It wasn't stupid, it was just very funy at the time.
I also went out of my way to inform the guy and his family what was going on and showed him what the pad/"backpack" is used for and offered him the chance to jump on a few problems....Then he looked at me like I just introduced him to running water and gave me a friendly "Hell No!"

Visitor without a clue: "Why is everone wearing those big funny looking backpacks?"

Why is that a stupid thing to say? Those things are pretty curious looking.

I was doing a vegetation study at the top of a cliff at 4000', had the tape measure and 1m quadrats out. This hiker walks by and says "Oh, are you doing an art project?" I wish I had a good comeback, but I was just so puzzled at the question, I just laughed.

Best I have ever heard:

While sitting on the Lion's Head lookout in Ontario, belaying Emilie up on Nimbus. Two tourists (couple) walk up and start some small talk about climbing, usual stupid stuff.

Emilie: "David Take!"
Female tourist: "There's a GIRL down there"
Me: "Ummm... yup"

Blew my mind when she said it... totally flabbergasted me.

Stepping into my co-op after finishing a four-day traverse of Mt. Olympus , none of the 'welcome home' or 'good to see ya back alive,' just a,
"Hey greasy, take a friggin shower, you dirty hippie..."

actually.... now that i think about it, that was pretty sage advice.

"but how do you get the rope up there in the first place?" a dollar for every time I heard that would be nice.

My answer everytime to this is now: "I fire a Crossbow"

A couple of guys I used to climb with had a few good ones come their way. Once, they had racked up and were walking down the trail to whatever local spot they'd chosen for the day when a tourist walked up and cheerfully asked them, "Out for a day of rappelling?"

On another occasion they were trying out some un-explored cliffs near highway 101 in SoCal when a CHP officer stopped and blared out over his PA system, "Disassemble your rappel unit and return to the ground immediately". I suppose if they did take the rap anchors apart, a descent to the ground would have been very immediate.

Yeah, I am all for not lording people's ignorance of the esoteric over them, but sometimes I feel like there are things that they should know:

"Is there a boulder up there that you climb or something?"
-on the descent trail between Whitehorse and Cathedral ledges (two enormous and prominent slabs of granite, in case you've never been there)

"What's that thing for?"
-an REI employee on my crashpad (in a store where crashpads are sold)

Got my answer for this question in R & I a couple years back. Now I just say,

"Oh this? It's just a Russian backpack"...

Usually they kind of look at me weird and continue their hike...

In reply to:
but how do you get the rope up there in the first place?

The really funny thing is, this is a totally reasonable question since there is no way in hell an ordinary non-climber person could hope to figure it out on their own. The idea of placing protection then climbing above it is a little unintuitive. The initia;l response I get when describing this is "then how exactly are you protected?"

At that point, they seem interested enough for a full detailed explanation which I love to give. So far, each layman that I explained it to, including my mom, walked away with totally understanding. At least understanding of the techniques. Not necessarily understanding of why I would do such a thing.

Descenting after a 3-day winter trip on Mt. Olympus we're 50m from the trailhead. 2-3 middle ages couples (the women in fur coats and high heels) have driven to the cabin by the trailhead and decided to walk in the woods.

-Wooman #1: Is it far?
-Me: What?
-Wooman #1: The mountain.
-Me:

-Wooman #2: (Pointing at my trekking poles) What are those for?
-Me: Well, I'm cleaning the trail from fallen leaves...
-Wooman #2: How nice of you!
----------------------------------
Not exactly climbing related: Me, my sister and two friends had just disembarked from the ship after our summer vacations on an island. We all had backpacks. Two girls were dragging their heavy suitcases next to us. One said to the other (thinking we are foreigners): look at those poor guys carrying all their stuff on their backs!!!

HAHA...my personal favorites!

While climbing a crack in OK.
This conversation happens almost every time I go to this place to climb.

Spectators sitting on the top of the crag.

Red neck #1 - What you boys doin down there?

Me - Rock climbing.

Red neck #2 - You boys gonna climb all the way up here?

My partner - Yes.

Red neck #2 again - All the way?

Me - Yep, all the way.

Red neck #1 - You boys know you can walk up right around there?

Me - Yup. ( I find that if I use a "Red Neck" accent with the "yup" it usually stops them cold).

But sometimes it doesn't so on it goes.

Long pause...

Red neck #2 - Why would you want to climb up here if you can walk up over there? (This is almost always asked after long deliberation...like it took a while for the thought to completely form in their brains).

My partner - I bet him a beer he couldn't do it.

At this point I usually have to look down cause I am laughing soo hard.

This usually stumps them cause they would like to ask another question but their brains are thinking "Beer, mmmm, I would like a beer."

Another of my favorites.

I am climbing and am usually about 1/2 way up.

Someone down below yells..."Are you guys repelling?"

If I wasn't so worried about a scene from deliverance happening I would let loose with the smart ass remarks.

I do agree that the things people say about climbing are hilarious, but definitely at least humor them with a legitimate answer.

It would be like you asking me what I do at school "My project is to study nitrate leaching under site-specific management zones that are delineated by AgriTrak in irrigated corn production systems", now some people might understand this, but most don't. Not to mention the stupid questions people ask wanting to know if you are going to be a farmer!!!

But I might ask just as many stupid questions if you started talking TPS reports, stock markets, and computer programs used to steal money.

It's neither rude nor "elitist" - just a funny story.
I don't think it's all that funny either.

The real, elitist comedy gold comes from dense climbers, not ignorant non-climbers!

I wonder if on a Bull Riding forum somewhere there is a thread titled, "Stupid things that non-bullriders say," that the participants use to help them continue to feel elite.

I'm sure there is, and there is probably that one special cowboy telling the other cowboys they need to be more understanding with the general public.

Perhaps because that special cowboy has heard the same bullshit thousands of times previously, normally from true-believer n00bs.

well the bull riding forum wasn't very interesting, mostly just boring threads started by "Bulls N Beer". But I did find someone ask the following:

"Hello Everyone, I am 18 years old
I watched the rodeo yesterday and I normally watch it on tv but its totally different in real life. I went there and the smell, the animals, the people, it did something to me. I want to get involved in something like that. I would love to get into bull rideing like you wouldnt beleive. How would a person start doing something like that? please help it would be greatly appreciated."

Unfortunately all the replies were respectful and helpful :(

Coming from a mom watching her son fall on TR at the gym:
"Don't swing out too far!" (as she runs over to grab his feet to stop him)

After the second fall:
"Seriously, that is NOT cool, you're going to get us kicked out of here"
...she was actually getting really mad that her son couldn't defy the laws of physics.

Coming from a middle-aged man who just reached the top of the beginner wall and was about to be lowered:
"Okay, on rappel!!"
