one of my favorite FA's was a route that had a arm sized "tunnel" halfway up the route. The only pro was to thread this hole with a 48 inch runner. I named it "Turn Your Head and Cough" 5.10d

Pizza Dick, Nomads Cave, Clear Creek. Some history on the naming of the route. Fred Knapp was working this route while Pete Zoller was putting in his line next to it. As Fred finished his route, he asked Pete Zoller what he thought it should be named. Pete said, name it anything but....Petes a Dick!! So of course that is the name that stuck, With a slightly different name..Pizza Dick. Anyway, that is the story. [ This Message was edited by: compclimber on 2001-12-03 21:44 ]

OK here are some of the more colorfull names Iv given to routes my friends and I have put up, some recent some not so recent. Cool whip, Bonerland, Underground Humanoid Lobes, El Gato, Morning Sickness, Illeagle Gardening, Power Hitter and recently The Viagra Experience and The Training Station are kinda cool. There are storys behind most of them and some just sounded cool at the time. But whatever you name a route try to be descriptive and creative nobody wants to see their route name ripped off.

A route name that always gives me a chuckle is "Jane Fonda from Behind". It's on the Jane Fonda workout wall In the Port Hills Here in Christchurch. Someone must have had a thing for that gal. A potential new route name that keeps popping into my head is Attack of the Killer Stunt Chickens. Could be a while before I can put up a route worthy of it though.

Sadistic Heathen Devil Gerbilz we used the name because one of my mates got attacked by a rock hyrax, he fell off and broke his arm... shame... Finga Muncha we named it this because of the reddish color of the rock, it looked like blood, as well as all the bloody crimpers.

So, I set this route in the gym, and called it the "Tom Cruise Traverse." Yeah, humerous in its own little stupid kind of way. "Texas Justice smells like hotdogs" I'd have to agree that "fuzzy undercling" is a name that just stuck with me. It's so, interesting...

I just found a virtually limitless supply of great route names.. take them from chinese take out menus. eg: 194. Fried Cantonese wide noodle with beef & Pepper in black bean sauce. just for fun you can mix in beer insead of beef for those really hard routes.

Came up with a new one today at lunch, On the bottom of the chick'fillet bag was this "white wonder" it's the name of the company that makes the bags. I've got to use that one at some point. Few others: Bethleham abortion clinic Emotional Landscapes The Revenege of Dr. Gonzo and, Raoul Strikes Back (fear and loathing reference) Trying and Flying And many, MANY others from movies, music... and the small creative side of my mind.

One of my favorites is Optional Ethics. It is a climb that uses both natural gear, and bolts for protection. The climb was previewed on toprope, then the bolts were drilled by hand, then the route was lead. There are only two bolts on the climb, and about a 20 foot runout on easy terrain between the bolts.

You gotta love the name Royal Arches! I have a project named THUD!! it's an A3+ seam in a slightly overhanging granite wall, it was my first project,my first nailed lead, and my first big leader fall! The granite was going by in a blurr,I felt funny in my stomach,I didn't know I was falling until I crashed into the ground, the climb was named for the sound that brought me back to reality.

The weirdest one I have heard, would be Dead girls don't say no. A 5/10c in va. and poop shoot, because by the time you are at the crux move, you feel like one on deck.... it is a 5/11, also in va.

Not lame... Every one has their own reasons for naming climbs something, and it may not be obvious to the reader, but to the creator of the route, his art bears the name with meaning to him/her.

There is this route that my brother named "Burning CC" because I was starting a campfire with dried up cow crap near the base during his first accent. One I am going to name is "So Damn Protected" taken from a brittney spears song, because I can easily climb around the route and place pro, but it's hard to climb. LaPlaya

Best ones I've heard are "Geriatric sex maniacs from Mars" "Sleeping bat in a ziplock bag" "The course of ancient astronauts" "Three fat chicks on a world tour" "Why doesn't anybody climb this?" But my favorite is "First Blood" and true to it's name, it was the first time I ever really bled on a route.

