I am surprised at the low number of First Responders. The course, in my experience, provides lots of good info in a very short period of time and for relatively low cost. (Compared to EMT, WFR, Medic, etc…)

Here's a question: How have people found it easiest to suggest to partners that they get some training?
I don't really say anything at all unless it comes up in conversation along with their assertions that they don't know much about it. Then I say something like, "It's not as though accidents in climbing are unheard of. You should get certified. I've needed my training on several occasions."

EMT 26 years and climbing longer than that. Someone earlier mentioned airway, control bleeding and spinal immobilization. I think that adding a cell phone to the list will go a long way towards doing the right thing for an injured climber. If you can't stabilize the airway or stop the bleeding, the rest is useless. My personal philosophy is simple, if I can't fix it with cloth tape or by hands on, you're dead or dying.

Ummm, Senior Lifeguard many years ago.
LOL If I'm hurt I'll pass on the fist aid!
Seriously though, I've had CPR/First Aid many times over the last 15 years. Also, psuedo first responder training when I worked inside the chemical plant. The hardest thing is keeping a cool head and recalling what you know. I've been unfortunate enough to witness some bad accidents but I held it together, then freaked later when I had time to take it all in.

I took a WFR course in 2003 and I've been working as an EMT-B for over a year. Other than stabilizing the spine, stopping major bleeding, calling for help and the ABC's I don't think there's much I can do out there.
I've been fortunate to not need any medical training in my climbing career. I did find a girl at the base of a climb in josh with what I think was a broken ankle, and I broke a bone in my hand while climbing once, but in both instances it was tough it out and work around the problem til you can get to medical care.

Yeah a few. LOL Some expired, some not. I honestly hate climbing with anyone that doesn't have some sort of formal education when it comes to injuries/medical needs.

I think everyone should take BLS (Basic Life Support) at least once. Everyone in the whole world. Every climber would do well to know a little Wilderness First Aid, but I don't think we can expect every dirtbag to put up the green for that. Maybe nice climbing gyms should offer it to members or something.
