i hate it when you're in a big group of people and you're the only climber and somebody ask you a dumb question and you can't think of anything to say in response....then the group laughs at you because they think you are a fake. :x
but whatever....their loss.

If you´ve ever had to haul around a 70 liter (inches=?) emergency-yellow color bag filled with your stuff for a multiday outing, you´ve probably had to put up with people staring at you, thinking/saying:
a) some homeless dirt covered blood lathered hippie.
b) some dick teenager showing off his WAY too big backpack.
c) wtf is up with that guy?

Then there are the looks you get from losers who need to feel superior to you; I´m the one carrying my and my partner´s +50 lbs of gear for miles on end so I can go risk my life on a rock face a couple hundred feet up, but they could SO TOTALLY do the same thing!! :D

Then there are those who see you with an old biner for a keychain or something and, since their boy/girlfriend once went toproping, they are by association far superior to you.

Doesn´t really bother me until 1 is stupid enough to ask me on the crowded subway:
-"Hey, you DO know what those are called right??"
following my sarcastic "yes, they´re keychains, right??"
-they reply "pft! no!! (you-are-so-beneath-me tone of voice) They´re for climbing, like on rocks and stuff. Why do you even have that if you don´t know what it´s even for???"
I resist the urge to say STFU POSER and walk away, and reply "Ok, do YOU know what they´re called?"
-"They´re locks!! Pfft!"
I walk away...

Coming back from my trek in Pakistan, co-workers would ask where I've been.

"Pakistan", I replied.

"Huh, why would you go there?"

"theres beautiful mountains and the friendliest people on earth"

"Huh, theres mountains in Pakistan?"

or even better.
"so you climb? so you hammer those thingys in the rock right?"

Uh, not so much anymore...

It's obvious that non-climbers aren't familiar with the sport. The thing is that some people wanna be smart about things they know shit about.
Once a guy tried to convince me that lead climbing is soloing, cause the rope doesn't do you any good if it's not attached to smth at the top of the crag. He called me stupid for saying otherwise and left overconfident saying i know shit about climbing despite my years of experience
I just wanted to stuff the gri-gri up his ass...

hahaha i got this last night when i was talking about climbing with some lady,

be careful i know what you guys do, so i asked her how and she said that her son had been climbing at 4th form camp, i just smiled and replied that climbing was safe as when you knew what you were doing, but she insisted that climbing was incredibly dangerous, in the end i just said ok will do.

being an instructor, its funny how nonclimbers see the risk level as being way higher than it actually is,

good old perceived risk vs real risk, ilove it

I'm sure you could produce a plentitude of insightful questions about an activity you are not familiar with, as well.

Now that I can respond to!
Surfing takes place in... WATER!
Rain is composed of ... WATER!
When one goes surfing in WATER, they get - WET!!!

Jeez, that 'no child left behind' curriculum is beginning to show some serious weaknesses... Come on people, THINK before you speak :!:

Yes.....but what happens when you surf in the rain?

my guess is that you drown because you try to find the surface but you're still getting wet so you become disoriented and drown. I would expect it to quite dangerous, actually.

i got some that will beat all y'all. Come to the south and you will hear THE strangest things. For example, my brother and I were putting up new routes up at Chimney Rock, which is a huge tourist attraction (mostly Rustics) and this old, fat women said: "are you'ns killing rats?" I don't remember if i said anything in response... i mean what would you have said? Oh, and another great one is when people ask: "did you climb all the way from the bottom" I rather have just the stare any day than stupid remarks like that.

I can't remember if I posted some of this before or not.

I was on a bus in Yosemite and two climbers got on. They had overstuffed packs so you could see the rope peeking out. An old man sitting with his wife on the bus turned to her and said. "Those are climbers, they use crampons and ropes"

I was in Vedauwoo and two idiot rednecks (Vedauwoo is about 60% rednecks, 20%picknickers, 10% fee enforcement officials, 9% drunk teenagers, and 1% climbers) asked my what my crashpad was for. I gestured to the top of some formation and told them it was for jumping off the top. When they looked at me like I was nuts, I told them that mine was only rated for 40feet.

My husband was climbing an incline 5.8+ route and he was doing laps on it. This guy came in and saw him climbing. It was obvious that this guy worked out because his upper body was built. He said "ohh I can do that...give me the hardest route on the wall" .......The belayer tried to stop him ......in the end she ended up putting him on a 5.3 route and it killed him ........and all of us climbers were just sitting and laughing......He did that one route and was done! haaaaaaaaaaa

This event happened to a friend, but the story needed to be told:

I had a friend walking to a bouldering site that was frequented by day hikers. One of these inquisitive hikers stopped him to comment on his unique back-pack. My friend informed the hiker it was a crashpad used to protect him when he fell. But the hiker was still confused "what happens when you fall on your face?"
