Girly Girl or Tomboy?

I’m sitting here at work with neat clean hair, nice dress and shoes and a very small amount of makeup (lips and eyes only) yet I’m still a tomboy at heart. To someone who doesn’t know me, they might look at me and think quite the opposite. Yet to me, it’s the tomboy side of me that keeps me happy. That’s who I really am. I have crooked, deformed feet that were acquired from jamming my feet into my climbing shoes. I actually like the fact that my legs show bruises and scratches from my adventures over the last couple of weeks. I have dirt imbedded into the prints of my hands from my ropes and gear that I can’t seem to scrub out. And my fingernails and ingrown toenails . . .yuck! Could it be that women like us represent the best of both worlds, when we can feel “normal” in either situation? We’ve mastered the art of looking well kept yet we are ever so at home even after multiple days without a shower and happy to accumulate more dirt and muck all over our bodies. It feels like balance. Which side of you are you most comfortable with? The clean-cut, stereotypical woman or the grunting, sweating, camping, climbing chick that you are? For me the answer is obvious. I’m happier with the later. Having only met 1 other fem on this site, I was wondering where the consensus lies. Are you a girly girl, a girly tomboy or just a tomboy? I guess I’m also thinking about this because I’m so desperately longing for that next moment when I can be on the road again for days, all covered in muck without all this fru fru crap.

tracyyyyyy!!

from your photos you appear to be a very attractive girl who loves to climb and get dirty, but who also cleans up well. :D

you are what i describe as a "dirt-barbie" -- and THAT is a GOOD thing!

I absoluetly love this! I tend to want to lean more towards girly-girl, but I know I'm not. Oh well, as long as I'm having fun!

hahaha!

yeah, i clean up okay but i prefer to avoid that. i don't wear heels to save my back (start young)
i don't wear makeup except for rare occasions, i'd rather not be bothered. i bike to work, towel off and get changed into semi business attire.

i loooove being dirty when camping or climbing.

dirt barbie. lovin the term, people! when i was younger i was outside working on the car with dad, took auto mechanics in high school... etc.

my partner sometimes says i'm "sooo girly" but that's just because i am very giddy around him (love, it does strange stuff!)

12 days until my 8 day road trip! bring on the dirt baby!

Dirt Barbie - Great Term!

I like to think I adapt to my surrounding. When I'm in the city I'm more of a girly girl. At work I look "done" but I don't wear a ton of make-up. When it's time to go out at night I wear a little more make-up - have to be dramatic... I must confess, I love shopping and getting a great deal. Now that could be a new dress or a new tank to climb in. I'm not picky. (Side Note: If you ever stop at Miguels they sell the Prana tanks about $10 less than retail stores and catalogs.)

When I'm in the great outdoors the last thing I want to think about is how my hair looks and  is my make-up alright? Not to mention make-up and sweat just don't mix. I cut my hair short last summer and love it! Just wash and go and when it gets too unruly out comes the bandana. I love getting dirty and I'm proud of every cut, scrap, and bruise on my body!

Definitely more of a tom-boy. It drives my boyfriend's mother crazy.
I never wear jewelery other than a plain watch and a ring my bf gave me...I never wear makeup unless its a special occasion, I avoid skirts (except for my ACTION SKIRT...its all stretchy and stuff and I could probably climb in it no problem). My hair is wash and go. I don't primp much, my elbows are dry and yucky, I don't have any idea whether I have an oily t-zone. My nails are chewed off stubs, with flaking silver nail polish (my one girly weakness, I like nail polish...preferably chipped though.), none of my clothes coordinate, and I hate pink. :)

But, occasionally, I enjoy getting all dolled up and wowing people that my t-shirt and jeans self can actually look girly. I just prefer to be comfy rather than primped most times. And I don't ever want to need more than 15 minutes to get ready in the mornings (post shower). Just seems silly to need that much routine. I mean, who am I trying to impress? I'm fine just the way I am...and the dirt gives me character. :D

Burt Bronson is a gay man in a man's body hiding in the closet.

This is so old, but, I'm a lesbian trapped in a man's body.

Dirt Barbie. An instant classic. Gonna name a climb that next week, I swear it. I really need a dirt barbie to be in on the FA though. OK, maybe I'll wait til I can get a bona fide trad girl out and THEN call one dirt barbie. It's gonna happen.

Really now, are there any girly girl climber chicks?

GIve me the tom-boy, or better yet, the DIRT BARBIE every time. I FOOKIN hate girly girls.

After all, Sweaty girls are HOT! (It's a pun, see, don't hit me for being a pig. OINK.)

My sisters make me feel bad that I'm not quite as girly as I could be. Don't get me wrong, I like to dress up, but they have learn that they don't have to be a fashion plate every time they go out. Every time there's a family gathering I get comments like: "I'm going to show you how to do your hair", or "you can't wear that colour", or "why don't you go get your eye brows waxed". The worst is that they just assume that becasue I chose to lounge around the house in Prana pants, or heven forbid go out like that (*gasp* what would the folk at the climbing gym think!) that I'm not capable of girling myself up.

Christmas time was like this, and I tell you I started thinking that maybe they were right. Then my buddy Michelle snapped me back to reality. I met up with her and she was wearing just plain jeans and sneakers. She didn't say that wearing hiking boots was silly or that I should go buy more clothes, we just hung out and had fun. None of that fashion critique that my sisters insist on giving when they go out.

I don't want to give you the immpression that my sisters are all that bad, they just don't realize that my lifestyle is different then theirs. When you have to bike every where you go for example heels and skirts kinda fall by the wayside.

