I'm thinking about making this a deluxe western ice year, complete with learning to tele-ski in vail (I know how to snowboard, but no skiing yet), hopefully a few days of Vail area ice leading up to the festweek, Ice park action the week of the fest to put my head back on, then into the back country during the ice park madness, maybe this time we'll actually find the climb. Or just go riding in Telluride like we should have, eh Sharpie?
That'll be the tentative plan, pending funding (or at least having a job to come back to) and finding a good dog-sitter... Damn, I'm psyched on ice already and haven't made it to the fall rock season!
I'm planning on flying into Denver, how do you feel about Vail, Steve?

Plan as we discussed should be GTG. Flying into Colorado Springs would be better though; crash at my place and then head out EARLY to Vail.

Well done. I'm still psyched on the Don Julio, you bring the scotch so I can compare/contrast... What I don't know is how you know about the hypothetical bikini briefs (not admitting guilt of any kind) and the hypothetical lotion choices (again, not confirming anything)? I'm just wondering, because NO ONE knows about those things, if they were to hypothetically exist... the champagne, walks on the beach and Bette Midler stuff though, that's just common knowledge, I thought everyone liked it under the boardwalk?

Who's flown into Montrose before? Any suggestions on finding cheap tickets? I've been all over the discount sites and the best I'm finding is $450 HELP!

You're flying, Lisa? What happened to the crazy roadtrip you do each year? I forget when we booked, but two years ago Katie and I got tickets into Montrose for like 370 on travelocity. No matter what, it sucks! Might be better off flying into Denver and hitching a ride with someone.

I didn't have any problems flying with mine. I checked them in, of course, but didn't have any difficulty when my bag got checked.
I think Petzl or Black Diamond makes a "travel case" for axes, screws, etc; might have to pick one up this time.

Mr Gumbie and I flew to Denver with all our ice gear checked last year and didn't have any issues. We've checked a full trad rack a few times without any issues either. We do have a spreadsheet of all of our gear just in case a bag goes missing, and we have tucked a "dear TSA agent" letter on top of the gear each time explaining briefly WTF they are looking at. All that being said, insurance on the bags to cover replacement costs isn't a bad idea. It's always a huge relief to see the last of our bags come around the baggage carousel and know that our vacation isn't hosed.
BTW, we're definitely going to be there for/before the fest this year! There's an off chance that Mr Gumbie might have other commitments but I will be there for sure.

As scary as it is, I've checked $3000 (or more) worth of bike+gear many times and not had a problem. Of course, a bike is not as easy to slip in a pocket and whisk away, but a thief would have to know what climbing gear is to know the worth. Get the TSA locks. That may remove an opportunity for some sticky fingers while still permitting the TSA search. And I'd be willing to bet a case of climbing gear is going to get searched once the screeners see it in the x-ray machine. My bike and camping gear get searched every time I fly.
One thing to try is to arrive quite early, and ask if you can lock your case after inspection. I was once escorted through the bowels of Laguardia airport, through doors marked "Authorized Personel Only," and allowed to lock my bike case after it was swabbed for explosives inside and out.

As the time draws closer for yet another Gathering of Rockclimbing.com at the Ouray Party Event (a.k.a. G.R.O.P.E.), I offer you, the casual reader, a review of the Eight-step Reno Enduro Climbing Training (ERECT.)
1. Spend $4000 on "technical performance" clothing that is guaranteed to wick sweat, keep you dry, insulate, and made from rip proof fabric. Take it out of the box, put it on, and admire the look. For the first time you actually wear it climbing, you will get soaked with sweat, drenched in water, cold, and large tears will develop.
2. Take a couple of claw hammers, a large sheet of pressboard, and a hose. Turn on the hose, aim the water at the pressboard, and keep it up until the wood is soaking wet. Use this to perfect your tool swinging technique.
3. From time to time, have your best friend pour a bucket of ice water down your back (or spray you with the garden hose,) and throw ice cubes at your head. A slingshot works well for the ice cubes.
4. When practicing the tool placement technique, wear roller skates. This will approximate the sensation of crampon placement.
5. Try not to squirm as rivulets of sweat find their way to your backside and slowly trickle down your crack. No matter what, you should resist at all costs the urge to scratch your crack with the business end of your ice tools. There is no good that can come from that. If you don't believe me, ask Redpointron.
6. For the true alpine experience, do this with a 40 pound pack at 2 am.
7. Proceed to the local el mercado (grocery store) and purchase some dried poblano peppers. Grind them into a fine dust consistency, and shove a pinch up your nose. Without moving your tool placements, try to wipe the resultant snot on your gloves.
8. Retire to the hot tub, drink cold beers and single barrel tequila, and talk about how great it was and how you look forward to going tomorrow, too.