The best route name I've ever heard is on the N Face of Mt Hooker in the Winds, and is called Shady Lady. Brilliant. The gunks is a gold mine. Fingerlocks or Cedar Box, Make Haste or Tomato Paste, and the other great names mentioned before. Hueco Tanks is great too. Closed Casket Funeral, the Real Bruce Lee(RBL being an acronym for real bad landing), and a bunch of others I've forgotten. Sex Never Did This to My Hands is a nice 5.9 hand and fist crack in the Needles - tape up.

In "The Climbers Guide to Squamish" there's a photo of a route ON THE Chief called NEGRO LESBIAN, and the guy climbing it is a skinny little white dude. I got a chuckle. There's an endless number of great names, but if I got to name one, I'd call it MAKING BACON NAKED (sounds painful doesn't it?) [ This Message was edited by: bcmtngrrrl on 2002-04-17 12:47 ]

Two routes on DENALI with the names McClod's Rib and CLOD Face... Some Canadian climbers who were left out by the Calgary Mountain Club because it was felt they were not good enough called themselves the CLODS. They put up some vicious routes on DENALI... CLOD stands for: Calgary Leftovers On Denali Pretty cool stab at the "ELITE" Canadian climbers.

Burning Balls - Breakneck Rocks, PA I gave this route the name after spending 2 hrs cleaning the route with a brush. After 2 hrs of various brushing motions hanging in a harness, my balls we're litterally burning. Took several days to heal before I could get the redpoint. My most memorable F.A. to date.

Outside of Jinju i have acouple bouldering problems i named "problem child" and "the happy bulge". On the high buttress the castle is built on i have some problems named "invasion of the dwarves" (the castle was built when the japanese invaded in 1592 and the war was called Imjawarin, literally meaning the war witht he little people, because Japanese were much shorter than Koreans) and "butter me up". there is a really shoddy sport route out in Wharyungsan (sleeping dragon mountain) i named "are they f**kin crazy" because the bolts are truly rotten and the first one is a good 18-20 feet up. i remember somewhere in the states climbing a route called "syphillatic slit" but i don't remember where it was, maybe idaho or montana.

I went bouldering in LCC with my brother. We messed around on this rock for about an hour trying to figure moves to get up it... finally, when i got it, i reached up for this little hold, and there were two bugs attached together at the ass. I squished 'em. after i got to the top. i had to come up with a name, so i honored the fallen. The routes called "Humpin' Bugs" I'll post pics of it when i get them developed. (it may already have a different name, but i don't care.) I guess i will just name routes as i do 'em, because then i can have a name that does justice to the route. Peaze Frawg

In San Diego there's actually a route called "Butthole Express". I first heard this when a boyscout troop leader asked one of his guys if they wanted to give the buuthole express a try...I thought I was hearing things. I found out later in a guide book it's true. If I could name a hot route it would be "Wha-sah-bee"

I like routes with names like "Powder Puff Direct" "Strawberries and Cream" "Sweating to the Oldies" for heinous, run-out or under-rated climbs. I can see the headline now. CLIMBER SERIOUSLY INJURED WHILE ATTEMPTING "SWEATING TO THE OLDIES".

On a recent adventure at the Delaware Water Gap we were working on a new pitch when some ravens started fighting at the top of the cliff. They made such a racket we couldnt help but notice there was a commotion going on at the top. A few minutes later we heard rock fall and were suprised by a barrage of softball sized rocks coming down right on us so we named the new route TRUNDLE BIRD.

I live in Ohio so I don't get a chance to climb a lot. But I did do a bouldering problem called "Ounce and a Half" that I thought was a good name. If I ever get my FA, I want to name it "Up."

