Well i haven't cancelled my tix just yet.

I'm not sure what to do. I'd love to meet everyone, but the regular hassles of customs, flying, renting a car to get there and having no freaking clue where i'm going.

Also, and this is the embarrasing part, I was a sure thing for a promotion here at work and it was going to be a nice little pay increase. to celebrate, i dropped money on tickets for my partner and i.

well, a day before the new job was offered to me, the director of my department decided to exercise some cost saving muscle and had the entire promotion redone. the new job was reworded just to drop the value, and the pay increase was lost. needless to say, i declined their offer.

but now i also don't have as much cash to cover this trip. i spoke with the airline and if/when i cancel i can put the money up to cover tickets later in the year (we always go somewhere for xmas/new years, this year it may be spain!!)

so i just don't think i can make it. besides, you guys all know each other, you big crowd you. no one will notice a wee ol' fawkes missing.... :S

In reply to:
One 60M will be fine for climbing at the Forks, but bring plenty of webbing and cord -- possibly a short static line -- to set up a tope rope. You'll also probably want another line to set up for rappel to get down into/back out of the canyon. We usually bring one rope and set it up on a route that we know we can TR to get out of the canyon, and then another one for leading/TRing the routes we want to climb. There are no fixed anchors, so everything you set up on top for climbing or ascending will need to be off of a tree or gear at the top.

This sounds like you rap and then climb back up? I guess I'll figure that out when I get there.

On the webbing, static line, etc., fine, but don't you local people think that ought to be the sort of thing mentioned in the RDB? That way I don't drive all the way out, buy a guide book, and find out that I should have brought all this other crap with me? That intro section should give people the basic info on what they need as far as basic gear is concerned.

Maybe it is just me?

In reply to:
Looking forward to seeing you there! We'll talk more politics -- see if I can convert you this time. ;-)

I look forward to the seeing you too, since it has been awhile with you skipping RRR and all. Good luck on the gaining converts, but probably not me!

Greg

Think POMEGRANATES, Jess!!

Origin: The pomegranate is native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India and was cultivated and naturalized over the whole Mediterranean region since ancient times. It is widely cultivated throughout India and the drier parts of southeast Asia, Malaya, the East Indies and tropical Africa. The tree was introduced into California by Spanish settlers in 1769. In this country it is grown for its fruits mainly in the drier parts of California and Arizona.

When life hands you lemons (the crappy job deal), exchange them for pomegranates. And where do pomegranates grow?!?! IN ARIZONA!!!

So come get yours. :D Don't worry about the goofy banter in the thread. Most of us have only met once or twice, if at all, and just know each other from the site, LIKE WE KNOW YOU!

I can meet you at the airport on Thursday and help you to the rental car place or you can skip the rental, save some cash, and I can just pick you up.

Why doncha consider staying at our place on Thursday night. Art and Maculated will be staying there (late) and maybe a few others. If you don't know Art and Kristin, they are cool. WAY cool. I'll make a big 'ole breakfast in the morning, we can make our leisurely way up there and you'll know a handful of people by then.

Come on girlie, I've been waiting to meet you for like...ummmm... what? 3 years now?? Seeing as how you're going international for this trip, I would be more than happy to pick up the beer tab for this weekend for ya. We'll go grocery shopping and get some cheap eats and you can use our cook stuff.

It CAN be CHEEEP!!! And I promise you'll have an AWESOME time!

PLEEEAAAAAZZZEEEE ?!?!?!

(c'mon people! Help me out here!)

Pomegranates, Jess.

P O M E G R A N A T E S!!!!

Yeah, you should go! Erica is right, It'll be a blast. I'm going a little later on Friday, right after work. (Maybe Noon?)

While I'm here... I need a volunteer! I need someone to belay me when I take a shot at leading Ship Of Fools at the forks.
The ideal volunteer must be reliable( of course) and bold beyond belief.
(Ed? Are you up for the challenge?)
Ask anyone who has seen me fall, it's NOT for the faint of heart....

okay i've crunched some numbers.

if you guys aren't going until friday, maybe i can change my flight to arrive friday. I haven't called the airline yet, but i see there's one arriving in phoenix at 12:34. think you'll be on your way to flagstaff by 1pm?

the tricky thing here is my vacation time. i could pay the fee and change the flight to friday, thus saving a vacation day.
I booked for thursday originally since i would have been travelling with someone, now i'm flyin' solo.

To really push it, my flight back is a red-eye on monday. in theory, i could come straight to work (sleep at desk).

i'm going to go ahead and cancel damian's ticket, since he really really can't go. i'll talk to the ticket people about options for changing my flight around. erica, thanks for all your generous offers... i'm not poor now or anything, just trying to be money-wise. sometimes i get a bit too obsessed with saving money and forget that it's okay to spend every so often....

Jess, I've done the fly in and waste a day in Phoenix thing twice so far on climbing trips (KY and Utah) and both work out pretty nicely. You ever spent time in Phoneix? NOw you can!

And, I AM a poor college student, so I can assure you it's cheap to do it this way. Yay for busses and being athletic enough to walk around with a pack! I'm sure with how many people will be in Phoenix, someone can grab you.

Oh, no, Jess. I know you're not poor, but it's about $$ priorties. Trust me...looking to do two big trip in the next few months AND buy a house: you have to keep your financial obligations straight. So, I do understand and I'll show you Flag on the cheep-cheep.