What's the closest airport near you?
I can find you something cheaper than 500. Promise.
For example: Boston to Montrose, round trip, flying on the 9th and 14th, is $366 (with a stop in Denver to change to a small plane.)
If you can arrange a ride from Denver, it's only 218 for BOS-DEN.

There ya go, Biner. $220 plus the cost of some beer and gas for Angry, and you're at Ouray for less than $250 or so.
It really doesn't get cheaper.

Here's my plan. I'll be there, a little.
I'm not too into festivals of any sort, but I do like Ouray and I'd like to meet some of you folks. I don't think I'll have more than a day or two of work to do all of January, so why not.
As far as sleeping goes, I'm not really psyched on $50-70 a night for a room sooo....
A) Let's get a whole crew together and split it
B) I'll sleep in the back of my truck
C) Every night I'll slaughter a cow and sleep inside it
I'd prefer the room because it gets dark so early, I don't want to go to bed at 6.

occasionally i have to drop off the grid..even though i didn't feel that far off the grid when i saw 50 cent in the mumbai airport.

Amen, 12.5 hours of double time *plus* paid vacation hours today, and shorter days of the same deal for xmas and new year's eves means I won't have to compromise my morals in order to make it to Ouray. Stinks to have to miss those otherwise 5-day holiday weekends, but it will be worth it. Now if my ATFL tear would just heal up I might have some chance of training beforehand...

Hey guys,
My name is Clint and I am up here in Anchorage, AK. I'm really hoping to get down to Ouray for the Ice Fest in January. Actually, I'm hoping to fly into Denver on the 1st or 2nd. I would like to go to Ouray as soon as possible upon arriving there, then stay in Ouray until the 12th.
The only problem is that I'll be looking for a ride. So, if anyone thinks they will be going down to Ouray in early January, or if they know someone who will be, I would really appreciate the reference.
If there is a bus system that could get me tehre too, that would be great.
Basically, any info would be appreciated. I'd love to carpool with someone, would split gas.
As far as climbing partners go, I've got a crap load of them down in Ouray already, just looking for a ride.

Anybody possibly have some couch or floor space for a couple climbers headed out to the festival?
I am working with the NSCD at Winter Park in Colorado this winter. If anybody had room then I would be happy to return the favor and host a few people in Winter Park this year for a trip. Besides having a slick pad, I can swing half price lift tickets.

So I have been puttering around looking at all the info for Ouray 08 and was curious if its cool to pitch a tent in proximity to the park without getting evicted from property. I would hope to dirtbag as much as possible since funds are always low in the winter time. If it cant be done there then where and is anyone willing to split hotel rooms and belays? If you have any ideas let me know. I really wanna go and hang out at some of the clinics.

There is a condo available for $160/night, it is a 2 bdrm, call the Box Canyon Lodge for info.
I might regret posting this: we've been thinking about snagging that condo, but our friends are staying at the Best Western and we didn't want to be too far away from them. I'd still consider splitting the condo, with another couple/party...

Don't bother relying on the shuttle. You can walk just about everywhere, except to the Orvis Hot Springs and an actual supermarket that has stuff you can cook.

Oh and reno to ease your mind. I learned ice climbing on a trip to alaska with a guide. Also had hours of talks and beers with a guy thats been doing for 20 years. It's gear i didn't have to buy in alaska.

So, with just 4 short weeks until I leave for Ouray, my employer decides to totally jack up the schedule for January. They have me working the 11th and 13th.

yeah i was kidding. basicly just trying to give reno and maww a hard time. It's hard living in texas with all of the hobbies i have. Colorado could cover acouple but i'd still have to travel to get most of them. That could explain where most of my money goes... For this trip i was lazy and didn't save up any money. So i'm just going to sell my truck.