At the gym I go to there's a route called "Closer Then Our Mothers Knew"... it runs right beside a crack. I almost tore myself in half laughing. Other names I thought of (at least never heard of)... Hunt For Red Chocktober Indiana Jones and the Route of Doom Show Me You're Nuts Stick It In The Crack

I have to admit to skipping a few of these postings, so if they have been mentioned before, just count these as one more vote for them. All the ones I have in mind are found in the Witchita's near Lawton, OK. Superpseudomasachisticexpialidosious (spelling?? don't have the guidebood with me ) Another favorite is: Fifi in a blender (nice visual image Kerplunk (right off the water start) [ This Message was edited by: cyberclimber on 2002-07-24 07:22 ]

Cool Route names, would have to be Survival, Shitface, Frustration Syndrome, all these are located at the Gunks, and there are just so many others. But for my FA I would call it Flight of the Navigator or the Power of Flight. Something to that effect.

Honestly where do people come up with some of these names? Whatever happened to simplicity? But I guess, the ones I've heard haven't been any better. "Milking the Cow" is probably the most memorable one. I'd love to name one "The Great Gig in the Sky." Climbing to Pink Floyd rocks...er, no pun intended.

This is a great thread. My husband heard me laughing out loud from the other room and wanted to know what was so funny. Here's my contribution, all from the gunks: Welcome to the Gunks (5.10) Sixish (a 5.4+ that feels like 5.6) Bitchy Virgin (5.6) Bombs Away Dream Baby (5.8+) Cascading Crystal Kaleidoscope (aka CCK, 5.7+) Hawaii Five-Ten (5.10) Make Haste or Tomato Paste (5.10) One Blunder And It's Six Feet Under (5.10) MF 5.9 (I had a heck of a time on this one, and always thought it stood for m*er f*er, but I think it's actually someone's initials. Anyone know the real story?) Interesting that most of these climbs are named after pain, suffering, death, mayhem, or sex. Wonder what that says about us?

Among my favorites: "Synapse Collapse", Yosemite, on the left side of the Apron; thin fingers crux "Take Fist", at Beacon Rock, WA; large crack "Knob Job", Yosemite, I think at Five and Dime cliff?? (a Bridwell route-really fun 5.10a); and finally, "Exasperator", Squamish, 5.10c thin fingers...

This one is mine, but its still good. A 110 ft. pitch at a secret TN location. The gear is mostly 4 to 6 Friends (heavy on the 5s) and the pitch varies from being a dihedral to going out a roof slot and finishing with a splitter. Oh yeah, its name is Fattastic Voyage.

OK,, I have a couple of my favorites that I did the F.A. on. One is Dionysos and the other is Ravens Claw. But If I ever put up some insane A-5 I am going to call it Psycological Nudity. I have thought about Electric Gypsy, Last of the Puritians,Spastic Colan,Ride the Lightning and Hammer of the Gods. Anyway I like some of yours and would like to hear about any one's F.A. Peace Out.

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not (crazy list that's just to long to read tonight.. only because we were working power endurance at the gym).. Best route name: "Going to Harlem with a Turd in my Shorts" 5.8 at Mt. Rushmore, S.D. First ascent name (used on a boulder at Sylvan Lake, S.D.): South Dakota Brown Snake v3/4. It was named due to a joke from an apparant snake that a friend saw the day before. You can probably guess what it was.

There are so many with great stories that make the names memorable, but some that I like just for the name are: BOHICA (Bend over here it comes again) SLAP (Squeel like a pig - Deliverance reference, aptly named for a route in WV) If I find the appropriate route, I would love to name one - "Cry of the Chocolate Hostage" or "Droppin' the Kids off at the Pool"

"Tits out for the lads" - Flatirons "Down-presser (or?) Man" - Eldorado Canyon "I made it to the top now leave me the f__k alone!" - Unaweep Canyon "Perilous Journey" - Mickey Mouse Wall (there is one oppurtunity to protect it, with RP's no less, in the whole 150' pitch) "Phallus in suck-it-land" - Eldorado Canyon (right next to Alice in Bucket Land) The entire Dylan wall in Indian Creek (I'm probably wrong) is pretty good. The only route on there that isn't a genuine song title is "Bob can't climb"

