Near-feral things, we would feed them on the front porch in exchange for them keeping the local mouse population somewhat under control. One afternoon approaching winter solstice as the days grew shorter, my older sister was just arriving home from school. Coming up the steps to the porch, she reached down to pet one of the cats eating from the cat food bowl. Of course, this was not one of the cats, but in the early evenind dusk that she didn't realize this until it stiffened it's back legs and released an immense cloud of pungent stuff. It took several gallons of tomato juice to clean her and the front porch up to the point that it wouldn't make your eyes water. The only thing she can really say about it after all these years is "Skunks? Yeah, I petted one. Once."

Keeps you occupied while giving your eyes a rest; I can only read for 3-5 hours before I need a break, even if I'm enjoying the book. That's not a bad idea... especially if I transfer it from CD onto my mp3 player.
Libraries are usually a great way to get them for free.