Well...3 or 4 years ago we were taking a day off at the Gallery at Red Rocks. We noticed the smell of perfume in the air and turned around in time to see a woman and man approaching. The man looked like your typical climber, but the woman was totally decked out - high heels, short shorts, skimpy top, made-up like a Vegas showgirl, hair totally coiffed, prefume out the wazoo.

Imagine our surprise when she led all the climbs (not in heels, though). She led up to .10b or so (OK, so it was the Gallery, still..). Her character and behavior fit the get-up, so if it was a joke she carried it out to the fullest.

I have a good firend who is kinda a giry-girl, but does seem to do quite fine in enviroments that girly-girls normally can't handle. She's in my engineering class, and she goes out climbing with me, but she also really enjoys clothes and comes to class on a semi regular basis all decked out (heels, make-up, clevage being shown off). She's never gone climbing in heels or anything like that :), but I would think that mos people when they first meet her would beleive that she was an all out girly-girl.

from my guy perspective, give me tomboy over girly-girly every single time... we like the girl who can get ready in 15 minutes by simply throwing on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt... put on a ballcap or pull the hair back in a ponytail is all we need... don't cake on the makeup, we don't need that..

nothing's hotter than a tomboy/girl-next-door in a rugby shirt and jeans with the only "makeup" being a really cute smile... slap on a ballcap or pull the hair back into a ponytail or just over your ears and you're set...

this is a plea to all the "dirt barbies" out there... don't change a thing...

Two quotes from a climbing trip I once took: After one girl's first sport lead... "I don't think I like to lead. What if I slip and hit my face?" And at the end of the day, returning to the car all grubby... "Look at my gear - it's a mess! Do most people have nice gear for the gym, and junky gear that it's okay to get dirty outside?" Another girl on the trip was American, but likes to joke that she's really Eurotrash. So yeah, I suspect there are plenty of real girly-girl climbers, but most of them stick to the gym, most of the time.

Tracy - I'm also sitting here at work in heels and a skirt, but am just DYING to get outside. Sometimes the professional, "girly" side and the outdoorsy tomboy side seem like split personalities--especially when you live in an urban area and have a professional job. However I do find balance in being able to strut as good as the next girl AND climb hard with the boys. You're exactly right...I think we have the best of both worlds.

No truererer words have ever been written. Ponytails and ballcaps rule and don't let anybody tell you different.

It's nice to have you men in the room reply to this, it's nice to know that the type of men that we would really be interested in (athletic outdoorsy men, at least I like that) are really interested in us dirt barbies (still loving the name :) ). I don't think I would like a fellow who would be interested in a girly girl in the first place, those girls can keep 'em!

yes. it is VERY sexy.

the SMART men know this.

why? because you can always take a dirt-barbie, hose her off and doll her up. but it's damn near impossible to get a glamour girl to agree to play dirty ... and LIKE it.

I'm definately a tomboy. I love getting dirty and being outdoors and all that good stuff. My mom hates it that I never fix my hair or dress nicely all the time, I just really don't care how I look. I like being simple and being able to get ready in the morning in about 20 min. at the most after my shower. People shouldn't have to judge me by the way I look or the way I dress. Yes, I do occasionally dress up if I'm going somewhere nice or something like that-makeup and all, even with a dress sometimes  Does this make me a girly tomboy?

sure, we like it when the dirt barbies get dolled up on occasion, but nothing major.. we don't need the fancy hair-do or the layered-on makeup.. no heels or anything... just a simple sundress will do.. and of course, a bandaid on the knee just to remind us that you're a dirt barbie at heart.. even if you don't need a bandaid on the knee, put one on... trust me...

Just so long as you boys remember that even a Dirt Barbie likes to be told that shes looks good when she dresses up. If we spend time on makeup or hair, we'd like for it to be noticed.

I will venture that it isn't the dirt and bruises that make you particularily sexy. It is more of the aura that you put off that is saying "I am comfortable in my own skin and I don't really care what anybody else thinks" that makes you sexy.

I had one other person killfiled by mistake and I don't know how I did it. But I noticed people were quoting you and I had no clue where they came from and had to investigate.

The last formal I went to was a few months ago. I got home from climbing at the gym put on my dress then put on some deodorant, very little makeup, and brushed my hair and put it back up in a ponytail. Left for formal in less than 10 min. of getting home.
My sorority sisters (keep in mind this is not a typical sorority) laugh at me when we have events that we have to dress up for because I hate having to dress up and I'll put it off until the last minute. And will rarely wear a skirt unless I have to. The second I can I change or I put on different shoes...one time I had my hiking boots on with a black skirt and they made so much fun of me. I was like, "I just want to be comfortable!"

Love this thread 'cuz I definitely look like a girly girl (short and blond), but on the inside I'm all tomboy. The more scrapes and bruises the better! Not into makeup or heels, although I do have a weakness for other kinds of shoes..

yeah i still have that "typical girl" shoe thing.

instead of heels though i buy climbing shoes, sandals, flip flops, hiking boots... etc. :) just less frequently because they're all so pricey!

this reminds me, i have an upcoming road trip where i'll probably be hiking a lot. i should get new shoes...

Is it possible to say both? I love to play and be outside . . . and if I don't come to work on Monday with scraps and bruises I don't feel like I had a good weekend.

Then again, I love sundresses and sandals and being feminine too. Granted I am not about high heels and lipstick . . . but I definitely am "girly too."