My brother and his partner were working on a boulder in Japan that they called "Kyle's Mom". It probably already had a Japanese name. There's lots of good names at the Niagara Glen like "Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys". http://www.glenbouldering.com/guide-spec.php3?+435

Routes from the Daks: Wandering Lunatics No Comments from the Peanut Gallery Children and Alchohol Diagonal Chockstone Chimney - the name alone is not so funny, but in the description it states about the falling of the chockstone behind which you would chimney "Without this deadly cork at the top of the climb, the route is neither a chimney, nor does it have a chockstone. And it's not really diagonal either. Oh well." Mister Toad's Wild Ride Ornithologists From Hell Uncontrollable Desires - from the description "This route fittingly begins at the wet spot" Five Hundred Rednecks with Guns Another Whack and Dangle Job

A few I'd like to contribute when I climb them (unless they exist elsewhere): All this for a PHD? We don't need no stinking bolters (my first trad route) The last five minutes of the life of aaaaaaarrrghhh-splat. Gravity well (has to be a chimney) does anyone know of a route called gravity kills existing anywhere?

RRG route names I dig: -Fuzzy Undercling (cuz Porter put his hand on a bat while doing the FA, right?) -C Sharp or B flat (damn that's quality) -There's Nothing Like Whiskey to Make Maidens Frisky -The High Hard One -Minas Tirith -Burden of Dreams FAs I've done: - "One Fist Two Fist Red Fist Blue Fist" (my partner named it... at a wall with other Suess names... guess what kinda climb it is) - "Little Redneck Girls" (cuz it's dirty, short, and easy) - "Chia Man" (green lichen covered OW dihedral FA = Lichen covered me) - "Can't Get There From Here" (ahhh, I love old REM songs) - "3,2,1 Contact" (gear placements... in order of their appearance) FA's I want: - Bolts Next To Perfectly Good Gear Placements - Vanity Plates

OKCRocks (a closed-grain-silo-turned-climbing-gym here in oklahoma city) has a route named Dental Plan. I don't think it was the original FA name, but the story is that a leader who had a habit of using his teeth while clipping took a wicked fall and the rope yanked his teeth out. It's a decent blue (ratings are like skiing: green, blue, black), but I'm not much of an indoors guy, so i'm not going to try and rate it.

Just recently I was "leading" this route where I could not find any pro for the first 2/3 of the route. At the crux, I found a really manky #5 stopper placement, then nothing else, so I bailed onto an easier route, and soloed up it. When I got back down I realised that it was called "Illequipt" I now pay more attention to route names

Good question. I just saw the thread but it looks like it has been around. I've put up several sporter's with sick twisted names but It looks like you guys have that covered. The last route I put up before my shoulder injury was a route in the Beartooths here in Montana called Rattlesnake Ocean 5.10c A3. Don't want to start a verbal war here but to me it seems that trad big wall climbs in an alpine setting deserve a "mature" name, among others, especially when being asked questions about it or writing an artical. Does anyone else have a similar type of route they have put up? I guess if I had the energy I could submit my article but I named it because at the bottom of the wall there were rocks that reminded me of Sedona Az.. I was on the wall close to 18 hrs in the rain so through my hallucinatory fatigue the name came to me followed by intense laughter and crying. Great climb. A buddy of mine got the first winter ascent and it's always great to here other people talking about "your route". Almost well. Peace.

"There's a really cool crack in J-Tree called Candy-Colored Tangerine Flake Streamlined Baby. We're not sure how it got the name but it's a really nice 10b." We'll it's the name of a Tom Wolfe novel...and the climb is also known as Illusion Dweller.

A friend of mine put up one south of Grand Junction called "High Over Hantavirus" since there was a dead rat at the bottom of it. If I remember correrctly, there's one over in the South Platte that I climbed called "Slimey Slit". A very wet hand/fist(?) crack. It's been a while since I've been on it, so my memory may fail me.

