I LOVE my muscles. (I'm a girl) My Mom is disgusted by them, hahaha! It's all a matter of taste. Some are into buff climber chicks and some are more into runway models. I don't think there's anything wrong with either preference...

I used to have a partner who took it as a personal insult when a woman could do a climb and he couldn't. His projects usually involved climbs that he had seen a woman do. I personally think that many women are better climbers than men because they have better form. They can use the balance factor. I have also heard that women have a better strength to weight ratio.

You know, I climbed with a guy two days ago who couldn't go up a route that I had pretty much no problem with. I wouldn't let him down until he did it, and his resolve and openness to my coaching was not only refreshing, but . . . it made him way cuter.

Enough of this madness!!! I wouldnt be suprised if our male climbers childish behaviour has put off girls from climbing! Ladies - im sorry for the behaviour of my species. If my memory is correct the initial question asked if male climbers were intimidated by stronger female climbers. My view is that intimidation should have no place in Rock Climbing, as a sport or as a culture. Unlike most sports, we have a common goal. Whether the climber be male a female we can only benefit from having them around. I dont even get intimidated by the muscly guy at my local gym who thinks hes too good for it. Also mentioned in the initial post was what defines the line between a "good climber" and "she looks manly". This is like comparing chalk and cheese. There is no connection. Just because a lady has large muscle mass does not make her a good climber, nor does a lady with a more petite figure have to be a poorer climber. There is simply no relation here. later, Dizzy.

Quote: Ladies - im sorry for the behaviour of my species. Has that line ever worked? Please. Yes, I am intimidated by women who can climb better than me. I am also intimidated by men who can climb better than me. But at least I can call the men names like "wussy sport climber" and "spandex boy" and secretly wish he would put his shirt back so he doesn't make me look so bad. Women on the other hand have a slightly different effect on me. I become shy, reclusive, and tongue tied. I go home and cry myself to sleep wondering why I cannot land me a hot chick like that. BTW, I secretly have a crush on xgretax, rock_diva, nikegirl, crazylikeafawkes, rockwomyn, and any other women who has ever laced up a pair of rock shoes.

My wife just started climbing and she regularly schools me and my climbing buddy in smoothness and fluidity. We were seaing balls to set a new route in some rocks outside of town and once we had the anchor set she sailed up the problem that had given both of us a good minute or two of stopping and thinking without even half the holds we had used. of course this was after we had top-roped it, so she didn't have the worry of placing pro. but it was only her thrid time being roped in. I love it. she will soon be way better than me (then she can lead those damn sketchy routes)

I'd have to say that climbing won't produce the huge muscles that body builders have so there's not intimidation factor there. Plus, the fact that women are not as strong as men mean they have to use better technique and that often makes them better climbers after a while. Any girl who likes the outdoors is okay in my book.

I have to put my 1cent in. I dig a climberchick or a non-climberchick. But to have a routine of working out in any fashion is a must, I climb, ride, run, lift....she should do something too, to keep in interesting...Or maybe I'm compulsive(she says) I'm new to this site......It Rocks!!

I think we lose the point in climbing. It's to better you, beat the odds. Woman or man, we're all different and have different obstacles. If I'm 200 lbs and can only climb 10 feet, hear me roar because that is my best. Climbing is a you on you struggle, but if anyone wants to make it a you and me issue then I can be found. No press please, too embarassing for yous JD

I think women will not like a guy who climbs worse than them. I see no reason why both persons in a relationship must climb. Beautiful body: Firstly, beauty is personal- so tastes vary. But in general: Men like slender women with body fat % above 15-18%. So if you put on muscle and drop to below 15, you SHOW too much muscle. On the other hand date a 12% BF woman, marry her, make babies, even if she puts on weight she is still way sexy. (I am going to be killed for this- but who cares!) So female climbers who have dropped below 15 will look muscular(undesirable to some) in a sportsbra- but they will look damn good in a sleeveless evening dress. So climbing will improve your appearance, as will more muscle. As long as you dont put on way too much muscle(15 pounds or so) AND be below 15% body fat- you will look good. Putting on 15 pounds is hard even for men. So it is even harder for women- when done naturally without steroids. I see these women in my gym, gyrating for better legs- if they leg pressed a decent amount- they would get better looking legs. Even if women lift weights 90% of them avoid leg exercises. This is so sad- considering they are doing it for better shape. More muscle= more beauty To look ripped for a woman = you must be body fat below 15% and have a lot of muscle.

Thanks for our requirements.....i'm heading out tonight to have my body fat % tatooed on my forehead so even if i have a great body and great personality i won't hook up with anyone who requires the use of numbers in their process of judging people.

Well guys! I think this topic has given far too much controversy! I'm not surprised though. I started climbing just two or three months ago so i can't say that my body is built of climbing but i've always been very sportive (athletics, soccer..). By that i mean that i've always had to hear guy's comments such as: "wow...how much muscle u've got! it's amazing..." I've always been disapointed by such comments! I think that there are lots of guys (at least here) who disapprove built girls as they think it's manly. I do hate that word but it's how many guys describe these girls who have their body well built just cos they enjoy practising sport! What's wrong with that? Sorry but i strongly hate these sexist comments! Guys (fortunately not all of you!) don't u think it's about time u stopped putting pressure on us? Top models, skinny gals...no muscle...come on! I'm fed up! Girls...if u like sport...go for it! No matter what they tell u... Just my opinion... Laura

Interesting observation Mr. Dude: And while I respect your opinion…I feel the desire to offer my opinion as well. My attraction to women, as you’ll notice from my previous post] , does not necessitate a particular “body-type” nor is it confined to a sliding scale of one’s Body Mass Index. I live in beautiful southern California; which is to say that there is absolutely no shortage of what you might deem as beautiful* people. This has lent itself to making me much more aware of the attributes of others that go much further than their perceived appearance. (I use the term “perceived” to emphasize that it is only one’s personal perception…not necessarily reality…that attracts one to another and therefore has been the cause of many very short relationships.) I feel that this has opened my eyes to beauty not captured by a photographer’s camera…or a magazine editor’s layout. It goes much deeper than that. And if you haven’t already, I hope that you too will learn to appreciate the inner beauty…the core. Peace -Hanger *(Based on the criteria that you’ve listed as the general guidelines for males to find the female body attractive.) [ This Message was edited by: hangerlessbolt on 2002-05-02 11:01 ]