Funny thing though - whenever one of my climbing friends sees me dolled up I hear "you're wearing a dress?!!?" with a bit of shock and awe. To them, I am all tomboy - but I like to clean up too

Whoever was wondering if it was really the dirt, or something else...

IT's the DIRT. Dirt is sooo sexy.... I Love dirt. GOT covered in it today straightening out a route... I just need a Dirt Barbie to get dirty with.

If you really like the dirt, if you think clean rock is for sissies, if your friends make you want to puke when you ask about an obvious line and they say, "That 's not a route, it's not in the guide book, message me. We'll find some dirt.

Himm, I totally like being girly when I feel like it - in the city... I like dresses, I like shoes (granted I mostly just look at them since I dont have much money and I am not wearing high heels much either since I have to run around a lot) Yet, I would definitely call myself a tomboy. Being a tomboy is more about attitude than what you wear I would say. I wont mind dirt, not showering, sweat, smell, etc. etc. when I am outdoors. I like it. But that makes me a happier person when I am in the city, going out, and caring about what I wear for it - I know the other me, it makes me smile. I guess, this wont be as fun if I was just one or the other, I enjoy being both, it makes me laugh at myself.
Dont you think that these are a little stereotypical as well?
I'm definately a tomboy. I love getting dirty and being outdoors and all that good stuff. My mom hates it that I never fix my hair or dress nicely all the time, I just really don't care how I look. I like being simple and being able to get ready in the morning in about 20 min. at the most after my shower. People shouldn't have to judge me by the way I look or the way I dress. Yes, I do occasionally dress up if I'm going somewhere nice or something like that-makeup and all, even with a dress sometimes  Does this make me a girly tomboy?

Sarah
I am not alone!!!!!! My mother harps like I was still a 12 year old! I love being a tomboy. But I also love turning the occasional head on the rare days that I get dressed up.

definately both. i absolutely love formals and getting all dressed up (though my idea of formal hair is maybe taking a curling iron to it for a couple of minutes...i despise hairspray!). i hate makeup...as little as possible is best. haven't worn lipstick in years...give me my burt's bees chapstick anyday. i admit, i love heels and cute skirts and dresses and i like pink. on the flip side, i just got back from the gym...just took one of my girlfriends climbing for the first time and got her hooked...and i've got a bruise about as big around as a golf ball and i was totally psyched about it...and i scraped my elbow and came home with chalk and grime all under my broken fingernails. and it felt sooooo good! gimme my halter and pants and i'm set. i love flip flops...if i could wear no other footwear but those for the rest of my life i'd be thrilled. i love my hemp necklace...have been tempted to throw that on with a formal (but haven't..my mom would have a fit) b/c i hate formal jewelry. sometimes i think i'm a walking contradiction b/c some days i hate dressing up, other days i love it...i dunno. the important thing is that i have no aversion whatsoever to dirt or cuts and scrapes...bring it on!

I've gotta admit to being a girly girl who does tom boy type things. I think all of the posts I've read have been at some point on that Spectrum, I'm just a little further on the Barbie side than the dirt. My medicine cabinet is full of moisturizers, makeup, nail polish, and at least six kinds of perfume. None of which is worn when I'm doing any kind of physical workout. I'm new to climbing, and I absolutely love it. I have friends who would freak over the calluses and scrapes I come home with, but I view them as my own personal "battle scars" and I hope to have more.

I like the fact that I could spend equal amounts of time in REI or Nine West and be perfectly happy. Maybe I'll reach Dirt Barbie status at some point, but right now, I'm still making the transition from Steve Madden to Mad Rock. Keep your fingers crossed.

--The problem here for me is I don't think I was ever a girly girl , or a real tomboy. Mostly I'm described as sort of well "sexy". I guess I have that look, large bust, large blue eyes, and a strong survival attitude.
I have gotten alot of inspiration over the years from male counterparts.I've been successful in male business arenas, and have been respected, and taken seriously because of that in spite of how cute I looked.
Now with rockclimbing of course I'm messy and dirty and I really don't worry about looking girly.
Now you should have seen the girls I rowed crew with for two years. Boy were they tough  I felt soo wimpy sometimes.
8) .
I do enjoy dressing up and wearing clothing that's feminine and pretty. I like some makeup when I'm dressed for it,lipgloss and eyeliner. I wax my legs too. :P
I feel for me I've reached a point where I'm secure and comfortable with who I am so its easier. I don't really need anyones approval. I'm almost too independent. But alas, Of Course I try to look more feminine, if I'm going out on a date or something. (It's all about being a strong women now. )

im a mix of both
and besides that point
i dont even feel im in a classification

i wear my hair down a lot, just a blowdry and im done or i put it up in a pony tail

i paint my toenails cause i live constantly in flip flops (even in the winter im wearing them) REEFS are the best...anyways, yea i paint my toenails different bright colors because they are cheery and im cheery and happy too

clothes: im into the outdoorsy look twisted with classic stuff... like Gap jeans with tiny white tshirt with big chunky earthy looking leather belt and nice big hemp necklace and of course flip flops!!!

bandanas are occasionally worn to jazz up an outfit

makeup: when going out (movies, school) i wear lip shine and mascara and bronzer to make my face glow but to formal things i wear eyeshadow too

jewelry is a BIG accesory that i always must have (rings, african necklaces, etc)

i dont know what i am actually, sometimes i like dressing up and sometimes i just like sweats and hoodies but basically im always wearing jeans and tshirts...yay me

I am both. I love all outdoors stuff and find I'm often alot tougher than alot of the guys I go with. Some guys (and) girls can be super whiney. That being said I can be a real pansy and struggle all the time with fear when snowboarding or climbing. I can be the biggest slob and don't wear makeup everyday or even comb my hair, but when I do get dressed up....I'm a go big or go home kind of girl. I wear full makeup, carnival type eye shadow, dark lipstick, hair done, jewlery everything. I buy makeup like crazy, even though I only wear it a couple times a month, I'm addicted. The crazier the better, all out there colours like bright blue and green and orange. I figure what's the point in wearing it if you can barely see it. I look so diferent when done up that people dont' recognise me. I like dirt alot, and always have dirty hands from climbing or gardening. My skin is always peeling off my hands, I have no nails. I detest real prissy girls who can't leave the house without makeup and can't go on a week trip without showers. That's about it, I am totally both.

hmm...definitely a little bit of both.