This week was yet another week at Sam's Throne, AR for me and a friend. We climbed for the first time "Windy Broken Arm" a 5.10 + on the main bluff. We questioned the name until my friend came off about 20 feet up, swung back about 20 feet, and smashed his leg against a tree. Needless to say the route has quite a negative angle to it! His leg took the impact alright, but im guessing if you caught an arm on the tree it wouldn't fair so well.

i wouldn't give it something i had come up with sitting at home. i would want to give it something approptiate for the type of problem it is and how the moves are. you know, if it was reachy or dymanic or crack would really help me find a fitting name. i'm not a big fan of names like Monkey Buttfuk or something like that. i see the humor, but i wouldn't do it. unless i had been drinking, then i would call it something totally idiotic :)

In reply to: i would want to give it something approptiate for the type of problem it is and how the moves are. you know, if it was reachy or dymanic or crack would really help me find a fitting name. I would do the same I think, but I would make sure it still sounded idiotic. If I couldn't link the two together, I'd pick something stupid over something that describes the route. It just seems right that way.

one of my favs i named was "rusty bullet hole"as the climb went past a big round ass looking hole. the last f-a i did i called "sanitarium" for two reasons 1,it a f**king class song and 2.you need putting in one for trying it.

Couchmaster Crusemaster and rockmaster. Well, the couchmaster got named cause I just jump off the couch and fa a 10.a while cleaning 3" thick moss overhead with a wire brush. The other names followed. Boardwalk. Its the costlist piece of property once its developed to land on. Very risky to land on it. Coupled with the fact that the rock was like unnailed boards on a boardwalk. Loose..

A few route name suggestions Pumples Velvet (just sounds good) Toothless Choad (danger of teeth getting bashed out) Epicmaster (route might be future scene of epics) Knee Bar-B-Cue (for a hot, sunny route requiring said move)

In reply to: "Lubrication For a Fisting" at Enchanted Rock, TX Shhhh! They are selling guide books at the park HQ again. Don't know if this route is in the book, but if the church lady finds out she's gonna get her sewing circle to raise a fuss like last time with the Dome Driver. Them old fundies didn't buy that Becky's Crack was not a lewd sexual reference to some girl Becky. Fred Becky no doubt would shake his head in disbelief at hearing that story.

It was just a gym route, so normally I would not bother, but my sister just found out she is having twins. Her maiden name is Mielke, so I called the route "Twin Stars of the Mielke Way". I know it is corney, but it gave me a little thrill.

my boulder problem at coopers for ropers that complain about me sandbagging my boulder problem, amply named "Learning How to Fly" The ropers could just not get over how to climb a 3/4 foot blank section of wall  . Whats the rating you say, V0  To say the least I had to get on the problem and show them and one of my good friend threw sand on my pad  . I take offense to sandbagging really i do :D  PS. Nah I love sandbagging shat since I get it consistently slapped in my face so i gotta give it back to people. Plus always better to error on the lower side of the number in my viewpoint.

My current favorite is in the gym, so I guess that's kind of lame, but... Three-ball teabag. The crux is a dyno to a hold that looks like the end of a femur. Or maybe a three-ball scrotum. Your choice.

I can't remember the exact wording of the name of this route, but theres one at Owens called something like: You have been nothing but trouble since the moment I laid eyes on you you psycho, so get out of my office, get out of my house, get out of my life, get out OUT OUT!!! I know there's a bunch in there that I missed. I'll hafta check the guidebook when I get home.

One of my local (i.e. Australia, Qld) favourites would be: "You climb this and I'll climb something else" which is a hairy, poorly protected arete on an otherwise crack-jammed crag. The name simply says it all.