Hi, I just read up on your race. Its amazing how much preparation (and sacrifice) we do sometimes for these big important things in our lives. What makes it all the sweeter is the dramatic realization that perhaps you would not have learned the important lessons that were there had you finished the race.
I am proud of you as an individual for not just training and pushing yourself, but for finding meaning in all of it.

thanks for taking the time to check it out. a truly transcendent experience.
my ankles and knees are great, but i have (believe it or not) tendinitis in my elbow really bad. from holding a water bottle for all those hours, i guess. have been doing graston with the therapist. very painful process, but i LOVE it.
22 days till i fly out.

Damn. I need to start packing today. Seriously, on the 23rd, I fly to Hawaii for ten days. I get back on the 2nd, work a 24 on the 3rd, people fly in on the 4th and we drive out the morning of the 5th.

Hey Mark, you're part of my Ouray tradition...I will definately miss you!
If you can afford the rest of the trip, start hunting for people that fly all the time, or someone that buys a lot of stuff on their points card. Then charm them into letting you use their frequent flyer miles that they're never going to touch.

If you're disciplined enough to do it, using a points/air miles card to buy things is a great idea. I use mine for just about everything. Groceries, dinner out, beer, utilities, rent, gas.... EVERYTHING that costs more than a couple bucks. Then, once a month, I mail Visa a check for $2500 or so to bring my balance to zero.
I think I get somewhere around 40,000 miles every year.
But ya got to be absolutely diligent and disciplined about it. You can get behind in a big damn hurry if you're not.

I'm an ice noob but my learning curve is going straight up. I'm currently leading WI4 in most cases and can follow anything. I'm getting a bit more consolidated every time I get out. I'll be better by the time I get there than I am now.

i will be in on the 3rd. my climbing plans are cloudy at best, but would like to climb with you. recovering from severe elbow tendinitis so not as strong as normal, but would like to climb with you at least one day. sunday or monday might be good.

What's a girl gotta do to get a ride from Montrose?
I'll give you some hints...my money's good for gas, drinks, and tequilla. Plus, I can give a great massage.
As long as there's not a flight delay, the plane is scheduled to land in Montrose at 10pm on Wednesday.
I have a handful of places I may be able to couch surf at in Montrose if Thursday AM would be a better time for someone to help me out.
My goal is to be in the ice park by 11am to watch Adam (you might remember him...the crazy guy from Michigan that came home from Orvis witha black eye two years ago) compete in the prequalifying round.
Here's the kicker - I've three other friends with me.
Let me know if you can help. Thanks!
PS. Orvis closes at 10pm and Montrose is only 26 miles from there.

Flew over Prescott Valley towards Phoenix about an hour ago. Not sure where Wolfe Creek is.... give me some direction, or a map, and if I fly anywhere near it soon, I'll post up.

(quoting Ron Smiths Prescott and Central Highlands Trail guide) N34 27.39' W112 28.19' The creek essentially runs from east to west and the cliffs (approx 75' - 90') face west. Like I said, there was good flow last week a bit strong in my opinion, but with decreased flow and cold nights, I've heard they freeze!! Ice tools in hand!

Got the coordinates written down. I'm flying every other day for the rest of the month, and will swing by if at all possible. Heck, I might just hike up there on a day off.
Edit: Looking at TopoZone, it appears to be south/southwest of Groom Creek a bit. We fly over that general area on the return trip from Phoenix, so if I get a flight to the valley, we'll swing by (well, if it's daytime.... despite the technology, I doubt I'll be able to pick out a frozen flow with our NVGs.)
If it's in, we're on. Beers at Prescott Brewing afterward, right?

Update on AZ ice. I hiked to the falls this morning and about half the cliff was frozen. Flow has decreased some but without brutally cold conditions, it won't entirely freeze. I'll try to get out there again in the next few days and take some pics.

When is the last time you heard of an NBA or NFL player spending most of their teenage life away from their families to play on a shitty junior team in bum f**k canada..just to hopefully get good enough to play in the Big league?
Also when is the last time you heard of an NHL player who was shot or fired shots in a gang related shooting? How about fighting dogs? There are plenty of example's.
While i would never argue that (most) of the NHL players get paid very well, and that that is certainly a reason they do it, I would argue that you'd find more players in the NHL who worked a lot harder
and appreciate were they are more than most in the NBA or NFL.