Tomboy: i guess i'm pretty tough on some outdoors stuff--being called "burly" and "tough" by the boys, i definitely push myself pretty hard when i climb and ski. I don't mind getting dirty and can deal w/ being away from all the amenities for a while. I'm definitely used to having lots of scratches, bruises, and sunburns. It's always wierd to be dressed up for some occassion (like a wedding) with all sorts of climbing scrapes/bruises visible--all the other folks wondering, "what did you do to yourself?"

that said, i still love the feeling of being clean, love dressing up to go out, like wearing my jewelry, occassionally do the makeup (mostly just lipstick), and I seem to put a lot more effort into my hair than anything else. I rarely shave my legs (think i'm just too lazy), never paint my nails, and don't understand things like "exfolliate."

i am almost always perpetually wearing sandals, shorts and a t-shirt. When i lived in mountain towns in NM and CO, the women and men seemed to wear identical clothes (jeans and fleece). Boys in town would do a double-take when i dressed up ("you clean up real nice") cause they were so used to me being in jeans/shorts all the time. Now in San Francisco, it feels nice to dress up a bit more. It's fun to be both a bit of a girly girl and a tomboy--keeps people guessing! and i like feeling free to change around...

I too try to clean up well, but I like being dirty. One of the hardest things in my short life thus far was going to the restroom to wash my hands and there was no dirt left in the sink. Since I've started climbing I've fixed that problem!

i don't think you have to choose one way or the other; you just balance between the two. i work in a restaurant where i have to wear a teeny little dress all day, i just got a pedicure, and i love to shampoo. but in just a few hours i'll be stuffing my pretty pink toenails into my climbing shoes and getting hot and sweaty at the gym - and i'll be loving it! i suppose, though, that if i had to put a label on it'd be a girly-tomboy. you could probably ask my climbing boyfriend for a better title, though. i'm sure he could tell you a thing or two about this dirt barbie :)

Tomboy with a closet girly side. Grew up playing sports with boys yet still had a nice wardrobe for my Barbie doll  .

I had a major Dirt Barbie look at work 2 weeks ago. Drove up to Yos for the weekend. Got all dirty, scraped up, sweaty and even got a case of rope burn on my left hand. Then got up Monday morning and literally left Camp 4 and drove straight back to work in LA (I work at 2:30pm, got on my station's lot at 2:15 :D ). Threw on a fresh top and kept the Prana capris on. No time to get home to shower or anything. Went into the ladies room before my shift to at least wash my face and hands. Strangely enough, no one at my work believed that I'd just rolled into work from 2 1/2 days of dirty, sweaty fun (and it helped that I don't get b.o. and my hair was actually behaving despite sleeping in dirt for 2 days). I guess I do Dirt Barbie well.

Wow, I could not get away with that! After a day I'm looking like a "Dirt Barbie" And it doesn't matter how many layers of deodorant go on, after a few days the smell just seeps through.

I am, of course, a Dirt Skipper... the old-skool Skipper with no boobs... and I KNOW I get stinky (I got da funk... better have dat funk) after climbing. Sometimes I care, sometimes I don't. But to be honest, it's hard NOT to notice or care when your funk is eminating from polypro or capilene

Nonetheless, I am neither girly nor tomboy. I, like many who take up climbing, have never fit neatly into any kind of social "category." :P

Me too! I had an extensive Barbie doll collection and loved to play dress-up, yet I went through this long phase where I absolutely HATED the color pink...and if ANYONE told me I threw like a girl or any other "girly" comment, I would take it personally! I would intimidate the guys so much when I was little...who wouldn't be intimidated by a little 5 year old girl who would wrestle and beat 2nd & 3rd grade boys? ...and the guys are STILL intimidated!

wow..that sounds almost exactly like me.

I would intimidate the guys so much when I was little...who wouldn't be intimidated by a little 5 year old girl who would wrestle and beat 2nd & 3rd grade boys? ...and the guys are STILL intimidated!

I did that too!! I grew fast and early. I could arm wrestle boys and win, outrun and outskate them...I was the only girl ever voted onto my school's 5th grade all-star hockey team (grew up in Minnesota). And I played starting center!!

Then around 6th-7th grade the boys started growing taller and stronger. And by then I'd "blossomed" into a definite female. By 7th grade, the boys I'd run track with in grade school would now loiter around the girl's track team practice and make lewd comments about our newfound bustlines while running. Boys can be so cruel sometimes  .

I do both Girly Girl and Tomboy.

Like so many of you that posted, I played mostly with the boys while young. I could ran as fast if not faster than them, ride a wheelie as far, make as many touchdowns, climb to the highest branch the fastest, hold my breath the longest and the list goes on.