Nipples that cut Glass - 5.10b at Twin Crags, LT In a slightly unrelated matter, How is Oz, the great 5.10d dihedral in Tuolomne pronounced? Is it Oz, as in the land of Oz? or is it Oz in "i'll take an oz of the dank green"? Keep in mind it's on Drug Dome.

apparently there's a climb in Smith called "harder thatn your Husband" and on that note, a climb went up in Golden BC (a very soggy WI3 ice climb) and the original assentionists caleed it "wetter than your wife" unfortunitaly, some others changed it's name to "green Gully" but to the locals it will always be Wetter

In reply to: Nipples that cut Glass - 5.10b at Twin Crags, LT In a slightly unrelated matter, How is Oz, the great 5.10d dihedral in Tuolomne pronounced? Is it Oz, as in the land of Oz? or is it Oz in "i'll take an oz of the dank green"? Keep in mind it's on Drug Dome. The latter. It can be finished with the "Gram traverse". My favorite wierd route names: "Barb Knarley and the Flailers", up the Barb flake on Spearhead, RMNP, and "Pervertical Sanctuary", on Longs Peak.

In reply to: apparently there's a climb in Smith called "harder thatn your Husband" Harder Than Your Husband at Roadside Crag , Red RIver GOrge, KY 24. Harder Than Your Husband 5.11b ** Walk around the corner from the 5.10 wall to a large ampitheater with some bolted lines. Near the right corner is a roof with a fingercrack. Traverse across the shelf then make a long reach to a good handjam at the lip. Power up to a fingerlock then continue to the anchors. FA: Greg Smith, 1984. Chain Anchor. Bouldery. 40 ft. Stays dry: Light rain

On Carreg Wastad (spelling?) in the Llanberis Pass i Wales, there are a few routes where the first ascensionists have been toying with the name of adjacent routes. Don't know which was the first of: "Crackstone Rib" "Ribstone Crack" "Rackstone Crib" "Cribstone Rack" (Don't actually know if the last route exists, but it should) Other really good route name are, also in Wales, "Dream of White Horses" and "The Bells, the Bells". A route naming tradition that always attracts attention: the sexual, gross or bizarre. Examples could be: "I killed Christ with my big f**king dick" (Stockholm, Sweden) "Bend Over and Recieve" (Somewhere in the US)

Shockley's Ceiling (Gunks route) is a cool-sounding name. Just rolls off the tongue. This might sound redundant, but one of my climbing partners had the best response to a route (also at the Gunks), Fellatio: "Easy to enjoy but hard to do." If I could give a random route a NAME, I'd call it "Idiots Need Not Apply"

Actually The Open Book predates Robins FFA. John Mendenhall and Harry Sutherland aided it in 1947 with wooden wedges made from 2X4s

Back in the 1980's, when Salman Rushdie's book infamous book came out, I looked desperately for a traversing route that I could name "The Satanic Traverses". Alas, I never find the unclimbed line that I could use the name for.

While in Okinawa, my buddies and I were cleaning a trail to a Jungle Wall. We up up a routes Named: Tropical Enema. After I did the FA, a guy fell while on top-rope and rammed a local tropical tree up his %^$SSS and the name was created.

Hardcore Female Thrash at the New. There are TONS of cool names at the red. My first two routes (not only "mine") were Stolen Russian Submarine because the bolts were Russian Titanium and we stole them and Pirates of the Andaman because we were on a pirate ship in the Andaman Sea when we decided to bolt the line. My Banana is Happy to See You went up Right next to Happy Banana and has something to do with a naked Russian girl who was running around on the beach while we were trying to clean the route. The next few will be Bad Tattoo, Fucking Naomi, and MonkeySpider. All for reasons that will probably end up in a tiny guidebook someday that none of you will read. I did a few DWS FA's called Attack of the Crabs, Flight of the Guano (See Kaymore at the New for it's sister climb), and Salty Banana, more names that you probably will never read about someday :).

Sick Experiments at Miskatonic University. Thing vs. Cousin It. Insane Whisperings from a Yuggothian Braincase. Gelatinous Cube's Deadly Solvent. These and others lie in wait at www.MonsterRock.info. (Admittedly a contrived set of names mostly by the land owner to honor H.P. Lovecraft, horror films in general, Tolkien, Dungeons and Dragons, and mythology.)
