I know, I know, this is a little lame. but I am curious as to celebrities that climb. Not Sly, or Tommy Cruise; not guys who have played climbers. but famous people who actually climb. I saw Brendan Fraser in Rockreation once, but have not known any "famous" people who climb. I am thinking beyond movie stars as well. Maybe a local newscaster, Mayor, writer, doesn't matter the degree. Just curious. Blur

I think Tom Brokaw was in the most recent Outside magazine. He's apparently into alpine hiking, etc. Not sure if that counts, but I thought it was pretty cool.

In fact, Tom Brokaw has climbed the Grand Teton. I'm not sure by which route, though. Anyway, that's a bit more than alpine hiking--even if it was just the Owen-Spaulding route. Curt

I'm pretty sure David Lee Roth climbs/climbed. Actually, if you look at the cover of his Skyscraper album, that is most definitely climbing, and i'm pretty sure it's him too. (not the greates album cover though...)

(not the greates album cover though...) My roommate didn't realize that this was a freestanding album and insisted that we check it out. I told him I'd die before I purchased a David Lee Roth CD and that there was no associated movie to go with it.

Now I can convince my family that climbing is not nuts. They are serious motorsports fans. There are pictures of Dale, Richard, and Mikey Schumacher in the living room. Brokaw did the Grand, Now I am even more impressed. Thanks, Curt. I will forgive those of you who have disparaged the name of one of Rock n Roll's greatest frontmen ever because I forgot about David Lee Roth and the Skyscraper cover on Lost Arrow Spire. Good call Tarzan 420. Any more? Blur

In reply to: In reply to: athelete? we are talking about car racing right? "Athlete: A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts." Driving 500 miles in a hot car at 180mph while 6 inches from the other cars without having time to pee... and winning... seems to qualify. Many years ago one of the networks had a show where athletes from a number of sports competed against each otehr in a number of events. Peter Revson (driver) was on one year and either won or came close. I remember that he ran faster than a number of NFL players and was pretty strong as well. So, I'll agree that whatever it takes to race a car successfully is what it takes to be an athlete.

You can tell the guy who directed Cliffhanger was a climber. He lent Sly Stalone his bolt gun, which shoots bolts into solid rock...

David Lee Roth is cool for his paramedic gig in NYC. And if paying Ron Kauk to string a rope across the Lost Arrow gap and then jugging on that rope makes a celeb a climber, then DLR is a climber. I think he was guided up some other stuff too, out in Josh etc. Hell, maybe he really did do some climbing. DMT
