Just the other day me and body were climbing. I get to the top, set up an anchor and he starts to climb and clean the gear. As he gets to the top 3 women walk by and start talking about us: First woman: They are idiots Second woman: Looks like he knows what he is doing, he's got two ropes. I just died loughing. Later I thought: If I only had one rope that would make me a MORON. Has anything similar happend to you ?

"but how do you get the rope up there in the first place?" a dollar for every time I heard that would be nice.

My brother was a river guide in Utah, he got a few good ones: Why do they build ruins? Why do they build ruins so far from the roads? Do we end up back here? For climbing though, for some reason, "How long did it take?" seems to be popular.

A few of my favorites: "Why would you want to do that to a perfectly good rock?" "What did the rock do to you to deserve that?" "What are the clippy things for?" And everyone has heard this one: After informing many people I am a ROCK climber, "Have you done Everest?"

Jesus, coherency would be nice. If it is stupid things that are being sought out, then perhaps one ought to look to the poor excuses for writing that nearly seem to be the norm on this site.

my climbing partner was coming back from a climb. still having his harness on (got caught in some rain) some people who passed him asked if he had just gone skydiving...? his reply, "yeah, i went skydiving. i wear all of this metal so i can fall faster." i'm still chuckling over that one.

there is a difference between stupidty and ignorance... since most folks do not climb, when they see it and say something about it, it can usually be called the latter... dont badmouth someone simply because they do not know. instead, you would do better to educate them...

I asked one of my coworkers if he felt like going to the climbing gym with me, which happens to be all of 5 minutes away. He explained that he couldn't take stupid, uncalculated risks like that anymore, since he now has a wife and two kids. He said I'd understand when I was his age and in a similar situation. Then he went for his daily 45 minute run around one of the least pedestrian friendly parts of San Francisco during rush hour. The logic escapes me.

yes, a lot of the questions (most of the time) are legit questions that we climbers just get so sick of we have to come up with whitty answers to find some amusement out of it. such as "how'd you guys get the rope up there?" what's frustrating is after explaining it to a tourist in Moab on Potash Road, after listening intently for 5 minutes he said "so basically the leader climber is risking his life for everyone else's pleasure? i'll never understand the logic of this sport" then he walked away and we went back to risking out lives leader climbing haha. some more legitimate questions are when i'm walking down the trail after rappeling with all my gear on people showing off for dates (always the best) asks "so you were rappeling up there huh? are there anchors or what?" to myself "no idiot, there aren't anchors, i threw my rope around a birds neck and hoped that it didn't fly away to fast"