Then one day we began to change. Instead of catching football passes I was fending off passes or taking them up their passes. I didn't play with barbie and friends until all this started to change.

I love my husband when he says you don't have to wear make up to be beautiful and don't shave your legs for me. What a man. My makeup if you want to call it that takes five minutes. I can get ready for work in 15 minutes.

I love it when I'm camping, hiking, climbing or at summer camp with my church's youth group. No make-up!

But still I love to dress up for special occasions. For our last anniversary I actually bought a whole outfit. I rarely ever do that. Halter top, skirt, shoes, matching fun purse. We went to one of our local steak houses. Our waitress was one of our climbing friends. We had a private booth. She said everybody wanted to know who we were and why the special treatment and what were we doing behind that closed curtain. I was catching passes . . .

Ok ok .. I am more of a tomboy ...
but strangly enough always find myself in nurturing proffession where the other women and sometimes men find me odd.
my first profession I was a hairdresser in ohio... they made me wear make up .... I rebelled most of the time
then I moved out west (were I belong) and was a wilderness guide for a while...
put myself through college for the first time ...
now am a RN ( yup real nurse) and am actually going on a trip to france this week to attempt Mt Blanc.... will only be there for a 8 days and my coworkers cannot believe I am not going to Paris,.,...
and are making me promise I will buy some french langerie.... until I found the price tag on this stuffl,,,,,, no way

but I am gettig a custom made mountain bike being made for me ... and the finish is going to be sooo cool a sky blue background with black flames leading into flowers!!!! flames and flowers... tuff but girly!!!

didn't seem to impress the gals at work but my guy friends dig it ...
so the bottom line is no matter how much of a tomboy I am I dont' want to to loose touch with my femine side....
by the way if there are any gals who are looking to go climbig in Oregon southern or central pm me!!

I just read through a few pages of this thread - it was so up front about who they are. My non-climber friends are starting to notice that I wear the same pants all the time - I have like seven pairs of Verve black strech pants. I just don't want to waste the time thinking about what to wear in the morning. Now granted they are all in various states of holiness (read holey-ness). But I will say I like wearing mascara - its a habit and I dye my hair blonde. But if I weren't a school teacher in a conservative town it would be pink one month and blue the next. While clothes can be a personal expression of creativity I also wear what I feel like - so sometimes I wear really sexy shirts because I feel really sexy and I am comfortable with my own sexuality - other times I wear all black because I like the visual expression of blackness. I don't think most people get it but when I see other women breaking out and expressing themselves whether its baseball caps or funky hippie clothes - I think it so cool. I don't want to be limited by a stereotype of sporty athletic girl anymore than I want to wear panyhose ever again in my life. I love my heels but I can walk in mine - just as much as I love my tennis shoes and my clogs. In other words I want to be a barbie with purple hair and screwed up toe nails and other days I want to go artsy fartsy second generation hippie all in black.

What defines a girly girl or tomboy? I played with Barbies as a child--had the big doll house and every thing. I only hung out with girls and thought all boys had the cooties until I reached adolescence. My favorite clothes are dresses. Have more shoes than I know what to do with, and lady at the makeup store knew my name and used to send me birthday cards. Love to get dressed up and go out to clubs (although residence is in Cleveland now, and the clubs here are kinda scary). Really, my favorite bar in LA was the Beauty bar where you get a drink and a manicure for 10 bucks. As my toes were cramping from climbing shoes this weekend, I thought, "may be I should paint my toes shiny silver..."

But I guess I have always been active. I play some sports and love the outdoors. I'm not afraid to get dirty and think showers are overrated especially when camping. Most of the times I prefer free camp grounds without running water (probably because I'm poor/cheap). You would never believe my first paragraph if you met me from climbing 'cause I look like the death itself while climbing.

Never considered myself a tomboy. I would never call myself tomboy 'cause I hate the fake ones. You know, the ones who are just like me, but pretends to be 'one of the boys' just to get close to the boys?

But I admire the real tomboys because they tend to be really cool and great climbers (Not to diss the girly girls). So all the tomboys out there, don't hate us girly girls....we can't help being who we are :D

I've always been a tom boy, but it runs in the family!
my mom was one, even my grandma and great aunt were tom boys (played a damn good game of baseball in a skirt!!! - you wouldn't believe it just like 'a league of their own')

So in a LONG line of tough women I have to hold my own! he he :D

I never played with barbies unless you count stealing my big sisters, giving them butch hair cuts and coloring on them with markers.

I would much rather be out collecting bugs and snakes and making mud pies any day . . .
wait come to think of it . . that's exactly what I did this weekend? .......................................

Gender: female

Persona type: I've got two older brothers and have realized after many many many years of intro-spection, awareness and aculization, I am a my own epitome living/breathing oxymoron.

I've been told by my guy friends, she's not a girly girl but she's a girl; she's a cool chick but not really a girl; and/or she's not your typical girl *fill in blank comment*

By my girl friends, definitely active - none of my very close friends or even climber chickie girls call me on or the other; usually, across the board, I'm called crazy (I like to call it unique).

That said, I like adventure but certainly set my known limits. I choose quality over quantity and apply it to my life in different forms. I like dressing down and very causual; I like being me. If one day I look like some super hottie, then cool - I can look or act just the same in my ubercool pjs (snoopy bottms and an atari t-shirt) and think about how I want to decorate for my next party (a tea party for my climber friends - thinking a spin of tapas and bevies).

My point. I like getting dressed up at times and down most. I get dirty and stinky; my shit smells awful but I have a super infectious smile (well to myself at least).

