You know Jay, the humor lies in the stupidity of forgetting to spit the rope out, and it's only funny now, probably wasn't when it happened. I've had way to much time on my hands in the past 24 hours but I have learned something. You can't remember what it's like to be a kid, something pretty close to that. You are striving so hard to be ideal, that you come across on this website as if you think you are better than everyone else. Well, maybe when it comes to climbing, you might be close to right. But you've given away to much for me to believe you're a god.

While setting up a lead climb above Rockwork Orange in Woodson - 3 kids came up "Are you guys going skydiving?"

While bouldering at the gym - "Why can't you go to the top? My son did 5 times today (up the childrens route)."

While top roping outdoors - "Shouldn't you be wearing claws on your boots? Do you have a bolt gun? Have you done Everest?"

While informing someone that I rock climb - "Oh I did that at the fair, it was fun and I got to the top!"

hehe so cute

While bouldering in the climbing gym.
A 6 or so year old boy with a birthday party: (Referring to the crashpad under me) "Why is that under you?
Me:It's in case I fall.
The fascinated little boy walked away and when he was walking by talking to his friend.
Friend: Why's that thing under him?
Little boy: It's so that if he falls he bounces back up.
I just wish I could have seen that boy land on the pad and see the look on his face.

At the Gunks, while asking a group of climbers on the carriage road if they knew where to head up for a certain climb, someone nearby came over, pointed up directly from where we were, and said "There's one up there with a couple of really big ledges up higher - is that what you're looking for?"

Slacklining the other day a young girl (7 or 8) came up to me and said in a very sincere voice "You know, you could be famous by doing that."

It was pretty cute :)

Today, my friends and I were searching for a climb and we stopped in front of two women in order to get our bearings (we were all wearing our harnesses). One woman says: "You lookin for a spot?"
We relply with a yes and keep looking around. She then points across the road and says "A lot of people climb on that big thing over there"
And then we make a comment about how some of the bolts had been stripped off, so we were looking for another climb.
We then start to walk away and I hear her companion ask, very sincerely "Do they mean the bolts on the trail?"

I have no idea what she was thinking.

"Climbing is easy that's why I don't do it" which is what a classmate said to me when I was in school. So I slung him onto a top rope route which he was ''so sure'' he could do, threw out a bunch of slack and had him take a decent 10ft top rope fall. It surely scared the crap out of him and it was most certainly deserved.

"If you're a climber how come you don't wear any climbing brand clothes?" this is a question the same person mentioned above made to me and two others prior to his humbling top rope fall.

I was at Kangaroo Point, some nice cliffs nearby.. and there is a great traverse, bouldering style along the base of the cliffs. Also is a big park running the length of them..
One night around 6pm(there are lights all along so you can climb at night) I was bouldering, and observing the bouldering rule of staying low, so about 1.5 metres off the ground(4 feet), and this old couple started abusing me for being dangerous.. Not directly, but I could here them, so I turned around to look at them, not appreciating their comments.

However a few people run up the cliffs solo, in view of many "civilians" and that gives climbers a bad rep..

However I was at the indoor gym the other night, and we have a big 10ft boulder problem with soft mats under it. Some people were on it bouldering, and some little girl says to her dad why do they not have harnesses on.. The dad said because that is the playground part of the gym..

This was kinda scary at the time, though funny to look back on...

Settin up top rope anchors out at Seneca and a buncha teenage boys on some kinda trip scrambled by and after some reasonable questions asked "It would be bad if we untied those ropes, wouldn't it?"

We had all met the night before in a campground adjacent to a wall where we had spotted a faint line the week before.
We were sorting and splitting up loads for what was going to be a multi-day aid route. This family from Texas had pulled into the campsite next to our little tent city, in a BEHEMOTH motor home. They had been watching us all morning and eventually the father came over with his boy (maybe 9-10 years old) and asked,

"ya'll going up that mountain ..huh?"

After politely answering his questions and showing him the line we intended to climb, which went over a series of 8 overhangs,
he asked,

"can my boy join your club?".

I explained how the climbing was very technical, that we all had many years of climbing experience and that we would be on the mountain for most of the week.
Again..

"Uhuh.. but can my boy join your club?"

I looked down at his over-weight, out of shape son who I knew wasn't even capable of the approach, while trying to think of a polite way to say

"NO he can't and it's not a f*ckin club!"

He piped up once more..

"How much does it cost? I'll pay you.."

while reaching for his wallet.

Instantly we became a *club*.

I announced to him that unfortunately our *clubs* insurance policy did not allow non-members to participate in these activities, but he could check back next spring when they are signing up new members.

Pretty much every Friday afternoon, as I'm leaving work, my boss will say something like:

"So you gonna go out climbing again over the weekend?"

To that I usually answer with, "Hopefully!!"

Every single time the short pointless conversation comes to an end when she says: "Well just don't fall, we'll need you here on Monday!"

I make some polite joke at that and leave.

Seriously ... don't fall???? What awesome advice!

I was in a outdoor gear shop in belgium, a while ago.
I was planning to go to fontainebleau, but I didn't have a crashpad.

So, I went to this store (the store has a bad reputation, as a n00b in outdoor stuff, you shouldn't go there, because the people working there know less then you)
I went to the climbing gear section, looked around, searching for crashpads.
I couldn't see one, so I asked this lady working there.
me :hi miss, do you happen to have crashpads?
she: a crashpad?
me: yea, are you in charge of the climbing section?
she: yes, I am, but I don't know what a crashpad is.
me: it's a mat, you use for bouldering, for when you fall?
she: I don't know what bouldering is, but Just a mat won't save you from dying if you fall.
me: wtf? goodbye!

You should expect from those people they know something about climbing.

When I mention that I climb, the people at work (Air Force) all feel the need to pretend that they climb, and it amuses me every time.

"Oh, I climb too. I made it all the way to the top at this gym"

"I've done that! We hiked up and rappelled down the cliff. Do you rappel?"

"I'm pretty good but I couldn't do the small grips- can you?"

"I don't believe you- there's no 800-foot high walls. The biggest ones are like 4 stories."

That's all well and good, but just their tone (I can do that) is always funny. Like it's a competition.

I do like answering "dumb" questions, because most of them aren't so dumb if you don't climb.

50% just want to know if you rappel

20% think you mean gym climbing

20% want to know how you get the rope up there

10% want to know if you "free climb"

Occasionally, someone actually sits through an explanation of lead climbing. Without fail, they think it's awesome, and I explain to them that that's one of the coolest things about the experience. I have heard plenty of intelligent questions from these folks- and even gotten one of them to start climbing with me.

we were up climbing up Big Cottonwood Canyon when this couple came hiking by us. (I have no idea why they decided to go up the talus, it's definetly not fun) They ask the always anticipated question "How do you get the rope up there" I'm in a nice mood so i explain it to him, show him the cams and stuff. He of course asks "So those are pretty secure huh? So then, the best climber always goes up first right?"

a few minutes later and maybe 5 feet up higher on the talus, panting quite heavily he asks
"So how much further to the top?"
me: "The top of what?"
"you know, the top"
"umm, well, theres a lot of mountain above us if that's what you mean"
" look, how much further to the top? i thought you climbers for sure would've been to the top, i guess not"

he then turned around, started down, fell on his ass on the talus and slid the rest of the way down very frustrated.

I swear that on any given day last year when I worked in Yosemite and went bouldering after work at least 50 people would ask me what the crash pad was for. A co-worker of mine told me that while his girlfriends mother was visiting them I walked by them and after I walked by she asked him what the pad was for and he told her I was a narcoleptic and had to wear it at all times.
