I think it's less of an access issue, especially at a place like Jtree where it's less than quiet anyhow, and more of a safety issue since there is almostly always more than one party and hearing your partner can be an issue even when there isn't music. It's just common courtesy to leave it at home.

the real hidden valley is serene and beautiful. It would be easy for the NPS to shut down climbing there, just like the banned bolting (essentialy climbing) in the barker dam area...for tourists.

you will ruin access with music....yes you will.

Nah. Music won't affect access. The whole access threat is part of the trad taliban credo to stifle activity they don't like.

Now, a surefire way to avoid that pesky music listening white trash is to go somewhere that isn't n00b central (ie, NOT thin wall) that has more than a 5 minute walk from the road.

I've heard of such places, but have yet to uncover any. I tried searching last time I was at New Jack, but every time I thought I found one it turned out there was a parking lot on the other side of the rock.

If I wanted to hear crappy music while I'm climbing, I'd be climbing in a gym!

Too bad I got rid of my jam box ten years ago. If I hadn't, I'd bring Sonic Youth out with me every time. Cause that's the way i roll!

Out of the numerous statements above, the only one which is somewhat true is the "beautiful". The rest are fecking hilharious bullshit.

The reason I drive the 8 to 12 hours is to climb and be in Nature. I want to hear the birds, the wind in the trees, and my partner saying, "Watch me!"

Leave the jams at home, PLEASE. (Unless you are bouldering. You wear the beanie, you play the tunes.)

that's nice. i drive to the crag to climb, hang with friends, and have a good time. part of that is listening to music. we all have different reasons for climbing, just because you do it for nature reasons, doesn't mean i have to. if my music is too loud, i'll turn it down. but i'm not going to turn it off. when climbing, you have many obstacles to overcome, if music is the "crux", you got some problems.

There's bad logic. Sack up and deal with it. You just reached more people, but they aren't the problem. ONE group is the problem. Deal with it when you see it instead of hoping that someone else will deal with it for you. Was he/she really that scary? Pirate

This thread is a tribute to the fact that people (all-inclusive for one reason are another) are often inconsiderate of others.

Its all about me.

not everyone care for the artificial noise. and some do find music distracting to their climbing. if others are around, would be considerate if you ask them first if they might be cool with some tunes. if yes, great. if not, then don't. but like just about anything else, much easier just to do what serves you first and make other people go out of their way to ask you to stop

ah hell, what's a little noise pollution after you've already driven all that way out to the wall, polluting the air and damaging the ozone layer. i hear for every 1,000 miles driven, you're entitled to blast a full day of music at an outdoor venue of your choice. after every 10,000 miles, you get to chop down a tree. after every 100,000 miles, you get a coupon to go start a forest fire

So, what, you bicycle to the crag? At least air pollution is a more real issue than the hypothetical jam box crag takeover gripe.

I am more likely to move on or gripe among my partners than risk a confrontation. The bottom line to me is that my silence does not disturb others. Your music may or may not, but only they know.

It is, in old fashioned terms, rude to impose your version of outdoor life on others. Maybe only the old (and those well brought up by the old) understand this concept. I don't drive to hear bad rap, great ska, or even Beethoven at the crag. I drive to hear wind and birds and the occasional, "Watch me.. OFF!"

[In high dudgeon]You are wrong to think otherwise, as long as others are nearby. Yes, I did say "wrong" - the concept is still valid, even in the land of cell phone rings and open conversation in theatres.[/In high dudgeon]

actually, yes, i do bike to the one spot that's close enough to climb. crappy seaside rock. but that's the one spot i can get to on a bike

air pollution is a bigger issue than a lot of things. but the appropriate comparison is "driving to climb and leaving a mess" versus "driving to climb and not leaving a mess," that or between "driving to climb and doing noise pollution too" versus "driving to climb without doing the noise pollution." but guess that's for people who can think straight

I also bike to a local crag. But I will gladly pollute my way to the better climbing. Does constant beta count as noise pollution, because I think I'll take the Steely Dan.

I hate Steely Dan... but would take them over the Kibitzers any day. Those people need to be shot.

However, I have yet to hear anyone shout more beta than the guides in Thailand.

You always have to read the fine print. One time I was laid up for a week on bed rest because of a concussion, so I went to video store to get something to keep myself entertained. I saw The Never Ending Story, and figured that's all I'd need. Boy was I surprised when it ended after two hours.