I think I am definately a half and half mix of both. I still like to dress up, do my hair and what is left of my nails (climbing has taken over my hands). But I always liked to do sports, play in mud, and help my dad around the house, fixing whatever needed to be when I was a kid. I am definately the most tom-boyish of all me and my sisters. Hung out with the boys when I was little and still do for the most part. I'll climb hard but I will still let out a girly yelp on a big fall. :D

I think that illustrates the paradox that is me quite nicely.

This poem is about Mt. biking... but I like how it illustrates this dichotomy.

Office Girl
by Hohna Cass
(published in Dirt Rag Magazine)

Meetings and small talk - professionalism
Cubicles, gray walls - is she in prison?
No, this is her life, why she longed to be old
when she was still young, she made this her goal
Office Girl.
But outside these halls is a chance to be free
No walls, no ceilings, just fresh air to breathe
Soaring downhill on her own two wheels
Her spirit flies with the freedom it steals
Every climb up means a chance to race down
Over rocks, over roots, past trees, through the mud
She's no Office Girl, she's "Office Girl Stud"
Monday morning finds Office Girl back in her chair
Coiffed and perfumed for the usual fare
She plays the work game like everyone does
But she's no slave to the water cooler buzz
She works by the hour, for the moments of power
When Office Girl wheels past the world in a blur
Office Girl Stud - that's her

Mindaa, I love the poem...illustrates this dichotomy real well indeed. :D

As far as how I feel on this topic, I am not one to conform to labels of any sort so I would say neither, even if I could pick one I wouldn't. 8^) But since you asked, I'll tell you that most people peg me off as a Girly Girl, but they couldn't be more wrong. Now, I'm not much of a Tomboy either so I'll just have to say that, I too fall in the middle grounds... :)

This is the perfect question for me! I'm still in a huge identity crisis with this. :D

I'm a retired professional ballerina of the Russian Kirov Ballet. My favorite color has and always will be PINK. Up until about three years ago, my biggest concern was my weight! I'm not sure how much more girly a girl can get. (no comments please!)

I started climbing a little while back and fell in love with the sport. Now instead of dresses and skirts I wear cargo shorts and some half worn out T-shirt. My hair has gone from a tight bun in the back, to a messy pony tail that won't stay out of my face. My biggest concern is how the heck I'm going to make it to the top of this 5.9!!!

LIFE, is all together strange. I think I'm liking this whole Dirt Barbie thing...

I would say I am a girly tomboy. I love getting dressed up to go out and have fun, yet I love sports, climbing and love wearing the capris sport top and messy hair. I would never wear make up or try to look pretty going to the crag, when I'm at the crag I don't mind not showering for the couple days i'm there. But on the other hand, if my boyfriend and I are going out, then I will make sure I look my best :)

I'm definitely a weird mix of both. When people first look at me, they assume that I am one of those fragile girly girls because I'm very tiny and very fair. I see myself as more of a guy than a girl and behave like it, although I have some girly quirks too, like wearing mascara, being terrified to death of frogs, lizards and falling and sometimes, just SOMETIMES, I actually dress up, but I'll usually spoil the effect of nice clothes by wearing really battered Tevas with them. I keep my hair long but only because it makes keeping cool easier, just tie it up in a ponytail and it's all good. Being a girly girl is an acquired trait for me, I'm more comfortable with behaving like a guy.

Well I prefer the dirt barbie. To me a girly girl wouldn't be ABLE to go a day without a shower. I think A LOT of you that posted are not girly girl just because you like shoes or dressing up when the occasion calls for it. Most of you aren't tom boys either, just girls that like doing acive stuff (which society often tells us are masculine). Thats what I love about this 'dirt barbie' term, a girl who is feminine and physical. oh and someone was asking about dirty=sexy, personally the dirt isn't whats sexy, its the athleticism (A sweaty girl jogging is way sexy to me and not for the whole 'baywatch effect' reason). Oh and by the way you mainland climbers are so lucky to have plenty of rock and other climbers around. Not so here in hawaii.......dirt barbies are very hard to come by.

I have to agree with calliope on this one...here I am at work (yes I know...bad me) wearing makeup and what not.
Yes, I like to go shopping, shoes are fun and new clothes are nice.
I don't like footballs, baseballs, etc being thrown at my face (bad experience when I was 11...still haven't forgotten about it)
Love climbing...love the way dirt feels on my fingers...don't mind chalk in my hair....
So not really a tomboy...but i guess dirt barbie is a good word for me.

First, I apologize for busting in, but when I saw the subject title I had to laugh. "Dirt Barbie"--This fits my 7 year old daughter perfectly. This past weekend she finished her second real rock climb (a 5.8 no less). Given her way, she prefers to go "commando" and shoeless (unless climbing). You almost have fight to get her in the tub, but she does clean quite nice and does like a pretty dress once in a while. She prefers climbing (just built a climbing wall for her to practice on, complete with a 11 foot tall chimney); bike riding, camping, tae kwon do, and most "guy sports stuff". You will seldom see her playing with dolls and such. She will gladly show off her scratches and bruises and explain in great detail where each came from. And oh, I can tell some really funny stories, like her running down a wilderness beach (less than commando) yelling "I'm free.....I'm free' and I won't even mention what she did with her brother's shirt!

She is definitely quite the girl, an up and coming brethren to the climber girls club!

