i am doing an thing for english and i need your opinion on this. actually, im in english right now so if anyone has an opinion could you tell me what it is and why you think that. also if anyone has a link to that aberchrombie and fitch climbing video that would be very helpfull. thanks.

Personally, I think it a bit odd, particularly since A&F has nothing to do with the outdoors whatsoever, really. Seems that it's more of a "Hey, let's try and present ourselves as cool and cutting edge since our market shares and popularity are dropping off" ploy than an actual interest in the sport itself. I don't know too many climbers who give a rat's ass about fashion or clothing beyond its durability on a cliffside.

I don't know about the "no one cares except for durability". Has anyone looked at Prana or Ropegun clothes lately? Or Patagonia?! I can get better deals by buying off of A&F's sale rack! And the durability is BS. I can buy many things that last as long as Prana for about 40 dollars less.

lol, my shirts from fred meyer last until they begin showing great amounts of skin through the holes. I've never been one who cares about clothes. My clothes last as long as they last, and are as cheap as I can find them.

I still say all you Prana wearers, Patagonia hipsters shouldn't say anything about any fashion. It's just climber fashion, and it happens to cost twice as much as the GAP.

My wardrobe is about 75% prana (that is, 3 days out of 4 and 3 garments out of 4, not just my casual or climbing clothes). Most expensive item was probably like some $12 pants or a $15 sweater.
Prana outlet sale rules. For the price, the quality is totally exceptable, and I find their clothing to be (mostly) pretty comfortable.
Comparable to or cheaper than target/marshalls/etc and I like it mo' better, simple enough

Sharma could be an A&F model anyway... just happens he's also one of the best climbers in the world.
What A&F is doing is not bad, but of course climbers will deem it totally uncool.
For no other reason than they like to think of themselves and their pursuit as "outside the societal norm."
When A&F uses a good looking and hella badass climber to promote their products, it puts climbing square in the middle of the norm, middle america.
This is why no one here will support it.
Personally, I think that Sharma done good for himself when he did A&F. He has every right to make money off endorsement deals like any pro athlete.
I will not however, buy A&F clothing.

A&F would do a great job sponsoring naked climbers ... they seem to advertise NOT wearing clothes extremely well!! I'm sure there would be some takers out there!!

you know though, for those of you who have ever wanted to be a professional climber, if some of the bigger names gets into it two things wil happen:
1.your chances are higher because of the demand
2.you might actually get paid decently for it
definitely not cons if you ask me.

One big difference between A&F and patagonia is that patagonia uses organic coton and recycled plastic to make their clothes, and they donate 1% of all sales to various environmental or access causes. Their stuff is also not made in sweat shops.

Didn't A&F start out as a surf company, or do they just put that on the clothing to add "authenticity"? The only prana clothing I own are a long sleeve T I got for free, and another T-shirt that I put a Prana iron-on logo on. All of my patagonia stuff I got through "connections." Meanwhile, when I go to the gym, everybody's wearing prana stuff as if to prove they are where its at. I'm tempted to wear the pants I hacked into shorts on a climbing trip just to one up them.

I'm probably not one to talk, because util I started climbing, I bought the majority of my clothes at thriftstores... wait! I still do. Heh! I probably buy fewer clothes now, I just spend a significant portion of my clothing budget on things like Capilene shirts and organic cotton shorts from Patagonia. It's not hard to drop a hundred dollars on a few items at the prices they go for. I wouldn't have considered paying the equivalent on Abercrombie and Fitch wear, but knowing that there is something significant about Patagonia's craftsmanship and it's ethics makes me willing to spend those extra dollars (well, if it's on sale, that is).
Anyway, as far as Abercrombie sponsering climbers - it's sorta silly, but, hell, I have nothing against it. Why not sponsor me?

o.k., so only 'true' climbing suppliers should be allowed to sponser climbers? if i was hard enough to go for sponsorship, i would not give a crap where the money came from (within reason, i'm not a malborough man) so long as i was paid to climb!
and so what if climbing is being used to market as a 'cutting edge' type of extreme sport? i have seen deodorant adds using climbing for a while now. chances are adds for non climbing stuff using climbing are not going to induce climbers to buy the stuff, it is going to be all those poor saps out there that want to be climbers that get suckered in

It just happens to be that one of my favorite pair of climbing pants is from A&F. I've put em through hell and back bouldering and theres not even a snag! It dosent hurt that I wear lots of A&F clothes as well. But if they wanna spot climbers money or clothes/gear, Im not one to say no!

Okay, okay - I know I am going to be crucified, but -- I think A&F has sexy, comfortable athletic wear. I buy their line of athletic wear for running, etc., and for casual climbing -- not a bad idea!!! Let's be a little open minded here, huh? Besides, it is still cheaper than some climbing wear I am used to seeing on the market! Just my thoughts.

I have to agree with jefesuave here. What's the harm in sponsoring some climbers? I would love to see more climbers sponsored!
Who knows, maybe it will actually help out with some young girls and boys who see athletes outside doing something active and looking fit instead of inhumnaly skinny girls and pumped up steriod-looking men who aren't doing much but not wearing much and usually in some sexually suggestive position.

May the A&F corporate whores burn in Hell! And may Tony the Tiger burn in Hell for using a climber in a Frosted Flakes ad as well! Real climbers eat only nuts and berries gathered on the way to the crag. We trade some of these to local vegan craftspeople in exchange for handwoven natural-fibre garments of the highest quality.
It's just an ad, folks.
PS. I hear Nike chiselled a new route up El Cap for Michael Jordan to climb while hocking their new line of shoes. Watch for the ad on your neighbour's TV's. As hardcore climbers, I know you would never own an idiot box yourselves.

it really bugs me, especially if they start making shirts that say "A&F Rock Climber" or something like that. I am also a runner and it always bugged me when people had AE or A&F "running" shirts on. They clearly were not runners, but were wearing designer gear that said they were. And personally I would not want to spend that much $$$ on something that I know is going to get roughed up on the rocks!! Their stuff could not take weekend on the rocks!
