In my local REI, some person complained, and returned a empty chalk ball, saying the chalk dried his hands  (why he bought it in the first place, i dont know). And of course, he got $4 for it. Kinda makes you think about the people in this world. :?

I would like to add a little more to what was mentioned earlier: ignorance is not to be confused with stupidity. I don't think the OP intended to belittle anyone, but I have seen many climbers adopt the "we are better than them" attitude. Please do what you can to respectfully answer all questions that come your way (not always realistic when a busload of tourists show up at a place like Devil's Tower, Garden of the Gods or the Needles).
It never hurts for the public to have a positive attitude towards climbers, especially in situations where access or government funding come into question.

My fav was when I was blowing my ring out through a crux and an audience member yells

"Now would be a bad time to fall!"

I almost did, just so I could lower off a smack the smart $£@%

Many of our cragging areas are funded by the goverment through facilities like toilets, campsites and parking lots. Increases in use draw the attention of government agencies that decide how to deal with the situation, wether it be to restrict access, build the facilities mentioned above or hire staff to manage the area. I believe that money from the NPS goes towards the maintenace and replacement of fixed anchors at Devil's Tower and funds the search and rescue teams (correct me if I am mistaking)
I like being left alone to climb as I please, but I also recognize that climbers must interact positivley with other agencies if our use of public lands is to be seen as legitimate.

Although all of you make fun of these people they are just trying to learn. If somebody told me President bush was the greatest ever I would not want to just make fun of them, i would want them to know why i thought opposite of them and how I am correct. Don't make them fell stupid, they will then always think climbing and climbers are stupid, please dont make the rest of us look bad by laughing at tourists, they probably do something that we don't understand.

My climbing buddy and I were heading up the trail at Devils Tower, both of us fully loaded with rope and gear slings. A tourist looked at me and asked: "Are ya goin' climbin'?"

Another was by a very obese park ranger at the Tetons. The kind that would have trouble climbing 5 stair steps. We had over ten years experience and had just spent a month climbing in the Winds Rivers. We LOOK like we've been out a while. This ranger informs the route is temp. clsoed we might as well take our shiny gear back to Kansas. Relly pissed me off.

I reside in Iowa so i have heard a lot of silly stuff while climbing.
The best I have heard from a non-climber is that Bush is a good pres and we should support the War because its a good cause. i know it does not relate to climbing, but these non-climbers are just a little off-kilt.

since most folks do not climb, when they see it and say something about it, it can usually be called the latter...

dont badmouth someone simply because they do not know. instead, you would do better to educate them...

I have nothing against people who dont know anything about climbing, it just seems there are lots of people who claim to know alot, but couldnt be more wrong.

While working a birthday party at the rock gym, i told an 8 yr old kid he couldnt go on the bouldering wall (gym policy). I used the regular excuse that its an "expert only" area. The kid enthusiastically replied "But I am an expert, I climbed to the top of the wall at Hersey Park!"

Several Minutes Later, while trying to belay the kid (on a grigri), he told me he already knew how to use the "pulleys".

Ocasionally, some non climbers will see my rack, and start fondling the various cams and other pieces with moving parts. They of course ask, "how much did this stuff cost?". Most of the time it baffles them that a micro cam could cost as much as a 3 inch one. Seems like 2 year old logic to me.

Let's see... Here's my list.

"That seems like a lot of work just so you can rappell off of the top." As if that's my end goal.

"Do you place your own pitons and everything?" This one usually comes from the non-climber looking to awe you with their impressive knowledge of the sport.

"Will those cam thingies really catch you?" My answer: "I sincerely hope so!"

"How many pullups can you do?" This one is for Jay. I know he loves the pullup training.

"My (friend, brother, etc.) would be great at this. He works out all the time and is a 225lb mass of muscle." This one confounds me. Why isn't it obvious to people that weighing that much is a hinderance whether it's muscle or not?

And finally the only one that I find genuinely irritating: "Ouch my nuts. This harness is so uncomfortable. Ow, ouch, ooh." This one is usually the first time climber in the gym. Almost 100% of the time it is uttered in a loud howling voice, intended for others to hear, by someone between the ages of 15 and 19. He is most likely saying it because for some reason he thinks that it should hurt his nuts, plus it makes his buddies laugh or (he thinks) impresses his girlfriend. Of course when it is their turn his buddies follow suit. Get over yourself.

This thread pretty much covers it.

I especially like the story on page five of a climber telling a nonclimber that his long hold cleaner was a bear toothbrush.

How do you even respond to that...???

Gotta love this one. Said by a buddy of mine, in the most sincere way.

"I thought you had to be tall to climb rocks?"

(I'm only 5'3".)

and...

"You know there are easier ways to do that. Why do you think man created helicopters?"