I was out a little over a month ago with some big ole' bad ass friends of mine. I was helping them rig for a Patagonia video shoot....anyway, I got my first EVER case of the screaming barfies. I thought I was going to DIE. It's pretty funny after the fact, but at the time, and being an EMT I'm thinking "HOLY SHIT!" "I've got all the symptoms of a heart attack!".
It was damn embaressing to be climbing with some total bad asses and FREAK OUT. They totally blew it off and were like "Dude we know EXACTLY what's going on". They were all blown away that it was the first time I'd ever had it happen.
I had know idea.....fucking sucked!

I neglected to remember the Ice Fest was coming up so quickly, and didn't plan for a place to stay! I'm sure everything must be booked up by now.
I don't take up a lot of room - I'm short and can even curl up into a ball that would only take up 3 feet of space. I can even fit under the bed!
I've got wads of magic paper money that only seems to be for exchanging some brew. I'd be willing to share.

Had to breathe for him, but he was actually looking pretty good when we got him to the hospital.
The medic asked the mom "how long was the labor?" Mom said " i sneezed and it came out"....HaHa!! Big laughs back at the barn on that one.

Yeah he was pretty tiny...good heart rate and trying to breathe on his own. Responded to being touched and stuff so he'll probably make it.
I'm just happy I didn't have to watch it come out...I'm not real excited about observing the dual function of that part of a womans body...might ruin it for me. I doubt it though....

All good signs. When I intubated that 31 week baby, I had to suppress a laugh at the ridiculously small ET tube. I've stirred coffee with straws bigger than that.

My FIRST call when I got back to CO last year was finding this unresponsive, diabetic, 300# guy in his single wide laying in bed covered in shit. no one wanted to clean him up, but we didn't want all that crap inthe rig so we ended upgrabbing towels and wiping him down. yum

Allright, here's the dilly yo.
I'm heading to Lincoln all day tomorrow, after which I'm going to the Nuggets game. The following morning (friday), I will climb in Vail. After that, I'm heading to Ouray, due to no place to stay until the 5th, I'll probably camp in Unaweep friday night and head in really early Saturday morning. I'll be there until wednesday or thurday.
Pretty much am going to be out of PM range starting tomorrow, though tomorrow night I'll probably check once more.
I've given lots of you my number, call me. Timd, Reno, RPR, and Anykine, I'll be calling you all probably on friday while I'm driving in.

Just got to town. Snowing like hell from Cortez northward. I came up over Lizard Head Pass, past Telluride, and over to Ridgeway then down. From CO 145, I could NOT see Ames Ice Hose through the snow. Ditto for Sneffles from Hwy 62 (I think it's Hwy 62.... The one that goes from T-Ride to Ridgeway.)
Ron, Steve, anyone else.... meet at B.Tempo around 6pm? I'm needing a shower, some salsa, and an el Jefe.
Or call me at the hotel, room 202. I have no cell signal.

I'm stuck in Durango tonight because the passes on 550 are all closed as well as Lizard Head. Anyone else get stuck on there way to Ouray with this big storm?
If anyone is in Durango and the passes do not open up right away tomorrow would anyone want to go climb in Cascade Canyon?

I'm driving out from California on Tuesday. My partner (from Boulder) won't be in until Friday, so I'm looking for folks to climb with. I'm pretty much an intermediate punter, but I'm happy to climb damn near anything. I'd love to get on Ames to complete my San Juan punter's trifecta (I've done Bridalveil and Bridbrain). Hey all. I rolled in a couple of hours ago and just had dinner. I may sleep in tomorrow after that drive, then head over to the park to mess around.
I'm partnerless on Thursday if anyone is interested, or if you don't mind another body climbing with you in the park.
RE: Driving. The road from Montrose to Ouray was fine (and I'm not in a good winter car), but they are expecting snow tonight--something between a dusting and 4 inches. I put the chains on tonight just in case...
OK. I'm beat after the long drive and a couple of 1554s at dinner.

Red Mountain Pass is closed right now (Wed, Jan 9, 1125 am local time.)
Lizard Head Pass is open, but drive careful and maybe bring tire chains. It just keeps snowing and snowing here in Ouray.