I'm also the dismay of my mother a girly now senior citizenwho has never even pumped her own gas!! I went through a hippie granola stage in college when I didn't even shave. Most have us have never even seen the hair under our arms and I was really curious what color it was. (reddish) Strangely enough I didn't have too many boyfriends at that time. I think tomboy has more to do with taking risks than the way you look. There is that go for itness that boys in their early 20's have when they think that they'll never get hurt. A lot of us never really let go of fear or maybe it's self preservation enough to find out what we're capable of.

As a girl I loved camping and hiking and when I was out I'd scramble any rock my dad would let me (far more than my mother aloud). I played basket ball and permed my hair. I wore Holly Hobby clothes that I made.

My sister and I had a row boat that we'd take through a swamp that we had to break the branches off of trees to get the boat through, really cool place when it was foggy out. Our barbies were tough, making roads and houses out of mud and bark, and Ken was their slave. We spent a lot of time in the woods around our home and behind my grandmothers. I rode bikes and horses.

I do put on the wild girlie clothing with the heals. I can paint my face depending on my mood. I either dress wild and fun (for work or "going out") or causal and ready for fun. I finally asked my hair lady, last year, how to use mouse and gel and all that stuff- 'cause I had no clue and I figured if I'm going to have a professional life I should play with it and see if I like any of it.

I have been wearing heals since sixth grade- I played kick ball in them, and did so in such a way you would all be proud. I now have knees that are paying for it- so I'm in the process of training myself out of them.

My parents almost think I'm perfect. And so far I think my daughter is perfect, except I had to rely on my 13 year old niece to teach her that having combed hair makes you prettier and that that is important.

Never considered myself a tomboy, and I've always been conscience that I am not a normal girl.

wow-can't believe this link!!!! i live in LA, and where ARE all you cool chicks?!?! don't get me wrong, i have some terrific female friends that are pretty athletic, but when i do outdoorsy stuff, it's almost always just with the guys. if any of you are up for doing some tomboyish stuff with another one...feel free to drop me a line.

funny how i see so much of myself reflected in all of your posts...also i like the dirty barbie term, although it doesn't fit me very well. unless they've come up with one that looks like an athletic asian woman (and as long as it doesn't say "math is hard.")

actually, that brings up an interesting question, would you consider yourselves to have more feminist leanings than the girly girls you know?

peace.

feminism is just wanting equality for women...in pay, opportunities, respect, etc. i was referring to people's reactions to many of the attitudes that make it harder for women to achieve these types of things. i.e. what was your reaction to the fact that a barbie was made that said "math is hard" and "let's go shopping." not that math can't be tough or that i don't like shopping now and then, but i personally find it annoying when women and especially little girls are encouraged to follow a stereotype that belittles their abilities (either mental or physical) and puts them into a mold.

it seems this forum fits that discussion...the fact that few of us really fit the mold of what has been set up as the stereotyped woman. we all seem capable of dressing up and being a "hot babe," but only if we WANT to, and you all seem to be strong, self-assured, adventurous folks. most people i know like this tend to be more sensitive to how women as a whole are perceived and portrayed. thus, i'm curious to see what you folks think about gender roles and whether or not you think you have more feminist leanings than most of the girly girls you know.

whew, long clarification!

I'm neither girly nor tomboy, I'm a strong, confident, intelligent woman who is equally comfortable dressed up/cleaned up or dressed down/dirty. Does this make me a feminist? I think that word means different things to different people. I don't like politics, and "feminism" implies political activism to me. However, I do recognize there are certain stereotypical gender specific differences in communication style that can handicap a woman in a predominantly male work environment if not recognized and addressed. I think the fact that I am a physician has automatically brought me a degree of professional respect.

I was raised to believe I could do anything I wanted to, and to value intellectual achievement. I was also raised to value nature and the outdoors, particularly the mountains. My "barbies" were Wonder Woman, Cher, and Brenda Breyer (horseback riding doll) - so I suppose even my dolls were career women of sorts. My favorite toys were legos - you could build all sorts of neat stuff with those.

This is not to say my formative years were completely smooth sailing. I was a "geek", not a "popular kid" (I didn't go to my senior prom), had my share of body image issues and teenage mood swings. It took me a while to bring my physical and emotional selves in focus with my intellectual self; I have only just recently become fully comfortable in my skin. It's a continual evolution, but I feel my challenges have always been more internal than external, that is, I don't feel societly has particularly limited me because of my gender.

I dated a chick who was a jock one time, she had a six pack and worked out all the time. She would wear workout clothes or jeans and t-shirt or a dress and look hot in all of them. I appreciate it when a girl can not worry about all the crap that a lot of girly girls do, but it's nice when they dress up. I live in west texas and work at a scrap yard(kind of yard manager), I wear steel-toe boots, wranglers, denim button up shirt, and cowboy hat. All of that and my beard and I look about 5 years older than I am, and all the old good ole boys see me as one of them. It's not until I'm in camo shorts, t-shirt, beard, cowboy hat, and climbing shoes (this weekend out of town forgot tennis shoes and had to walk around town a few hours in my climbing shoes, i really wanted to cry after a while) that those good ole boys give me bad looks and mutter something about "Damn hippy." But then sometimes, only sometimes, I leave the cowboy hat at home, throw some gel in my hair, and put on some nice clothes. Only problem is I offset this all with my only three choices of footwear worn tennis shoes, steeltoe workboots, flipflops. Maybe that's the reason I don't have a girlfriend. :?

