Climbing terminology------"Dude, I almost cratered when I logged some air time above that jingus brassy! The nut blew, but my red C3 held. I tried to gaston off that chip while smearing a toe against the left facing scoop. Man, I'm gonna whoof down some PBRs later while I spew the beta on this!" If you can translate this, you might have a chance at writing a legitimate paper

cmagee1 wrote: Let me clarify. Im focusing on the "language" of rock cimbing. More specifically, the depth of climbing terminology and how it relates to the community. The reason I left it so open is that most climbing related writing can be used in reference to this topic. I dont have a thesis yet, its more of a research question at this point. Thank you guys for everything you've posted so far! Why don't you write about terms for related to emotion in rock climbing. EG:Frog in the Headlights, sewing machine leg, throwing a wobbler, sketched out...it would be awesome to attach a sound file of the noises that climbers make when they are about to fall or the screams on the way down. If you want me to write the paper for you, I charge $1 a page but I guarantee a B or better at any college. Now get off the internet and write your paper.

Chief among the findings of the research: climbers talk louder to their partners when they are further away (p. 92). I found this using Google Scholar. Guess what? You can use Google Scholar, too! Jay Contrary to speculation Im actually familiar with basic search techniques. A search of this site would have yielded you this: http://www.rockclimbing.com/..._Dictionary_528.html Climbing Dictionary (of terms) Edit... Just so ya know... Jay (jt512) is an academic, who works and conducts research (of sorts) at a university. He just has a low tolerance for 'gumbies' [that's a climbing term, BTW ].

Most General ed classes are referred to as GE. The university I attend has a specific group of 100 level required courses that are labeled "GEED." The course this assignment pertains to is a 100 level pre-req writing course that falls into this sub-category.

A quick google seems to show that it is a term used exclusively at Christian schools. So there's a hidden agenda there - it sure would be interesting to know what it is. Edited to add - I found a counter-example. The University of Alabama also uses GEED = General Education. GO

Jay I'm with Jay here, where do the extra "E" and "D" come from? Where I come from (NY state), GED stands for General Equivalency Diploma, but I have yet to hear of a GEED.... Edit: never mind, explained above as being "university" specific....

Since you are simply writing a communications paper then look for legit books or interview a certified guide. In the future when you do research use academic search premier through your library. I did my masters on recreational psychology and found plenty of peer reviewed research on climbing there.

Well, it was back in 1972...and I was kidding. But now I know what to do if the economy sends my job packing. I might have to adjust the quality of the writing so that the professor doesn't get suspicious.

Jay Contrary to speculation Im actually familiar with basic search techniques. The purpose of this post was not to learn how to do research, it was just for collaboration. As someone much newer to the sport, I was purely asking those more experienced than myself for any possible sources they may have discovered over the years. Now, I understand that no one really goes around accumulating "sources" but Im sure that in the course of your climbing career you may have read something that could pertain to the topic I tried to explain. If you have not, then I appreciate you attempt to help. However, this was meant to be far less frustrating than it has apparently become to you. I apologize for the inconvenience. errr... people do in fact go around accumulating "sources", as even a casual glimpse at a newspaper would show. Anyway, I'd suggest reading some of Tom Patey's writings if your looking for some great climbing lingo. But I still have no idea what it is you are actually looking to write or write about.

here's a topic that i've always wondered about, which maybe you can shed some light on: what is it about forums like rockclimbing.com that they bring out the worst in people? more than half of the people who post on this forum come across as cocky arrogant smartass juvenile a-holes. This seems like a very relevant topic for a communications class such as the one you're taking. Is it because they're male? or because they climb? because they're young? (or old?) or because they can hide behind the internet? does the forum naturally attract such people? maybe if you read enough posts you can draw some conclusions or at least speculation. seriously... (now i'm sure some person will demonstrate this behaviour when they respond to this post)