So a girlfriend is leaning on me to come down with her and her bf. If I can work out the transportation (mostly need a ride back to SLC) and now I need a place to crash, since I cancelled my room, silly me . We would lv Thurs evening so I'll sleep on it and decide sometime before 7 pm tomorrow.
The snow pics look awesome! Wow. maybe I should bring my XC or AT skis, that would give me something else to do, since I"m a total rookie ice wench.

Friday, figure on an early start. 7-730 am or so.

Got to meet the Geogoddess today, briefly, before heading to the Community Center for the Friday Night enchilada dinner and beer drinking fest. Oh, dear mercy, I think I drank MORE beer than the $15 cover charge paid for. Gonna hurt tomorrow.
Today was as fine a day in the park as possible. Up early, and as a group we dropped three lines just past the upper bridge, on "Pick of the Vic", "Tangled Up in Blue," and another steep and long line that I can't name.
Each of 'em are all of 50 meters, if not more, and right up in your face from the start.
More tomorrow. Such a good time.

I was doing those routes a day before you. The standard practice in the area (not sure of the exact route names) is to lower down until you're close the river, get a stick, and start climbing for TR, not sure if it's possible to lead some of them due to location. The final 10-15 feet is overhanging rock and the river isn't frozen.
I talked to a guy that was wet up to his armpits because of this. I thought about it while I was being lowered and realized the torture this guy went through.
I've recreated the dialogue that must have ensued.
Climber: That's far enough, stop now.
Belayer: (hears nothing)
Climber: Wait, no! Stop!
Belayer: (hears nothing)
Climber: Take!!! (while kicking in the air)
Belayer: (hears nothing)
Climber: Stop goddamn it!! (while being lowered very slowly into the river, James Bond villian style)
Finally the climber is standing in the bottom of the stream, up to his armpits trying to scramble up some broken pieces of ice to get started and get out of the canyon. This is made even sweeter with the 100+ feet of bulgy vertical and chandaliered ice he HAS to climb to get out of the canyon.
Damn, I laugh so hard I cry when I think of the poor climber being helplessly dipped into the river. Still glad it didn't happen to me.

Sorry I didn't get by to visit. We had a blast. The pass was interesting. Got through Red Mountain Pass early Friday morning. Had a little disagreement with a big ass block of ice and the ice won. Good times though. It knocked a tooth loose and I had a few small cuts. My nose got an ass kicking too. Man what fun. My jaw still feels like I did a face plant on the concrete. Ended up winning a nice Arctryx pack at the auction. The beer took over and I just kept biding. Keep my email. We get up there once or twice a month in the winter. Would love to have you come up and climb with us.

sorry we didn't get to meet, angry. I did meet redpointron (nice hat, dude) reno, sharpie, reese, mattb1921 (thanks for hooking up the ride back home to slc, matt) and a bunch of new friends.
I did my 1st ice climbs evah!! A friend coached me up a TR in New Frontiers, then I had a Easy Ice for Women Clinic with Kitty Calhoun, chatting away with her southern accent as she stepped up the ice.
We watched the comps on Saturday- what a sick route! Totally fun watching the climbers put it all out there.
I seriously never thought ice was for me, but I'm stoked enough that I'm looking into coming back for "Chicks With Picks". The set up at Ouray is amazing. See you all next year, for sure!!

Total shot in the dark but I gotta try. We stayed in the Best Western. Met a few guys in room 222 and climbed with them all weekend. Matt, Dan, and Chris. Never got their info but wanted to contact them. Matt was from SLC and Dan was from France. If anyone knows them and can give them my email address I would be grateful.

I'm glad to hear you had a great time at the fest! I wish I got to hang out with you a bit more... I guess we will have to take care of that next year!
Congratulations on doing your first ice route! I must admit once you try it, you get hooked! It's not only the sport, but the people and the atmosphere. I am always impressed by the graciousness of people at the fest, I couldn't ask for better climbing partners. Too bad you didn't get to meet redpointron, he is a stand up fella! And the town of Ouray sure knows how to make climbers happy, food, beer, and hot tubs!

thanks girlfriend, maybe next year we can climb together, if I get my skills going. I definitely plan on getting out again... maybe tomorrow, in fact.