I would consider myself as an intelligent woman. I love to learn and am currently in college with an ultimate goal of becoming a psychiatrist. I consider myself a tomboy yet I still love to dress up and go out for a night on the town. I am comfortable in jeans and camping and climbing in the wonderful outdoors and am also comfortable being taken out for a night on the town to enjoy the richer things in life. :D

I think of myself as a girlie girl for sure. I like wearing cute outfits climbing and I like my toenails polished. I am a clothing buyer so I go to NYC 3 times a year to fashion shows. My stack of magazines is Vogue, WWD, Lucky, Glamour, Rock and Ice, Urban Climber, and Climbing. :)
I hate all the scars I have from Mountain Biking (that is why I stopped). I hate how my feet smell after being in my climbing shoes. I like make-up and nice hair, and gucci sunglasses.

But sometimes my girlie girl friends are appalled at me not taking a bath for a week, or pooping in the woods (or porta-potty if available) or licking chocolate off my dirty hands. While my climbing friends think I am way to prissy and high maintainence on road trips...because I like my starbucks and I do go find a shower after 5 days and I don't like dirt in my tent.

im a "torn jeans" on the bottom.. frills on the top type girl.

I'd have to say im a bit more of a tomboy... but i still get the heeby jeebies over things that most girly girls would get :P

Hard to climb too if your all about your nails :S
Although some would argue that rockclimbing is a manicure in itself... my nails always look more nicely rounded after climbing. hehe

I'm definitely a tomboy. Jeans and a hoodie for me. Last time I wore makeup or curled my hair was at my wedding... but I still had Chacos on(they were white). And as soon as the ceremony was over I put on my carhartts and a hoodie for the reception.... What can I say, it was cold!!!

feminism is just wanting equality for women...in pay, opportunities, respect, etc.

If this is the definition we're using then yes, I'd have to say I am. But I think the way to get it all is to just go out and do what you want to do. If a woman wants to stay home and raise 6 girls, and she gets to do that- than she is a feminist. Right? We should respect her. I have no respect for the girl that becomes vice president of her dad's company and does a crappy job.

As to Barbie and Math. Funny how much math I teach both my daughter and my son while baking and shopping. In fact when my daughter was 8 and stressed out about the school year because she was going to learn how to divide- I said "How many rows of cookies will you have if I don't want any more than 12 cookies on the tray and you have 3 cookies in a row?" She thought for a second, and said "4." I said "Their, you just divided." She was stunned.

Math is hard, it's not like learning to walk or breath. Reading is hard too (just go volunteer in your local 1st grade). I think Barbie was right to go shopping if she thought Math was hard. What a fun way to learn!

My point is that I avoid getting caught up in what is feminist or not, because I want each person to live up to their potential- with their gifts. If you are stereotypical in any way- well their may be good reason for it. But stereotypes should not hinder anyone to do or not do what they want to do.

(I realize that I may not have actually answered the question on hand. But these are my thoughts. I do think it an excellent question. But I know a few Good Girlie Girls that you could consider feminist with the above definition.)

Live Happy. Be Strong.

a buddy of mine even gave me a tshirt she found on the web that says "Dirt Barbie" and has a pict of a barbie doll complete with harness, shoes, trad gear, helmet and rope (thanks dirt debbie)...
uh, is it really painting your toe nails when you do it to keep them from cracking because your technical shoes are tight??????
i also know a couple of guy climbers that do that so does that make them "Dirt Ken"?

i tossed all my skirts several years ago and haven't looked back. growing up, all tomboy - i was raised by my dad and had one brother. i SO coveted his hand-me-downs. i can go to school wearing something and go straight to the gym and climb in it. if i have to get fancy, i have the Maxazaria suit, silk shirt, etc. i don't know any women who climb who are what i would call "girly" - that brings to my mind the annoying chattery sorority type who talks too loudly on her cell phone in public places, all the while wearing her rainbow flip flops, pink polo shirt and short denim skirt.

Pink in climbing is a fashion statement. It states "I think everybody would look better in flamboyantly colored lycra".

I used to dance for 10 years (but was not nearly of the caliber that lil rockgirl clearly was). Although the trappings that surround female ballet dancers may seem girly (especially if you're doing 18th century choreography), I think ballet is way hardcore. Ballet was more physically and mentally demanding than any other sport I ever played. Teachers could also be meaner than any coach I ever had.

Ballet involves sweating your ass off, f*cking your feet up (climbers should try stuffing their feet into toe shoes someday...climbing shoes will feel heavenly), and just pushing your body to the limit most days. It's a contact sport too...I've gotten kicked, hit in the face, dropped, you name it. Contemporary choreography requires you to often roll around on a dirty floor too. Yeah, it could be totally hardcore...just minus the dirt and rope grime.

Women need to stop putting themselves in a box. I refuse to be labeled. I live in two worlds and move between them with ease. I like wearing skirts just as much as zip-off pants. I even own two pairs of FM shoes (you know, those heeled kind of shoes that just say "F*ck Me"). Scrapes, bruises and scars accompany the shoes on most days.

There is no dichotomy to being who you are.

I'm in a sorority.
I love rainbow flip flops
And if I'm not climbing or at work, I live in my denim skirts in the summer.

I'm not trying to argue with you or anything, but it seems ridiculous that in climbing, there's really only one type of female that's acceptable.

Some people would say that sororities are like that, but I've found girls in the sororities at my college to be exponentially more open minded than a fair portion of the climbing community.

For ex., why should people think I'm not sincere about learning to climb just because I wear polos, or am in a sorority or what-have-you?

I understand that a Greek Letter wearing, rock climbing chick is rare, I just wish the climbing community at large was more open to the idea of such a person...
You would be amazed how many people think I climb to impress some guy...or am simply cracked out. no pun intended. Pirate
