into a friend who told me about it as my partner and I walked towards the Nears thru the Uberfall. It was still going on as we went by and I had the camera ready. Through a friend the Dad has been ID'd and he commented that the dog actually got tangled up. He also commented to the friend that sent him the link to see if it was him that he didn't have time to worry about or respond to the posting

I GOTTA REMEMBER, ALWAYS CLOSE THE SYSTEM! (FUCKING TIGER!) Kurtz closed the system. He tied me off and walked away. I just wanted a belay, and for my sins, she gave me one.... (The Heart of Darkness, or How to Teach Your 12 Year Older Daughter to Belay) Btw, been there, done that. I call it grigri self belay snag removal mechanism, hehe) DMT I quite liked the "auto-dropper" coined by Arrogant_Bastard (for a grigri... ) In reply to: and yes, maybe he was in a solo mindset (been there, done that as well), when the rope is only there to belay the second up; chances of that second catching a fall? I never had to find out... If he was in a soloing mindset then don't be on belay and put your kid at risk for a face slam if you indeed take the whip or slip 1 person injured instead of two

CliffDestructo wrote: It is not staged. I came up the stairmaster and ran into a friend who told me about it as my partner and I walked towards the Nears thru the Uberfall. It was still going on as we went by and I had the camera ready. Through a friend the Dad has been ID'd and he commented that the dog actually got tangled up. He also commented to the friend that sent him the link to see if it was him that he didn't have time to worry about or respond to the posting Well, at least the dad has his priorities, such as they are. Did you then step in and teach the little girl that allowing her daddy to die at her feet might not be something you'd want to see?

Did you mean to ask if I stepped in to help so that I would not see him die or Did I step in so that she would not see him die? I did neither and almost told the ranger to either call DYFS ? or get the litter close to the climb? The Gunks are full of this and if you stepped in every time you saw this you wouldn't even cart your gear to the rock bc you would never climb. I have stepped in a bunch of times. The last was when a large guy was going to rap off a 4 inch dia. tree 40 feet up near 3 pines bc his girlfriend couldn't do the moves on the 5.3. He had the rope 2 feet off the ground to prevent rope drag when he pulled it

Of course, in the little girls defense, she may not have any clue that her inaction may be setting her dad up for an assisted suicide. I would have said something, even just a quick "you need to keep your hand on this rope at all times sweetie" as I walked past. But that's a personal choice, much like everyone else was making in this situation. Everyone was choosing to go their own way, unconcerned with the others. I'm not dissing on your decision as I understand, but I couldn't walk away. I would still tie in with you at some point even knowing of your course of action here, but I would never tie in with the man who was leading in that picture. I'd like to think it's staged. It's likely the device would catch him anyway, but I keep seeing all kinds of these Grigri "accidents" over and over. I hope the asshole reads this.

I think this thread might make my position clearer to the leader. http://www.rockclimbing.com/...d;page=unread#unread If you want to kill yourself, don't do it in front of your little girl. Go get a shotgun, head into the deep woods where you know cougars and coyotes are prowling and blow your brains out. Tie a rope around your neck with a heavy weight on the other end and jump off a bridge into deep water when no one is around. Swallow a bunch of pills and lay down on the bed after you've washed them down with a few shots of whiskey. Don't kill yourself in front of any child. Just leave a clear suicide note for your loved ones.

Thread drift! Get a seedy motel room in Barstow, swallow a bottle of sleeping pills, strip naked and lie down in the bathtub! Cut your wrists and swim out to the Great Barrier Reef! Take pills, climb into the trunk of your car and call the scrap yard to pick it up! Climb K2 in shorts and a T-shirt! Sneak into Cape Canaveral for a ringside seat at a shuttle launch! Go backpacking in North Korea! Start a website called mafiavideos.com!