WOO-HOO!!

We're SO GLAD you're coming Jess.

Whew! Gave me a scare there for a second!

Jess:

I know others have offered, but I will as well:

If you need a ride to/from Flag, a place to crash in Tempe (that place, BTW, is a 6 minute drive to Sky Harbor Airport.... 8 minutes if you catch a red light,) or any other assistance, just tell me. FYI, my roomie is a female, so it's not like you'd be stuck alone in "Reno's House of Debauchery and Immoral Behavior." (though if that's your bag, baby, I s'pose I can accomodate.)

(I hesitate to say this next part, cause I know all you pervs will twist it all around, but .... )

I am yours to command. Speak, and I shall obey.

thank you all.

i'm going to give myself the weekend to figure things out. i cancelled damian's flight and asked about the costs incurred to change my flight to friday, instead of getting in midday on thursday.

strange. i'd rather pay the difference in flights, and the fee to change it (which i'd have to pay for cancelling anyway) than loose a vacation day.

this could work... *starts to get hopeful again*

Don't worry, the big-hearted republican by the name of Curt is going to pitch in and help all of us poor-folks. Curt saved so much money from the recent Bush tax breaks for the upper-middle class that he is going to be buying booze for all of us lower to middle class peon's who loss money on the same tax cuts. This is where one of those "points of light" is finally going hit! Love you Curt. :D

[thinking]

Road Trip.

We get a few of us who have the endurance (or high caffine tolerances,) and drive up to Ontario, kidnap Ms. Fawkes, tie her up, and bring her back.

We'll need the following items:
* fifty feet of 9/16" webbing.
* a cargo van, white, with cruise control, cup holders, and a CD player.
* beer... three cases.
* duct tape.
* American money to bribe the guys at Customs (the June 2002 issue of Playboy will work if we can't come up with extra cash.)
* Supertramp's Greatest hits CD (Neil Diamond will do in a pinch.)
* coffee and a Java Press.
* one Rand-McNally road map.
* a bouldering pad to sleep on.
* seven cases of Ramen... Shrimp or Chicken.
* two locking carabiners.
* a Whisperlite stove, with fuel.
* one box of Junior Mints.
* a duffel bag to hide the Cuban cigars we'll also bring back (ya just can't go to Canada and NOT bring back a box of Cubans... It's a rule.)
* three pounds of chocolate covered espresso beans.
* roll of toilet paper... with aloe, to prevent chaffing.

Way I figure it, if we have 4 people, and each person drives a 400 mile stretch while the others take naps, we can do this non-stop. Up and back should take about 48 hours.

I'll drive the first shift.

Who's in?

Ford: BRING YOUR MIGHTY SANDIBLES!!!! Alex and I are madly in love with that pooch. And now that Ed has volunteered to catch yer arse at the Forx, I volunteer to record the special event. I make people look goooood, baby. I'll take a pic to make your momma cry with joy. Oh, and Mac, I'll take your pic too. I mean it this time! And Curt, my offer is still on too. I am so much better behind the scenes at the Forks, as anybody who has seen me thrash there can attest ;) But I am pretty interested in leading a couple myself. Hee-haw.

Ed: your dog settles things with her mighty pooch breath. She licks my butt, too (though you did smear bacon grease on it). Kinky mutha ;)

re: ropes at the Forks. a single 60m will do fine for climbing. Actually, a 50 would probly get you by pretty well too- many, though but not all, routes are pretty short. Another rope is necessary for the rap, but I figure with as many generous peeps as we'll have, a few ropes will end up community rap lines and not every climber will need a personal rap line (like, one serving Pillow Wall, one serving the Prow area, a couple for the Gold Wall, one for the Yogis, a couple for the Davidson Wall...) Course, I don't mean to speak for EVERYBODY but I know we're all pretty decent folk like that. :)

Yay for Fawkes!

Erica, I intend to make you piddle your pants in person.

JT512, I know you're coming. And I KNOW you wanna spend ONE day at the Forks.

Amber- ?? off the fence yet? Franzia keg stands. C'mon!

Rick, wear your Gumby pajama pants. Please, oh please!!

Reno, you are too funny!!

And remember, the AZ last call law just changed, so we can haunt the Monte V till 2 a.m. now...

Hot damn! Thanks for victim...errr volunteering, Ed! I'm really glad you aren't one of those skinny half dead hippy kids that usually winds up getting sucked into this. (sometimes they get sucked into the belay device, too!) Ya know, there just ain't many MANLY men (like us) in climbing these days...

Awww Hillary, thanks for the photo volunteering, you might get a good one of unkie Ford logging more air time than an airline pilot!

Much as I'd LIKE to bring the mighty Sandable Dawg, (She wuvs her unka Hillary) it wouldn't be prudent. I'd need to find someone to dog-sit back at camp while I watch all y'all drink yerselves into oblivion. No WAY I'm missing that!

On that subject, I can provide designated driver service to a carload of people on TWO conditions...

* We will NOT be using my wheels (puke in yer own car dammit!)

* We go somewhere where I can get dinner.

Demanding lil bastard, huh?

this is coming together nicely...I'm gonna have sooo much fun.
Note to self: Self, sleep in advance, you don't wanna miss a second of this weekend.

---Unkie Ford---

Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts. Our flight from reality is about to hit some mild turbulence.....
